I think a major contributor to the OPLA's success is just how fucking casual it is with portraying the weirder aspects of the source material.

A lesser adaptation would try to oversell the giant wax cakes and gunslinging sea otters as something to mock and ridicule, but the OPLA never does this.

It's treated as genuine worldbuilding rather than a punchline, and that goes a long way in making it feel immersive.

This is why I love Ichi the Witch.

Most modern shonens like jjk and chainsaw man seem to revel in the darkness and despair and are hellbent on making its characters feel miserable. But Ichi goes against the tide and insists on a world more akin to one piece where love and optimism are the key to winning your battles.

It's a very old school shonen philosophy and I'm glad this series is embracing it.
