𝟎𝟎𝟏. born the youngest in washington d.c. to very career driven people who had children before they decided it was time to settle down . the suns were by no means rich , but they were comfortable . her father was an archaeology professor and her mother ? a financial analyst . unfortunately , being the youngest meant that she wasn’t doted on a lot by her parents . with two older siblings , she suddenly became their responsibility . they were the ones babysitting while their parents were at work . and when they couldn’t , hayden was often in the care of her grandparents .
𝟎𝟎𝟐. she’s only eight when her family discovers her penchant for archery . she’s gifted . a prodigy , one of her coaches said . and it was only a matter of time since her older siblings each had something they were gifted in . since that discovery , her focus starts to heavily shift to archery . not that she minds it , it’s fun . she continues training and by nine , she starts competing in archery tournaments . she’s ten when she makes it to the junior olympics and continues making it until she’s scouted .
𝟎𝟎𝟑. while most of her formative years were spent training , hayden wouldn’t say she’s socially stunted . she still went to school . she’s social , outgoing and charismatic . kind of seen as a jock given how she presents herself . people liked her and knew of her . although , not many people knew of her archery talent . she’s in her final year of high school when she finds out she qualifies for the olympics . hayden is now on the road to the olympics .
𝟎𝟎𝟒. she medals at the 2016 olympics and she couldn’t be more proud of herself . hayden is thrust back into reality when she gets back from rio . at this point , she’s only in her second year of college when she realizes that she wants to focus more on school . she never really wanted to be a professional athlete .
even without the athletic scholarship to georgetown , she’s still enrolled since her father is a tenured professor . the following three years are spent focusing on school and finding out what she wants to do with her life . after adding an art history minor , hayden realizes that she wants to be an art conservator . in the end , she graduates from college with a degree in chemistry with an art history minor .
after graduation , she dives straight into grad school . she chooses to complete her grad program in roswell because she’s got family there . well kinda , they’re no longer in roswell but they still have property so hayden and her cousin struck up a lease with another family member and moved in together . it’s an added bonus for hayden to get away from all the limelight .

“ I SERIOUSLY HOPE NOT , ” hayden shakes her head . “ but you do have a point . i can at least say i’m busy if anyone wants to try and thrust any work on me . ” hayden leads the two of them into the temperature-controlled room . “ i’ll say that it’s not much , but i think it’s still something , ” she admits . while she personally would never find herself purchasing a first-edition , the idea of it does sound appealing . “ i think the coolest thing here is that someone actually just gave us a partially complete set of oz first editions . ”
“HAVE YOU STARTED DECORATING FOR CHRISTMAS?” she wonders, giving her a friend a bright smile. “Or do you only like decorating early on for Halloween?” She recalls the conversation they had a while back. “I started getting a few things. I’m excited.”
“ I HAVE THIS WEIRD thing about starting to decorate for christmas when it hits december , ” hayden admits to her friend . sometimes you just need a break , y’know ? “ so i have the tree setup but it’s not decorated . i figured i could have a couple friends over and we could decorate it together . so yes , this is an invitation for you to join me if you want ! ”
‘ that sounds way more within my budget - ’ they admit , almost sheepishly as they do so . ‘ i think i’d be yelled at by my sister if i even considered getting one of these first editions . even she doesn’t like reading like that ! ’ the two sisters were raised to enjoy the antiques of life , sure , but they were also pretty damn level headed as well . ‘ oh i bet , i heard it takes years of training . ’
“ IT’S ALL GOOD . i can’t even afford most of the books in this section , ” hayden comments with a light shrug . “ i like to believe that rich people started collecting first-editions because they got bored and didn’t want to be like everyone else . ” even her parents would yell at her if she spent over $1000 on an old book . vintage weapons however ? that was another thing . “ it’s definitely not my thing . i lean more towards art conservation . ”
SHE’S NOT ONE TO INTERFERE, but she can hear the couple arguing and it’s ruining her night. Maybe if they talked things out in a normal tone and actually listened to each other, they wouldn’t have this fight. “I’m either going to need a stronger drink, or maybe just tell the couple to get a room. They’re totally ruining my vibe, bro.”

“ AWESOME ! ” she beams . hayden’s initial plans involved going back to d.c. but that was a bust when she found out her parents are traveling to china for the holidays . “ true , but are ugly christmas sweaters even ugly anymore ? ” she asks , lips twisting up in thought . “ i’ll probably make it optional , ” she shrugs . “ and i’m probably gonna make it a potluck because there’s no way my cousin and i can make that much food all in one go . but we’ve got drinks covered ! ”
he was lucky he had friends who cared about him enough to keep a secret party hidden from him. he’d considered hayden a good friend for as long as he can remember, and he was hoping he felt the same about her. the birthday breakfast and present seemed to be a pretty good indication. “YOU SPOIL ME,” he teases. even though their conversations ended up with hayden pretending to be irritated with him ( or at least, he was hoping it was pretend ), the two were actually quite the pair. “and when have you known me to be anything but? BESIDES, a holster will totally make me look sexy.”
IT STILL AMAZES HER that she’s only been here for two years and already , she’s met people who she would consider her closest friends . and despite how she pretends to be irritated with him , she considers owen to be a good friend . “ i think if i said no i would just not hear the end of it , ” she teases back . “ we’re doing tequila shots . ” she announces , leaving no room for him to argue . “ i don’t think a holster will make you look sexy , ” hayden retorts , taking the two shot glasses she’s served and handing on to owen . “ holsters on women ? ” mimics the motion of a chef’s kiss . “ here’s to shot number seven ! ”
“ none of these are speaking to me , “ he sighed , examining the scattered menus at the foodcourt in an attempt to find something to satisfy him until dinnertime . going out to eat with fletcher was a chore in itself – nothing would ever come close to his mother’s cooking , and so he struggled to find the energy to even try . “ any other suggestions before i literally starve to death ?? “
“ REALLY , NOTHING ? ” hayden asks , almost in disbelief . “ i think i’m gonna go for a poke bowl , ” she announces . it wasn’t exactly a meal since those never tend to keep her full . “ so i’m suggesting poke but you can totally turn it down . or a smoothie bowl if you’re just looking for a really light snack . ”
the music is incredibly loud and at this point, owen isn’t entirely sure what time it is. he doesn’t even realize hayden is behind him until he feels her hand against his arm. he’s quick to grab her other hand as he turns, hoping to help steady her. “I’M SO GLAD YOU COULD MAKE IT!” he’s borderline yelling, trying to speak over the loud music of the club. “be honest, how long did you know about the party?” he was genuinely surprised alex and ali were able to keep him off their tracks for this long. “at this rate? i’ve probably had…” he pauses, counting fingers on his free hand. “five? no, SIX. but if you wanna buy me a birthday shot, we could definitely make it seven.” he reaches into his back pocket and pulls out the nicely covered knife that hayden was kind enough to get him for his birthday. “oh trust me, i won’t. i’m already planning out the holster i’m going to buy so i can wear it every time we hang out.”
“ IF I’M BEING HONEST ? a while now , ” hayden turns to shoot owen a cheeky grin . the easy part was keeping it a secret from him . the challenge came in the form of choosing a gift that he’d like . she lets out a drunk giggle when he starts counting fingers . “ well i technically already promised you a birthday breakfast for tomorrow ... ” girl playfully trails off . “ but i guess i can also buy you a birthday shot as well . ” she tugs him along and makes a b-line for the bar as soon as she spots an opening . “ a holster ? dude , that’s so extra . i don’t even wear a holster for my knife most of the time . ” unless she was wearing something without pockets then that’s another story !
Camila breathes a sigh of relief and returns the smile. “Well, maybe it’s solely meant as a metaphor for judging people and not meant to be taken so literally,” she softly laughs. “I’m more inclined to read thrillers or mysteries, and you can’t go wrong with non-fiction true crime. Maybe something in the vein of Agatha Christie? And I make an effort to avoid James Patterson as much as possible.”
“ THAT’S WHAT I LIKE TO BELIEVE . but who’s to say ? ” she shrugs . “ similar to agatha christie and avoiding james patterson ... ” she repeats , pulling out a couple books . “ the hunting party gives me murder on the orient express vibes , ” she hands the book over to cami . “ a gentleman’s murder is also a favorite of mine , ” she comments , pulling it from the shelf . “ and maybe the 7 1/2 deaths of evelyn hardcastle ? ” she’s not entirely sure if that’s what she’s looking for but there will be no hard feelings if she doesn’t take any of her suggestions .

❛ YOU ARE BEING SUCH A BABY ❜ is a phrase owen had grown up all too used to hearing from his siblings. in his defense, he was the baby of the family, so he felt he was allowed to act that way. however, that mindset didn’t transfer so well into his friendships. of the two, though, owen was definitely the weaker one, which he felt gave him the right to act baby-ish with hayden. if he was some other third party and had to pick one of them to protect himself, he would pick hayden a million times before he chooses himself. “you know, it’s kind of HOT when you threaten my life like that,” he tells her. before he can think of potential consequences, she’s mentioned his roommate and his mind has already moved on. “oh yeah, he definitely does. the dude’s, like, a costume master. i don’t know how he does it. honestly, if i hadn’t gotten my costume figured out so early, i definitely would be hitting him up with some last minute ideas. i’ll be roswell’s hottest firefighter, feel free to swoon if you need to.”
IT GOES WITHOUT SAYING that she’s protective of him . she’s protective of all her friends and would likely jump to their defense if needed . although , owen doesn’t need the ego boost so hayden will continue to let it remain unsaid . “ you saying i’m hot for threatening your life might just be the start of my villain arc . ” she rolls her eyes and turns to face him . “ if i decide to go to comic con this year at least i know i can count on the costume shop , ” she muses . “ although , i’m gonna pass on the swooning . however , i will make no promises about the laughing . ”
“ AH, NO WONDER IT SMELLS LIKE DUST. i thought you just weren’t a very good employee, ” he teases, flashing hayden a smile as they lead him out of the secret. probably for the best, since it’s likely those books cost more than ali’s life. “ broke grad school budget works for me. maybe even less—i don’t have money for student loans, ” he tells her, stuffing his hands in his pocket. face perks up at her suggestion. “ hell yeah, you know me so well. ”
“ I AM AN EXCELLENT EMPLOYEE i’ll have you know , ” hayden playfully rolls her eyes . “ employee of the month and all that shit . ” that’s if the store even had that . “ oh i was grinding to get in on scholarships and grants . i am not trying to be in debt for like ... EVER . ” especially when she has plans to pursue her doctorate ! she quickly checks the time before making her way over to the computer on the front counter to clock out . “ well i’m officially off the clock so lead the way ! ”
there was always a title that ender had her head buried in . some of it was to brush up on facts and figures and other times it was for pleasure ; this time it was the latter , and she raised a copy of the big sleep for hayden to admire . “ i’m keeping my mucky paws off the special collections , but there’s something about the smell in this part of the store that’s invigorating . i’m sure you know what i mean . it helps all the information fill each wrinkle in my brain even better than before . i’d love a private tour of the rare books , though , if you aren’t busy . “
SHE’LL READILY ADMIT THAT the rare books section is her favorite . and not because she can spend her time in at temperature controlled section of the shop . “ you’ll be fine if you wear gloves , ” hayden chuckles . “ the cover isn’t the most important part , it’s about keeping the pages from getting all gross and mildewy . ” hayden turns to gage how busy the store is before turning back to face ender . “ yeah i’m down to give a private tour of the books . it looks empty enough that no one will come looking for me . ”
❛ it’s fine, ❜ they insist well into their theatrics, not necessarily letting up on them when avi flicks their hair back & releases an over exaggerated huff. ❛ i just need to process this. and by process, i mean, i’m buying that book … yeah. yeah, i’m buying that book for a baby. okay? a baby that’s not even born yet, mind you, so you bet your ass they’re gonna be thanking me in five years. ❜ a five year old’s not going to be reading a first edition of gone with the wind, avi. then again, why would an adult want to read that either? ❛ so — assist me, hm? how much could it even be? five dollars? — it doesn’t matter. i got paid two days ago. ❜ and they’re soon going to regret using said paycheck on this book they’re mainly buying out of spite.
