Daichi and Sugawara's apartment smelled like sugarâwarm yet sweet enough to make the rainy evening more gentle. The kitchen lights hummed and glowed gold across countertops, reflecting off bowls filled with crepe batter and a ridiculous amount of strawberries Daichi insisted on buying during their last grocery visit.Â
Outside, the rain continued to patter softly against the window. While inside, the couple spent the evening baking crepes together.
âDaichi, tell me why we needed this many?â Sugawara asked, rinsing the strawberries with precise ease. Daichi looked up from the pan and crossed his arms âBecause,â he said with a small shrug âyou mentioned liking strawberries once KĹshi, I remembered.â âI said I âlikedâ strawberries, not that I wanted to open a creperie, Officer Sawamura.â Sugawara teased.
âPlus,â Daichi added after a beat âthey were on sale.â
The pan sizzled softly as the crepe slowly began to set, its edges lifting and turning into a golden brown color. Then, a sweet aroma fills the kitchen âSmells good, huh?â Daichi asked. Sugawara glanced over his shoulder and smiled âMm⌠it smells amazing!â
Something warm settled in Daichiâs chest when Sugawara smiled.Â
His gaze lingered on Sugawaraâs soft features. He noticed the flour dusted on the right side of his cheek; how his hands were still damp after washing the strawberries.
Daichi didnât realize he was staring for too long until Sugawara tilted his head slightly.
âWhat?â Sugawara asked, still smiling. âAh- ehem. Youâve got some flour on your face.â Daichi said too quickly âHere, hold still and let me get it for you.â Slowly, he brought up his fingers and brushed away the flour on Sugawaraâs cheek. âThere.â
For a moment, only the soft hiss of batter in the pan filled the kitchen air. Sugawara didnât move right away and neither did Daichi. It wasnât because he didnât hear him clearly, no, it was because his hand was still hovering near the right side of his cheek.
âOh?â Sugawara finally said, voice lighter than before âI didnât notice, thank you.â Daichi cleared his throat and pulled his hand back. âYouâre welcome.â A pause. âThough, we shouldnât get too distracted Daichi, we might burn the crepe!â Daichi blinked once âRight-!â He turned around just in time, slid the spatula underneath and flipped the crepe with ease.
Sugawara laughed quietly beside him, âClose call.â âYeah, yeah.â Daichi muttered, though the tips of his ears had a faint pink tint now.
The next few minutes passed by quickly, Sugawara continued to slice strawberries into neat pieces while Daichi worked on the batter. âHey, Daichi?â âHm?â âYou know, buying all these strawberries wasnât such a bad idea.â Daichi glanced over âTold you so.â Â
âDonât get too smug now.â Sugawara said as he held a strawberry between his fingers. âWe still have plenty left.â Sugawara added âThen,â Daichi replied âweâll just eat them tomorrow and the day after that.â Sugawara shook his head fondly âHah, unbelievable.âÂ
And as Daichi started preparing another crepe while Sugawara started whipping up some whipped cream beside him, the apartment felt even warmer than it had at the start of the evening.
