âOnee-chan!â The young heir-to-beâs voice rang down the hallway as he called out to his sister. He had meant it to be a whisper, but something about this particular hall magnified every sound, from his voice, to her footsteps, to the pounding of his own heartbeat. He was more than a little bit excited to show her his discovery, but he was also nervous; he hadnât taken more than a few steps into the new passage he had found  before running off to find his twin. What if it were dangerous, or a dead end? Even worse, what if it didnât lead anywhere at all, and he had dragged her across the estate for no reason? She was far more patient with him than she would be with anyone else, but that didnât mean she wouldnât be annoyed that he had interrupted her silent reading.Â
âThe passage is right here, behind the portrait! I bumped it while I was returning one of the books, and it kept sliding on itâs own until there was an opening.â He explained first, then once she was near enough he pushed it out of the way to reveal a pitch black hallway with no apparent end. âSo...do you want to check it out? If you want to wait...I can go in by myself...I think...âÂ
Holding onto his arm tightly as the two of them set out into the streets, she was admittedly a bit overwhelmed at first by how many people were there and how they didnât seem to notice or recognize them in the leastâperhaps it was due to them almost always being driven to work, but walking almost seemed to be a dangerous activity. Of course, the streets of Tokyo werenât much different, so she really had no reason to be worriedâŚbut at least there people knew who they were with a single glance and knew not to bump into them or act rudely, whereas the people of Paris seemed to move along with the wind, not caring much as to where their feet would take them. What was it like, living a life so full of freedom? She couldnât possibly imagine it in the least, and yet they were experiencing it in that very moment. As exhilarating as it was, it frightened her; after being raised on schedules and concrete plans, living in the moment was a completely foreign concept. Perhaps she would grow to enjoy it with timeâŚ
Pondering his question for a moment, she thought long and hard before she answered, âWhile I like most of Ingresâs works, I always enjoy seeing Diana of Versailles and the Venus de Milo. To see such powerful women of myth and legend immortalized foreverâŚitâs simply incredible that those sculptures have managed to last that long, and that the Greeks were able to leave a permanent mark on the world.â She had to wonder if the two of them would ever be able to reach that caliber of recognition, to live on in the hearts of man and the text of booksâŚbut as much as she wanted to become a part of history, she knew that today wasnât the day to start planning world dominationâthat could come later, over a delicious, traditional French dinner. Brushing her thoughts away with a smile, she asked, âWhat about you? What would you say are your favorites?â
âWell, I must agree with the ones youâve chosen, as your taste is impeccable. As for myself....â Perhaps he shouldnât have asked such a difficult question of his twin, knowing she would turn it back on him; he was forced to stall in silence for a moment, taking another deep breath of the spring air. âWell, Iâve always been partial to The Oath of the Horatii, because of the depth of emotion portrayed, as well as the masterful technique. However, I must admit that I do enjoy the Mona Lisa, although it is the most commonly known, and La Liberte guidant le peuple is a favorite of mine as well. I can easily admit that Iâm no artist myself, but I feel a bit more centered in the presence of such talented works.â He slowed naturally as they approached the mill of people on the museum grounds, and guided them along its outer edge. For a weekday afternoon, it was fairly busy, but even that wasnât half as much as it would have been during peak tourist seasons.Â
âSince your statues are closest to each other, perhaps we should begin there, then move into the French artistsâ section?â As he made the proposal, he handed their lifetime pass to the attendant at the counter. He barely glanced at her, but he could almost feel her eyes widening at the sight of the gold plated identification card. âWelcome back, Monsieur et Mademoiselle. Enjoy your visit,â she squeaked, and handed him back the card. A slight smirk slipped onto his face as he led his sister deeper into the museum, already passing several famous works. âThatâs always interesting; they seem so shocked.â
RUNNING from one of the many local high schools to hopeâs peak academy in the time she had was definitively something kanon knew should be in a record book. of course, were anyone to ask her to do it again â without her original motivation to back her up â a guaranteed failure was to be expected. whenever it came to her older cousin, it was as if someone was turning on a switch in her mind, making her bloom from a normal, slightly ditzy good to someone with enormous potential and delivered promises of growth with every action.
still, if running across the city just to be on time to meet her cousin was a feat, finding him in the MIST of all those students was one of grandeur. it was almost strange how many different colors she could count in this sea of people, but in a way, it was also quite comforting. knowing the world belonged to unique people, who were proud to be who they were and of their accomplishment, was something she knew was truly inspiring to many, perhaps even planting the seeds for a new generation of amazing people. sadly, she would never be part of this new elite of the future, but hearing a voice she knew well, she turned around with a smile. well, if she didnât believe herself to be great, here was at least someone who believed so.
â you know me well, togami. âsup !! itâs nice to see you again. â
âAnd you, Nakajima, although I canât promise that your cousin would feel the same. I believe heâs hiding in the music room at the moment, pretending he knows how to play an electric guitar--at least, I presume thatâs him I heard from the math hallway, because heâs even worse than Mioda, the resident âpunk rockerâ.â His voice practically dripped with annoyance, although it wasnât intentional. He was just naturally that peeved by the existence of Leon Kuwata, and trying to speak positively about him was nearly impossible.Â
âIf you wish to find him, I canât accompany you; If I get too close to that horrid noise Iâll have a headache for a week,â he paused, rolling his eyes as punctuation, âBut thatâs neither here nor there. How have your studies been going? I assume youâre doing well?â He hardly ever inquired about someone else, since that betrayed his interest in them as a person. With Nakajima, however, his defenses were automatically lowered. Something about her was so genuine, he never felt as if he needed to be as forceful to get his point across.Â
Shiori almost giggled at his logic; the fact that he was taking her suggestion so seriously was both touching and a bit concerning, but she couldnât help but be impressed by how quickly he was able to deduce the amount of time he had lost and would gain. Math truly was his passion as well as compartmentalizing and saving time; though she hadnât quite meant to light a fire within him it was better than watching him get into more arguments and fights, as she knew the other boys in his class wouldnât let up as long as he didnât. At times his self-righteous attitude could be worrisome, but she had learned to take it in stride; as long as she carefully guided him towards what was best without being too overt things would be fine, as he valued her advice just as much as she did his.
As she finished dabbing at his black eye she noticed that the swelling had gone down just a bit, even if the terrible color remained; standing up, she said, âIâm glad you think soâŚand Iâm glad I could help. But, umâŚI think your eye needs a bit more help, so Iâm going to go to the nurseâs office and grab you an ice pack so that we can reduce the swellingâŚIâll be right backâŚâ
Dropping off the washcloth she had been holding into the sink, she hurried off to the nurseâs office and was able to nab an ice pack without much ado; her fingers were nearly numb by the time she returned but she didnât mind as long as she was able to help, and once she had it wrapped up in a dry washcloth the sensation began to come back as she sat down next to him and held it up to his eye. She began to chew on her lip a little as he winced, the sudden cold surely uncomfortable; however, she knew that he would rather have it taken care of than walk around with a terrible bruise for the rest of the week, and with any luck it would heal quickly. Hopefully he wouldnât get himself into this much trouble again, as he seemed rather dedicated to carrying out her suggestionâŚ
While she was gone, the heir had to fight the urge to lie down and resign himself to his fate. He may be injured, but he was still a Togami; he couldnât let himself slack off, even now. He was grateful, however, to hear her return, and turned willingly towards her as she moved the ice pack towards his wound.
âTch...â
The sound escaped his lips involuntarily as the harsh cold of the ice pack met his tender skin. Once the shock passed, however, he found himself leaning into the pack in an effort to receive as much of its cooling effect as possible. It was as if the ice were absorbing his pain as well as the heat from his face. It couldnât remove all of the discomfort, but it was certainly an improvement over how he had felt a few minutes before. â...Thank you, Shiori...Iâm not entirely sure how you manage it, but you always leave me feeling better than I did. If I had been left to face this alone, itâs likely I would have just taken some medication and gone back to working anyway, and who knows how much this might have worsened.â
A brief image flitted across his mind--himself with a bruise that took up most of his face, lying in bed with a cartoonish looking hot water bottle on his head. Sadly enough, if he had tried to care for himself, it might actually have taken bedrest and professional medical attention to undo the damage he had done. He excelled at some things--math, calculations, finance, investments--but when it came to caring for his own body, he was more likely to forget to eat than to take vitamins or go âwork out.â
âThen weâll do just thatâit sounds like an excellent plan, though Iâd prefer to go to the Louve, at least first,â Byakuren admitted, trying not to draw attention to the reason why she didnât want to go to the towerâwhile it was beautiful and a structural masterpiece, she was terrified of heights and would rather not look down upon the city with fear creeping up her spine. They could always walk by it, of course, perhaps buy a few souvenirs for Shiori and their friends back at homeâŚbut she would rather today be a relaxed day, and they could always visit the MusĂŠe d'Orsay or the Arc de Triomphe to make up for it. However, if he was set on going, she wouldnât hold him backâas long as he was willing to hold her hand the entire time while she kept her eyes squeezed shutâŚ
Finishing off the rest of her bread with a long sip of coffee that burned the back of her throat, she gathered her things together and disposed of their trash in a nearby bin before coming back to the table, standing and staring at him rather expectantly. She had learned quickly that it wasnât worth it to try and hide her enthusiasm; she was overjoyed to be here and she wouldnât let anything stop her from experiencing her feelings to the fullest, as no one was going to judge her for doing so in a city full of strangers. Granted, some strange looks would probably be exchanged as they pulled out identification and membership cards that would pass them through any lines or ticket booths, but at the moment she didnât careâshe felt as free as the birds flying through the air, a lightness in her heart that she hadnât felt for quite some time. Soon enough they would have to leave and return to their businesslike demeanor upon arriving home, but for now she wanted to savor this for as long as she possibly couldâŚ
âThe Louvre it is,â her brother agreed, with a matching smile playing on his own lips as he rose to his feet, âItâs only a few blocks from here, so it shouldnât be much trouble to walk, as long as you donât mind.â He took a moment to stretch, sighing in contentment as the sun rested lightly on his head and shoulders, and the smell of fresh bread and coffee swirled around them. It was a beautiful day in Paris, and he, like his sister, couldnât be happier to be there. No matter where they went, it was sure to be a good experience simply because they had the chance to do as they pleased without interference from the company. As much as the two of them loved their work, they also loved being free.Â
Once his muscles were sufficiently relaxed, he tossed a few euros onto the table and hooked his arm through his twinâs, leading her away from the cafe and down the street. Around them swirled a busy parade of Parisians buying fresh bread from the day, or on their way to work. Strangely, rather  than feeling alienated by their ignorance of his identity, it made him feel as if the twins belonged there ,as part of the crowd. The bustle of the street pushed them naturally along towards their destination, like seeds from a dandelion caught in the wind. âItâs been far too long since we were at the Louvre. Iâm fairly certain theyâve received some new artworks, as well as a traveling collection from England. Is there anything in particular youâre looking forward to seeing, Onee-chan?â

Shiori nearly laughed at how stubborn he was, but instead she held it in and a smile passed across her lipsâshe should have known that he would refuse to admit he was wrong in a straightforward manner, but he still recognized his mistake if nothing else. That was progress, especially since he was willing to be on his best behavior for her sake and no one elseâs; when they first met he probably would have gotten himself into more trouble, and she wouldnât find his hesitancy as nearly as amusing as she did now. It was strange, to think that him getting into an argument and holding back would be so touching, and yetâit showed how much he cared about her, that he would allow his pride (and face) to become wounded just so that she wouldnât worry. Of course, it was also likely that he was doing so to maintain his reputation, but it couldnât hurt her to think that she had been able to facilitate some change, right?
However, she wouldnât truly change him for the world, as she loved him the way he wasâbruised eye, broken glasses, and all. âThank youâŚthat means a lot to me,â she said, gracing his cheek with a light kiss; âYouâre right, that he didnât deserve itâŚbut you donât deserve to get a black eye, eitherâŚperhaps next time you can let Ishimaru-kun or the teacher handle things so that you donât risk getting into trouble, and that way no one will get hurtâŚI know itâs hard for you to hold back when you know someoneâs wrong, butâŚif you spent all your time correcting everyone, you wouldnât have enough to do the things that really matter, rightâŚ? As long as you know youâre right, nothing else mattersâŚâ
âIf I spent all my time correcting...actually, thatâs quite brilliant, Shiori. I can only imagine how many weeks of my school year Iâd gain back by simply cutting out all the time I have to spend correcting others. If I simply let the teachers handle it, I can use the extra time to finish my work for The Conglomerate earlier, which in turn will leave me more time to spend with you.â Mentally he was already doing the calculations. He had seven classes a day with fifteen incompetent classmates, one of which generally contained a ten minute correction or argument at least, and there were five days in a school week with approximately forty-eight weeks in a school year...that meant he could save more than eleven days worth of time in a year by not correcting the idiots around him.
âThat may just be the answer. However, I wonât be able to allow the teachers to slide by on their mistakes, or all of the students will simply follow along like lemmings off of a cliff. That may force me to step in...ah well, thatâs still a great deal of time saved. But you and I will always know that I was the one who was correct.â Had anyone else tried to talk him out of correcting the other students he might have lashed out, but somehow coming from Shiori it seemed far more sensible. If he followed her advice, he was sure to have less trouble with most of his classmates, although something told him that Oowada and Kuwata would still find reasons to cause him trouble whenever they could.Â
Byakuren couldnât help but flinch a little as her door flung open without any warning and promptly slammed afterwards, her brother storming in with a terrible look on his face that surely reflected the fowl mood he was in. She could only imagine what had happened to him considering the whims of their classmates during lunch hour, but before she could even ask he blurted out some of the most ridiculous insults she had ever heard, causing her own face to twist into a grimace. Where on earth had they gotten such outlandish ideas from? Strangely enough she was more confused about the former comment than the latter, as she knew most everyone at Hopeâs Peak thought them to be heartless, uncaring, and cruelâbut most everyone also knew that theyâhe, rather; her side of the relationship was kept secretâhad a steady girlfriend, so why would they accuse him of being aâŚwhat was that, again?Â
âAnd what, dare I ask, made them say such terrible things about you?â she frowned, shaking her head with an exasperated sigh; as much as she wished she could have been there for him it was probably better that she hadnât been, as her fiercely protective nature most likely would have caused her to lash out at those idiots, causing even more trouble for everyone involved. âI shouldnât be surprised, and yetâŚour classmates continue to defy my expectations every single day. I do hope you realize that there isnât a gram of truth to their wordsâeven if you do prefer cats over dogs.â
âIâm glad you think so at least. The first year who poured a glass of punch over my head doesnât seem to agree. Apparently she had been leaving me love notes in my locker, and somehow my silence meant that I was eagerly awaiting the next letter--not throwing them away in the nearest dumpster without a second glance. So, when she came up to me and tried to confess her love, and I told her to leave me alone, that turned me into a heartless monster.â He rolled his eyes and threw his hands up in utter exasperation. âThese girls should know by now that Iâm happily taken, and I donât want anything to do with them, but somehow they just keep coming.â
While he knew it wasnât fair that his sister couldnât be public about her own relationship with Shiori, he was grateful that he could. Still, apparently that wasnât enough to keep impressionable young girls from harassing him in hopes of usurping her position in his life. How dare they? It was enough to make his blood boil that anyone would be so disrespectful not only to him but to her. It was utterly reprehensible--hence why he had been so harsh with that girl and all the others. All he could do now was hope that the rest of the school wouldnât side with that buffoon over his true girlfriend, simply because he had been cruel. After all, Shiori was on good terms with most of the students in their grade, and anyone who had ever met her would know that she was far too sweet to behave in the same way he had.Â
The heirâs room was much⌠neater than Chihiro had expected. Not that he thought Togami was a particularly messy person, but he was in slight awe at how ordered everything appeared to be.
The small programmer blinked a few times as he paced across the room, slow and clumsy, fighting off a yawn. He stared down at the laptop for a moment, as if unsure of what this device was, before everything clicked into place and he settled into a steady rhythm, fingers dancing across the keys. After tinkering around with the settings for a while, he turned back to Togami with a furrowed brow.
âWell, the good news is it isnât a virus,â he began, brushing some hair behind his ear, âalthough the bad news is that many of the files have been corrupted somehow⌠You may have to hard reset the system.â Chihiro tilted his head to one side, âI imagine itâs connected to a larger network, right? If any of the potentially corrupted files have been sent over it may cause a few issues, but nothing major-â he cut himself off with another yawn, rubbing his eyes and muttering out a weak apology.
A hard reset? Was the programmer actually trying to tell him that the only option was to completely remove all the files on his computer and perhaps even some from the Conglomerate main frame? There was no easy way to do that, even with the programmerâs elite skills. The network was massive, with data stored and sent across three continents. The heir might not be a computer expert, but even he knew that was a monumental task--and absolutely horrendous news for him. All the work, information, and photos he had stored on the computer would be lost completely if ther programmer went through with the reset...
âYouâve got to be kidding,â the heir muttered, a storm cloud immediately brewing in his expression. All his worst expectations had come true, and then some. But with the way the programmer was acting, wasnât it possible that the situation was being exaggerated out of proportion...?Â
âFujisaki, thatâs impossible. I havenât done anything that could have corrupted them without some kind of outside interference. Are you absolutely sure that thereâs no way to fix this without erasing the files?  Thereâs three days worth of work on this device that havenât been backed up to the Conglomerateâs main system, and itâs all vital information. There must be another option.âÂ
Shiori couldnât help but giggle softly as she watched and listened to him speak, comforted by the familiar furrowing of his brow, the intensity of his eyes as he took the time to thinkâand was most likely carried away by his thoughts, falling silent before shifting the topic onto her. It wasnât surprising at all that he would dream of work; judging by the look on his face, he was probably thinking about it outside of his dream. His obsession with work was a bit concerning, enough to have various medical professionals chide him and suggest a vacation or a day offâbut he brushed them away, continuing to spend too many hours at the office. When they had first met it had bothered her a bit, but she had learned to take it in stride; just because he loved to work didnât mean he loved her any less, even if she was lonely at times. However, she had been subtly attempting to guide him towards a healthier lifestyle, packing a lunch for him to eat and asking him to take breaks to see her while she workedâand while it had taken a few years, she could tell that she had made at least some progressâŚ
This was their day off, though, and she wouldnât allow herself to get carried away by thoughts of work, eitherâfor today it was best to focus on the present and think about the rest later, as they needed to make the most of their time together. Emerald eyes closed as teeth grazed against the supple flesh of her lower lip, chewing it gently in concentration; she had had a dream, though not quite outlandish as his; as it seemed work had been on his mind, this day off had been on hers. âYes, I did,â she began, âThough I didnât become a pilot in mineâŚI actually dreamed that we lied around in bed all day and did nothingâŚit wasnât the most exciting dream, but it was nice nonethelessâŚbut, ahâŚI donât think we should do that todayâŚunless youâd like toâŚâ
âWell, if youâre up for it, I donât mind. After all, this day is dedicated to us spending time together...â he felt his cheeks grow warm, but forced himself to stay steady with what he was saying instead of flinching away from being sensitive. After all, Shiori was the one person he could show his feelings around, even if he still wasnât very confident about it. Not only that, but spending the day relaxing really did sound like the perfect weekend. It wasnât his usual style, but after the kind of week the two of them had, they deserved the rest. Especially Shiori--she hadnât wanted to tell him, but he had managed to find out that she had been attacked by bank robbers and by a kidnapper this week, which meant that he was going to pamper her today whether she liked it or not.
âYouâve been through a lot this week, so itâs up to you how you want to relax. If you do want to stay here, I can have Mamoru bring us a tray, and we can either spend some time just talking, or we can continue reading our book.â It seemed almost too simple, being able to have this time off, but he had even gone so far as to power off his cell phone so that no one from the Conglomerate could reach him. He had realised a long time ago that the only way to keep himself from working on the weekends was to cut himself off âcold turkeyâ as Emiko would say. If he allowed himself even the slightest access to his company, he would quickly be pulled back into the mire of paperwork by those who believed they couldnât function without him. While that might be true, the company needed him to survive, they would just have to wait while he focused on a bigger priority--his own life.Â

Togami walked into his sisterâs dorm without knocking, far too preoccupied to bother with such social niceties. No, he walked into her room with the misery on his face just as clear as the bright red stain all over his suit. He had been planning what to say to explain himself when he arrived, but now that he opened his mouth to do so, all that came out was; âWell, apparently Iâm a no good âplayaâ whose only goal is to lead girls on and then destroy their hearts. Also apparently I kick puppies in my free time.â
Luckily his sister hadnât been around to see his lunchtime debacle, but the rest of the school certainly had plenty of time to get their once in a lifetime chance to watch a Togami falter and nearly stop, but there was simply no way that he was going to give someone so petty the chance they were looking for to get the attention they felt they deserved. There was just one real issue--his idea of getting what they deserved was far more likely to involve tangible things,

It had been a long and frustrating day filled with annoying classmates, rowdy neighbors, and failed chemistry experiments. After a bunsen burner-turned-inferno, his class had been excused for the rest of the day to ârecover from their injuries and shock.â Really, it was just a ploy to get Kuwata and Hagakure to stop playing with the fire extinguishers, but none of them were going to argue with a bit of extra free time, especially after being crammed into a claustrophobic inspection room in the nurseâs office.
Leaving the school building with a sigh, he spotted a familiar mop of blonde hair bobbing among the others, looking practically average in the sea of brightly colored and ridiculously styled students. Almost without realizing what he was doing, he found himself making a beeline for the self-proclaimed gyaru. She had been an interesting addition to his day the last time they spoke, so perhaps she could manage to brighten his afternoon a little with her innocent energy.Â
âHello, Nakajima. Sneaking around the Academy again to find your cousin?â
âWell, I can certainly say that Iâve learned my lesson in one wayâIf I ever intend to insult that neanderthal again, Iâll be doing it with a bodyguard present. I wonât be caught unawares again. As for fighting with himâŚIâll do my best to avoid it, for your sake.â He turned slightly pink as he finished, realizing that he had effectively shown his hand by admitting that she was one of the few people who could convince him to do something just by asking gently. Had the one to stop him been Ishimaru (who had tried exactly that) he would have fought even harder (which he did); it was simply part of his personality to push the bounds of any authority which tried to deter him from his goals.
âI knew from the beginning that Oowada was bad news, of course, I simply decided to give him the benefit of the doubt for a day. Clearly, he didnât deserve it.â His pout returned, leaving him feeling like a spoiled child in Shioriâs care instead of her boyfriend. Still, it was nice to have someone so nurturing around to help him nurse his bruised face and ego, Â even if he couldnât bring himself to tell her so directly after such a public demise. Thankfully this wouldnât go on his permanent record, as he hadnât initiated any physical contact--which meant that his police officer girlfriend wouldnât be stuck dating a delinquent. Theoretically if they had tried to give him a punishment, he could have threatened to cease funding their library and research department, but at this point it went without saying that this school couldnât function without his help.
