when I was in high school I had a literature teacher who had a policy of unlimited extra credit. All you had to do was read a book by a notable author (his discretion) and have a little chat with him after school to prove that you read it. No limits, no need for variety (one month I decided I really loved Kurt Vonnegut and just read everything of his I could get my hands on).
Yes, I was tearing through books constantly, and talking to this teacher at least weekly. Because even though I always loved reading as a kid, literature was always a very weak subject for me in terms of a teaching-to-standardized-test school setting (I just do awful on "what color were the curtains" type multiple choice questions. Those details don't stick in my memory THEY JUST DON'T). But that didn't matter for this class. I could just read my way out of any bad test score. I have always had fond memories of how I "fudged" my way through that class and "abused' the extra credit policy.
I was thinking about it again today, and only just now realized that he absolutely tricked me into being well-read, while my teenage self thought I was totally getting away with something. THAT MOTHERFUCKER. I hope he's doing well.

and it makes me so sad cuz he's also sooo nice to Nakamura and most likely he's extra silly around him bc that's the only person that hasn't done anything to make him feel judged, or like he has to put up a front
EDIT: OH AND I JUST REMEMBERED WHEN HE TALKS BACK TO THE TEACHERS???? Heโs got attitude, then him also idolizing otogiri sensei??? Maybe the only positive male role model in his life
He starts idolise Otogiri right after he protected and defended him against those unfair teachers, as if an adult acting like a shield for a child is a notion pretty rare to him.
I don't know if his parents are abusive, but at least with the cockroach mention, we could at least suspect they're poor so his parents work constantly and are barely at home, so his sister (who seems to be at university at the youngest) could be the one mostly taking care of him when he was little and compensate their parents' absence by being louding cheering for him to show him he is seen and loved.

So there's an interesting thing I noticed about Orka's color coding in ASM and the way it changes between different interactions.
For example, JerShu moments are commonly set during early dawn. There's a cool blue from the moonlight that shades the two, adding a sense of quiet mystique to their interactions.
Maybe it's to invoke a dream-like state where Shuri is stripped bare of her responsibilities and Jeremy is just a boy who misses his parents oh, so much. During the day, there's so much commotion and stress but when they're together at night, it's quiet and lonely, with only the moon watching over them. Because when morning comes, they're forced to return back to their normal lives like a Cinderella story.
On the other hand, NoShu moments are bright like a burning sun. It's a passionate watercolor of orange, pinks, and reds that bloom as they stare into each other's eyes.
It's pure romance the way you couldn't be sure whether the burn on their cheeks was because of the warm heat of the sun or because of something else. For a couple individually driven towards death, Nora and Shuri are experiencing living for the first time, when they're together. The way the light gleams on each other like they're always discovering new things about one another is just so perfectly lovely.
And then there's TheoShu. Theo and Shuri often interact in the morning, like a icy shock to the system. For a man plagued with too much guilt to sleep and a woman trapped in her nightmares, what's a more eerie wake-up call?
TheoShu as a morning motif is so interesting because we're faced with Theo who acts like he's still stuck in a dream where he's fated to be with Shuri and Shuri, who is trying to run away from those dreams and move on with her day. They're never quite on the same page, like the feeling you get when you're debating on getting up on a Monday morning.
Finally. RiShu. I find that Richelieu and Shuri are always in a strange state of limbo when they stumble upon each other. A space that only they know, where the light doesn't shine until Shuri walks in.
Richelieu is a man that exists in the shadows, lurking around in the dark underbrush. But he can't help but be drawn to that woman intruding upon that dark forest he lives in. She glows like a holy light piercing the black darkness. Shuri knows what it's like to die in that forest and Richelieu wants to know what path she took to get there.
I find it odd whenever people proclaim that Shuri falling in love with Nora who is a friend of Jeremy's/Jeremy falling in love with Shuri is some sort of horrible narrative that ruins the entire story โ because the themes of the story itself very much tackles how these children were forced to grow up too fast when the adults in their lives ruined everything for them, and how Jeremy and Nora have every single right to honestly not see Shuri as anything motherly because that too is a tragedy in that a fourteen year old girl had to step up and play mother to a boy (and younger children) who is only a year younger than herself, and although Shuri has been regressed, it still stands that Jeremy and Nora still view her as that โ only a year older than themselves.
