My amazing, incredibly independent grandmother passed two nights ago. I came to Japan to take care of her and my grandpa and it has been extremely rough at times but I know with absolute certainty that my presence was needed and helped the situation as much as possible. Her death was of terrible circumstances but she was an unbelievably strong person and she passed surrounded by loving family. We did the best we could to make sure she was able to have her last days be as comfortable and full of support as possible. She suffered from extremely rare symptoms of dementia that caused her torment, and I am glad that she is out of her suffering and that she didn’t have to enter into strangers care or spend any time away from her loving husband. I am endlessly thankful to everyone who has been of support during this time. This photo is of her witnessing her daughter’s, my mother’s, first steps. She was a person of unparalleled fortitude, independence and spirit. She was part of an strong samurai family and exemplified values of a lineage that I am honored to carry on. I will remember her laugh, her warmth and every moment I spent with her, no matter how difficult it was at times. おき子様、永遠に大好きだよ。
