"By 0550, Texas began opening fire with its 14” and 5” guns on the German defenses on and around Pointe du Hoc. Once completed, Texas would provide fire support as it was requested by the troops landing on the beaches and targets of opportunity spotted by aircraft. By 1207, Texas had learned of the difficulties that troops trying to break through the D-1 exit at Vierville-sur-mer. To better assist those troops Texas closed to less than 3000 yards of the beach and began to fire with both 14” and 5” guns on the German positions defending the exit."
She fired 421 rounds from her main battery of 14 inch guns on this day.
Texas continued to provide support throughout the day until darkening the ship at 2230 to ensure the ship was harder to spot. While planes would fly by during the night, Texas was not attacked, and the crew prepared itself to continue providing fire support the next day."
Note: during the invasion, all of the battleship’s Kingfishers and the their catapults were removed in England prior to sailing to Normandy. Their pilots were given Spitfires to conduct spotting for their battleships.
