Hair tent houses are one of the most iconic symbols of traditional desert living in the Middle East. What Are Hair Tent Houses?

Hair tent houses are traditional shelters made from woven animal hair, usually goat or camel hair. These tents are often referred to as “Bait Al Sha’ar” (بيت الشعر), which literally means “house of hair” in Arabic. They are designed to withstand harsh desert conditions while maintaining comfort inside.

The structure includes a strong fabric roof and side walls, all made from tightly woven hair fibers. These fibers expand when exposed to moisture, making the tent naturally water-resistant, and contract in dry heat, allowing ventilation.
