Marcie grinned when she spotted Tobias – there weren’t many men who could pull off the Peter Pan tights with such grace and confidence. “Thank you! And don’t worry even if you didn’t bring anything. It’s more important that you’re here,” she smiled and gently patted the other’s shoulder. “Come on, let’s go get a drink, shall we?”

“Pretending you don’t care about the presents on your birthday feels like a sign of age.” Tobe said, teasingly. “But yes, unless that joke gets me kicked out then a drink sounds perfect.” He agreed, offering his arm and glancing at her.. “Allow me to escort you to the bar. What are you drinking?”

“Honestly, i’m considering murder. I think my house elf will help me cover it up, but he kind of likes her so he might have an attitude about it.” He set his drink down on the bar and raised his hand for another. “Seriously, I can’t live like this.”

“Your parents would just find someone more annoying.” Tobias said offhandedly, taking a sip of his drink before looking over. “Oh did you want me to be more empathetic? Uh..” He patted his friends shoulder. “I’m sure it’ll get better? But wait, what did she do this time?”

“Ah, there you are!” Marcie greeted the person, smiling brightly at them. “And I love your costume. Come on, do a little spin for me! You can’t say no, it’s my birthday,” she added as she took a sip of her wine.

“Any excuse to wear tights.” Tobe said with a grin, obediently doing a dramatic spin as he said. “Plus I figured there’d be like 20 Prince Charmings so Peter Pan it is.” He raised his glass, “But anyway, here’s to you, Happy Birthday. I did bring a present, it’s... somewhere.”

“Someone’s mom. That’s a lot of info,” he teased. “So, you come to a wedding instead?” Jackson snorted. “I hate these things. I wouldn’t have come if Rose hadn’t asked.”

Tobe shrugged. "It's my mom, I don't ask questions. She says jump, I jump." He looked around, “Yeah, weddings are pretty boring. I guess it’s probably more interesting if you’re the one getting married. You’d hope so anyway.” 

Albus was meandering around the reception area, a drink in his hand. He’d been away for way too long, it felt nice to be around people that he grew up with and ones that he had gotten close with. He straightened his suit as he simply people watched. Seeing everyone mingling without him made him realize that maybe he didn’t have to run anymore. He couldn’t help but blink when Tobe’s familiar frame came into sight. He felt his stomach tighten. Before Al left, seeing the other boy his nerves go haywire…he knew why but he didn’t want to face it. The curly haired boy licked his lips, a small smile gracing his lips. “Is that your way of asking for a drink? Er, I could get you one if you’d like.” 

Tobe hated that even the slightest smile from Albus was enough to make him feel something. He hesitated, something inside him still fighting to turn back because this was never going to work out and this wasn't a drink in a private place, it was a drink at a public wedding and that felt like new and foreign territory but in the end, the part of him that wanted to stay and talk to Albus won. He nodded and decided to stick with acting casual, like nothing had changed. "Okay. Sure. But you have to buy me a real drink, nothing too cheap." He couldn't help but automatically look suspiciously at the drink in the other boy's hand. "What are you drinking?"

“They’re both pure-bloods,” he drawled, lowering his glass from his lips. “And doctors. What did you expect?” Jackson raised a brow. “Why’d you come, though? No Halloween plans? I don’t think I’ve ever seen you two say one word to each other.”

Tobe gestured over in the vague direction of the bar. “My mom didn’t want to come alone. I think she’s friends with someone’s mom.” He glanced around the room. “Plus, I don’t think I’m that into Halloween anymore, it’s not fun now that I’m older.”

“Yeah, I know.” Cassie gave him a sympathetic look. “See if it happens again, I guess?” She reached out and slid her arm around one of his. “Let’s go get lunch or something. Distract you from the would-be relationship and overthinking. We can talk about how stressed I’m about to be getting a substitute for my class for the next week while I’m gone.”

Yeah, I’m really just going with the flow this time and what happens, happens.” Tobe  smiled. “Don’t be gone for too long, I won’t survive without you. But you’ve found someone, right? If not, I can maybe help. I know a few people. But yes, lunch sounds good. But please, some actual food. Nothing deep fried or instant.”

“I wasn’t that bad.” Cassie looked up at him, lips pursed. “It might not be a secret, but you didn’t tell me. So whatever.” She furrowed her brow as he spoke, letting out a breath when he was finished. “Well. He is pretty. Until he opens his mouth. You could do worse.” She looked at her friend for a moment, before continuing. “You know I hate when you do that. You’re also not that bad, so don’t limit yourself to a maybe recurrent one-night-stand. Even if he’s pretty,” Cassie added with a small smirk, before continuing, more seriously, “Do you like him?”

Tobe shrugged, pausing before saying, “Well, my last relationship... or whatever it was didn’t end well so I guess it bruised my ego or whatever.” Tobias paused to think for a moment, before putting his hands in his pockets before voicing his thoughts aloud. “I don’t know? I’ve never thought of him as more than a friend before, so I guess I’m letting myself play with the idea, but I don’t know yet? If that makes any sense. Plus, for all I know he’s regretting it so I’m trying not to over think it.”

“Mm,” she hummed in agreement, looking up at him. Cassie gave him a pleasant smile. “You haven’t, darling. You’re still breathing.” She tilted her head to the side and smirked, before snorting. “You didn’t tell me, no. But he’s my boyfriend’s best friend. I got a vibe. And now a confirmation.” She slid her arm around one of his, leading him away from the field. “I didn’t hear anything, but you were both doing this shifty eyes thing.” She looked up at him, considering her words for a moment. “He’s a…choice.”

"I mean, I was scared when you were pregnant, I'd do something to set you off." Tobias joked, he rolled his eyes. "Well, it's not a secret, I don't think?" He said, following her lead. He shrugged. "Yeah, probably not a good choice, but he's a decent enough friend that I think the friendship won't get fucked up. I don't think it'll be a long-term thing. I don't even know if it'll happen more than once yet. I mean I’m down for it to but I'm just going with the flow." Tobe glanced at her, "Plus at least he already knows that I'm a snob and what I'm like."

“Oh, sweetheart. It’s me. Everyone’s in awe of me always.” Cassie gave him a teasing look, before smirking. “But of course they will be. As they should.” She picked up her broom and walked over to him, snorting at his question. “No. Hugo would have been more upset if I hadn’t won.” She rested her broom against the fence and shrugged, feigning innocence. “Someone else on that team could probably use some cheering up, though. Just saying.”

Tobe laughed. "This is why we're friends isn't it? It's the ego size. It matches." He raised an eyebrow. "I guess upset siblings and cousins are better than upset you. I don't know, I've never pissed you off that badly, that I know of." Tobe rolled his eyes and gave her a mock angry look with no heat. "I'm not really the sympathetic type. And also, I don't recall telling you about that yet. I mean, we both know I was going to probably before this conversation was over but still it's the principle." He complained, mostly for the sake of complaining. "But what did you hear about it?"

“It was that fucking bad,” Jackson deadpanned, giving him a look. “Fuck off.” He rolled his eyes and followed him anyway. “Probably not. Honestly at this point, I don’t care. Screw my diet. I’ll just go into early retirement.” He looked at the other. “Quit smirking. I swear to Merlin, I will hex you.”

"In your defence, the rest of your team wasn't helping your case." Tobe hid a chuckle. "Okay, okay." He put on his best sympathetic face and swung an arm around the other man's shoulders. "I'll even buy you said gross greasy food, but I don't guarantee I will eat it, I've never tried anything that trashy in my life. But I won't judge you for it..." He paused. "Much."
