        the  cluttered  counter  was  a  barrier  between  them.  the  open  space  between  the  kitchen  and  the  living  room  grew  stiff  and  quiet  with  night  having  swallowed  most  of  the  detail.   each  light  here  was  warm,   but  what  was  between  them  was  cold.   she  looked  at  him,   hearing  his  words  and  felt  very  little.   guilt  did  not  consume  her  like  it  had  when  they  first  got  involved.   destruction  and  outrage  quieted  to  indifference  and  the  closing  of  doors.    they  don’t  entertain  each  other  with  scorn  no  longer  and  as  she  begun  blooming  more  fully  from  her  grief,  she  closed  those  doors  more  often   —-   leaving  him  in  darkness.   

       she  couldn’t  save  everyone,   but  these  days  she  worked  harder  on  saving  herself.          ❛   are  you  asking  me  if  i  think  you’re  a  bad  person ??  ❜     a  pinch  of  irritation  left  her  voice  and  she  swallowed  it  back  down  her  throat.    she  wouldn’t  feel  guilty  for  him.   she’d  done  it  for  so  many  people,   packed  it  in  boxes  and  left  them  in  her  room.   guilt  in  lockets  around  her  neck,   and  buried  it  in  her  yard.      ❛   don’t  put  your  guilt  on  me.    i  already  have  enough  of  my  own  to  hold  on  to.  ❜
