As a family, we've erected a @beaverlogcabinsirl shed between rain showers in Ireland. Fair play to Ruth and Mia (in the video) who were as skilled as a professional roofing crew. I THINK MY CAMERA ROLL can tell stories better than I can remember so every week I watch Magisto automatically select a bunch of content from my phone as the app produces a short video clip. I doubt viewers of this 50 second clip have any idea what I was doing in every frame but nonetheless, each of these weekly clips gives me a sense of accomplishment when they play back. I've worked in third level Irish education for more than 20 years. Through those decades, the level of State funding for the sector has declined while the number of students has increased. Now COVID-19 is skewering the prospect of international students on campus. Those students provided highly profitable revenue streams and much desired diversity on campus. Budget shortfalls mean government support for research is much diminished. We have a Motorola Hubble camera that gives us sound and motion alerts. The cacophony of various bird calls tells us whether we are hosting a social feeding session. On this sunny Saturday, we hosted two felines, four rooks, two starlings, and one blackbird. Their sounds come through clearer than the webcam video. Self-isolation gives us deep thinking moments. Mia (12) and I are sharing thoughts about what might happen to the family and our extended family on two continents. You never forget your first quarantine. I remember mine--imposed after I hauled radioactive soil on a trans-Pacific cargo flight. COVID-19 seems more like a cluster of inconveniences wrapped inside what will be a global recession. In Mia's lifetime, the economy sunk painfully after the housing market soured. When that happened, Ireland's unemployed more than doubled, the stock market lost half of its value, and the country needed a bailout that we still haven't repaid. Across the globe, I expect we will see much of the same sort of an economic shock but with millions of deaths. Three pieces of mobe mourning travel gear--each costing me 40 euro--but only one of them has lasted longer than expected. The blue Converse bag is handy and let's me carry my journals, MiFi, cables, pens, keys, wireless mic, and bluetooth earbuds. I have to remember to zip its outer pocket completely or I lose things. The red Moleskine zipper snapped after two years carrying a little journal and a Sony Xperia Z5 phone. The brown bag in the background has worn well. It protects my ATR2100USB mic, iRig, cables, and adapters. It was made in Italy from real leather and looks proud today. Stephen Howell started our 12 hour long field trip to Dublin by explaining to 20 game art design and creative media students why "you have to know how to code". It was easy to spot coders walking the halls of Microsoft Europe outside the innovation space where students saw innovative uses of Microsoft Cognitive Services inside mixed reality gaming environments. Although nearly all of the students on this field trip started four years ago on a BSc in Game Art and Design, they saw how their skills could be used in smart manufacturing, VR movie sets, and photogrammery. I've asked for feedback from those attending both the Microsoft briefings and the 3D Camp that followed. Based on the first verbal comments, I know there are gaps in terms of technical language used by some researchers and I also realise the importance of giving a pre-brief the week before the field trip. That did not happen for us today because my group did not meet as scheduled during a day-long strike by lecturers. I plan to aggregate feedback from my talented group of creatives and I will cross-post a summary on ClonmelDigital.com with a teaser appropriately tagged on Instagram.
