The thing you're saying.

That that thing is worth saying.

That is, speech/writing has a cost to it, in the form of energy and time expended doing it, in the energy and time taken by others to listen to/read it, and the thing you are communicating is implied to be sufficiently valuable to worth that trade-off.

E.g. if you meet a woman and she says, "Hi, I'm Becky, I was born on a Thursday," it would be an odd experience because even if 1 applies, 2 clearly doesn't (unless you are running some kind of day-of-birth study or something ig). There is a hidden meaning of, "you should be aware of the weekday of my birth because it is important," that seems to make no sense.

And yet people will often defend something they have said on the basis of it being strictly true, which is unsatisfactory because it only justifies half of what was communicated by the act of saying it.

If Becky comes along to a queer event and says "Hi, I'm Becky, I'm AFAB," you have to understand that that is not just a neutral statement of fact, it also communicates something like this: "I am aware that if I looked and sounded the same but my sex assignment was different I would be treated differently. I am informing you of my sex assignment right now so that you treat me appropriately hereafter."

And that is just straight-up transmisogyny, both in displaying uncritical acceptance of how prevalent transmisogyny is in queer groups, and in demanding exemption from it. It sounds absurd on the face of it that a cis woman describing herself using entirely true statements can be doing transmisogyny, even in the absence of any transfeminine person or any mention of transfeminity at all. But it's true all the same.

"Oh so you hate gay men? Youre gonna be homophobic? You want gay men to die? Why are you being so infantilizing? Gay men can have stories too! I just dont find women interesting! How about you make the content you wanna see? Its hard to write about women because there are never any well written female characters! Why are you forcing me to write wlw? People just write about the things theyre attracted to and there are so many more straight women than lesbians! Why would i write about stuff that doesnt make me horny? Men dont have anything you need to let us have gay ships at least! We're so overlooked!"

Welcome to year four of the AO3 Femslash Top 100 Tournament. For anyone new here, this is a tournament putting together almost all of the pairings who appear on this year's Femslash Top 100 list, which is a list published by @centrumlumina of the sapphic pairings with the most fanworks on Archive of Our Own.

The first round will begin on the 10th of August 12pm ACST and will be up for one week.

Some general info:

For the first time since starting this, I am officially kicking some ships out of the tournament: all six Harry Potter ships, for hopefully obvious reasons, as well as Ava/Beatrice from Warrior Nun, who have been our winners for the past two years in a row. To keep the numbers even, I have put the 101st ship, Allison/Lydia from Teen Wolf, back into the bracket.

I'm just one person doing this, and while I'll try to keep on top of asks, propoganda, harrassment, etc., I'm obviously not able to be here 24/7, apologies in advance for this — if you think I've missed anything just send me an ask about it :)

Propoganda is encouraged, but any harassment or attacks on real people will result in me blocking you. I don't care if you meant it as a joke. I'll do my best to monitor replies and reblogs for shitty behaviour, but ultimately I am just one person, so please let me know if you see any harassment, etc. that I seem to have missed.

If you want a specific image to be used for a ship, please send it to me! Any image is fine as long as it's in relatively high quality and can be cropped into a square. Fanart and other fan creations are also accepted as long as they're being used with the permission of the artist.

And finally, as always, this is just a silly poll for fun. Nothing is so serious that you need to send death threats or starting harassing people, no matter how disgusting you think their ship is or how much they're being mean to your blorbos.
