do you ever look back at photos from when you were a baby? when everybody loved you and thought you'd do something awesome in life, only for you to grow up into a sad, depressed, self-sabotaging twenty-something? i can see in their eyes that they wanted something more out of me. i'm constantly being met with disappointment. i've deleted every trace of myself from social media. my friends aren't my friends anymore—they still talk about me, but not in a way that is favorable. they won't reach out and say anything to my face. they never do.

my family will continue to go on vacations without me. can you dogsit for me? can you feed my cats while we hang out without you? i'm sorry we picked the week that you said you absolutely had to work—we will do it again!

and i'll say that, yes, i can. maybe if i do something nice, they'll see me as human enough to be treated as an equal. if i kiss ass and people please, i'll be five again. auburn hair, sunkissed freckles on my cheeks, stomach full from dinner. i'm 5'10 now. i cut my hair short, dyed it black, and killed whoever i was born to be. my freckles don't even appear anymore, even when my fair skin turns tan.

you know things are getting bad when pieces of yourself decide to abandon you as well.
