This moment meant everything to me. I got to see Taylor for the first time after eight years of waiting on the day I was celebrating ten months clean of my battle against self harm. For just over two years of my life from seventh to ninth grade, I had no real friends, self confidence or hope that things would get better. Each day dragged on slowly and I just wanted it to end. In the summer between eighth and ninth grade, my viewpoint on things started to change. I wanted happiness and to love myself more than anything else in the world. But, I simply didn’t have the strength to do it on my own. I would try to quit, but within a couple of days I would have a relapse. I was so close to giving up on trying when Shake It Off was released. That made things change. Taylor was right. No matter what I do in life, there are always going to be people who judge me and don’t like me. But, if I’m having fun and enjoying life, what they’re thinking shouldn’t matter. It was hard to give up a habit that I had developed for two years, but I did it. The last time I self harmed was on September 24th 2014. When 1989 was released, Clean instantly became my favorite song. It made me feel understood and I was overwhelmed with a feeling of proudness. I was, for the first time in my life, proud of myself for accomplishing something so important. By no means was stopping easy. I would spend countless nights laying in my bed, with my headphones in blasting Taylor’s music to distract me from what I was tempted to do. But, here I am. Stronger and happier than I ever have been before. On July 24th 2015, I was blessed with the opportunity to see the 1989 world tour. I wore a neon tutu with fairy lights in it and felt absolutely no shame when people from school walked by me while I waited in the Taylor Nation line. That was one of the most incredible days of my life because I got to celebrate 10 months clean with the person who got me there. During the bridge of Clean, Taylor was right above me kind of. I was sobbing, and it was glorious. I’m so so so thankful for that moment because in that moment, I had let everything go, and became truly and fully clean.
