I first read matt stone's short essay "why I like math" a little over a year ago and I'm at a loss on what to do with it.
I came across it while doing some research for a post I was entertaining about the dichotomy between south park's public reputation to some degree as an "atheist" show despite having a largely sympathetic, even-handed, and uncharacteristically optimistic tone with respect to its plotlines regarding christianity, faith, and religion -- more than most of its more cynical contemporaries in the adult animation sphere or sitcoms more broadly.
And there's just something about Matt's essay that clicked with me in such a profound way. Trey has a lot of interesting things to say regarding his own personal feelings on God and faith and how that influences the show, but one thing I've noticed a lot of the people I most admire creatively have in common is analogizing the creative process to math, or a fixation with numbers and their relation to each other, the mathematical brain. My own math skills are pretty average -- decent, but certainly nothing to write home about, but I'm also very fixated on the physicality in math and searching for that pattern recognition, very fixated on numbers, how I recognize it in my writing or art on a conscious level when you reach that flow state, and him describing his mathematical proficiency as something deeply spiritual made me have my own Magic Eye moment of you don't, you don't, and then you *do*.
And I think so much of life is about those moments of clarity, and reading this made me have one of them. You don't get them often but the brief euphoria of when you do is... it just is.
I'm an atheist but I have a lot of appreciation for Matt's specific flavor of atheism that still recognizes the social utility, historical significance, and the personal fulfillment that religion provides, and in what ways you experience that same sense of spiritual enlightenment when you operate outside the confines of organized religion.
Iβve been following you since I was 13 and now Iβm on college and you are getting married. So insane
i hope any impression i may have left on you as a thirteen year old and the subsequent psychological damage has been kept to a minimum. and that college is going well!
do you have any thoughts on the hollycomb m-preg fic? as weird as it is on a base level, I feel like there are some aspects of the characterization that you specifically would enjoy so Iβm kind of curious to know if youβve read it lol
if you're talking specifically about the groundbreaking work of fiction that is herbert garrison's night school for unwed fathers, then yes, i have read it lol
mpreg has never quite been my niche but i cannot deny that version of stan and kyle are utterly delightful. the entire exchange between sheila, stan, and kyle in her car is unbearably funny, and stan and kyle themselves are equal parts insufferable yet so endearing -- exactly as they should be.
i love a lot of holly's work. i remember being 19 at my shitty job and taking my smoke break outside while i caught up on a few paragraphs of her fic never change, which might be my favorite of all. she strikes such a good balance between stan's obedience and his passive desperation, and kyle's unwitting standoffish-ness that hinders his ability to express himself.
there also will simply never be a better title for a work of fanfiction than herbert garrison's night school for unwed fathers.
hey i just wanted to say i really really loved your fic βa bowl full of oyster crackersβ and itβs probably my favorite fic like, ever, but it was written so well and everything about it was just super endearing and lovely, especially chapter 11. chapter 11 changed my life i think
i'm so glad you enjoy it. i know i wrote it but of everything i've written it's the most special to me and it always boosts my mood when people tell me here or on ao3 that it's meant something to them, really gives me the kick to revisit all my drafts and put something out there
oh and sorry to everyone who has been waiting for the final chapter for like, almost a full year after i intended to publish it. it's so near to complete and i lost my laptop charger months ago and am too stubborn to simply buy a new one when I KNOW it's somewhere in my apartment

companion post to this, thinking of the Disneyesque harmonies and general vibe at the opening of Mountain Town and thought itβd be funny and cute to embrace it
the year is 2002. local losers stan and kyle skip their freshman year fall dance to stay inside and play kingdom hearts. kyle is in charge of the brady games guide while stan gets his ass kicked by riku 2 for the fourteenth time.
back in 2017 i was so obsessed with this frame of craig from some russian fanmade episode i printed him out and kept him on my desk until he fell and got sucked into a vacuum
Um so. I'm playing kingdom hearts 2 for the first time. And why have I only just realized that Moses was a tron joke this entire time. Uhhhh.

trey parker I know you read my blog please come to my wedding it's next month we're having chicken. Thank you for your attention to this matter.
crazy how young jon hamm is actually stan marsh
it's because i've been listening to way too much leonard cohen and tim buckley the last week but i had to sketch something of 60s stankyle or i was going to start frothing at the mouth.
kyle likes stan's unassuming nature and creative sincerity, endeared by his blue collar naivetΓ© and endless servility; stan likes that kyle, despite his wealth and abrasive personality (and his love of cocaine), is a deeply compassionate and intelligent person that wears his heart on his sleeve. craig hates stan for being impressed by a pretentious pissant bourgeois pretty boy and takes it out on his typewriter.
when kyle's coming down and depressed and holed up away from the world stan draws him a bath and reads kyle's favorite book to him until the water's cold and he's all pruny.
wendy is an over-privileged rich kid with a heart that's closer to bronze than gold. calls herself a patron of the arts but the extent of her patronage is smoking marijuana cigarettes with kyle in his room at the hotel chelsea while they watch the tonight show with johnny carson, discuss the works of baudelaire and mallarme, and bitch about their families. militant feminist that attends barnard and privately seethes about having to attend a women's college because she can't go to columbia.
craig doesn't care for french poetry or german philosophy because he is fundamentally opposed to the pretentious european sensibilities of the pretentious dregs that litter new york's art world, but it's the place to be. he's a closeted american patriot with a deep affinity for southern gothic literature. both tormented and deeply comforted by his homosexuality. his only hope is that someone, eventually, will realize his quiet but tangible talent and take a chance on him so he doesn't have to take a chance on himself. he's rude, lonely, over-confident, desperate, and a touch misogynistic -- possessing all the trappings of the next great american playwright.
6. . . 6-7
the day after this episode aired I was at work and I was helping out my buddy managing the checkouts and asked, with a customer in tow, if he wanted me on register six or seven and this woman in her thirties did the hand thing and went "ooooooooh six sevennn!" and the feeling it gave me was identical to being told I lost the game in sixth grade
people talk oh who's the better police figure in south park is it barbrady or is it yates yadda yadda yadda. Personally if you put me in a room with officer barbrady and sergeant yates and gave me an unloaded gun I would break out of the room, find two bullets, and shoot barbrady twice.
