You’re never going to guess what day of the week it is

I’ve been thinking about the songs in Total Drama World Tour, and there’s something interesting that I noticed about them. I’m not sure if it was intentional or not, but if it was, it’s pretty clever. You see, when writing songs for a musical, you want them to be the moments of highest emotional intensity. There’s a quote that’s goes something like ‘when the emotions become too strong for words, that’s when the song starts.’ But the problem that TDWT should have faced is that all of the music is diegetic which means that the songs are actually being sung in universe by (relatively) normal people, as opposed to non-diegetic (which would be like background music) and then musical numbers usually blur that line a little, because it’s debatable whether the characters are actually singing or if it’s just supposed to be a creative decision of sorts. That is to say, it’s easier for characters to break into song at moments of high emotional intensity in a world where that just … happens. But in TDWT the characters are literally being asked to sing on command at random moments. Which would be a problem (because then they would be singing even when their emotions aren’t high enough) but the writers didn’t let that happen. Every time they’re asked to sing they’re in the right mindset for where a song show naturally go. Which also makes a lot of sense, because Chris, in character, would ask them to break into song at the least convenient times. Which would of course be the times when their emotions are highest (usually said emotion being annoyance or anger.) There are a few exceptions / ones that are a bit of a stretch, like Blainerific and Who You Gunna Root For, but it’s not enough to ruin things, and they still work pretty well. Anyway, that’s all I wanted to say. It’s nothing too ground breaking, just a smart writing decision (and another reason why World Tour is one of my favorite seasons)
