one thing about learning another language is that even languages very similar to your own will quickly reveal themselves to be fundamentally different in the way they attach meaning to words. a group of different ideas with the same label in english may all have different names in german and a verb that covers two similar actions in spanish may be two distinct verbs in english. language shapes perspective to such an extent that we don't even realise its influence until we interrogate it. how does this not keep you up at night
