I still remember every word that you said
and us in the living room when everyone’s gone to bed,
I still remember the parties on Race Street,
where you told me loved me, where I found out you’d left me.
and you couldn’t know it, but I think I’m stuck here,
standing in front of this old rundown building, but nobody lives there anymore.
I stare inside the big glass front door, and I remember all the times I’ve done this before,
watching the staircase for your nonslip sneakers, the black satin vest,
and the liquor on your breath.
you still appear to me in your bartender’s uniform,
you turn the corner and you’re never any older, and god do I miss it,
how you’d let me in.
I'd follow you up to that 80’s apartment, the door didn’t lock and you slept on the floor.
we’d play foxes in the kitchen, but I never won.
you ran circles around me, you made me undone.
you’ve cut your hair now, and I heard you’re sober.
you moved to Newark, like you told me you would,
and I grew the bleach out and I lived through October
and I read all the books that you bought me.
now we’re different people, we’re something like strangers,
but you still have my tattoo on your arm,
I made the appointment to remove mine but I didn’t go.
there’s a woman I met at the Satire Lounge
one night when I was waiting for you to get off,
we drank sake together, she went home in a taxi
at 12:35 and I sat on the curb and watched Colfax go by,
until you came outside
and walked me all the way home.
she’s 65, and I still have her number,
sometimes I call her, and she’s always drunk,
she told me she’s single now and that she left her husband
because she caught him cheating with a girl from the Rotary Club.
I saw a psychic in Lakewood today,
and I lied and I told her that nothing had changed,
like Sarah never called me, well meaning and terrified,
and then she pulled my cards and told me anyway.
sometimes I pretend
that we’ll meet again,
and I won’t remember you and you’ll have to remind me,
and I try to picture the words that you’d say,
how your mouth would look as you explained
that you defended my honor the night that you left,
and you hoped that you’d never see her again.
It wouldn’t sound right, so I’d say I’m sorry,
and it would feel so strange, and the whole way home I’d worry,
and wonder why you were so charming,
and try to see if I could think of your name.

Telling the story again that was told to me by the man who is a leader in the worldwide Iranian church, whose organization is closely affiliated with and supported by my church. Once or twice a year he visits and tells us about the situation for Christians in Iran. So many powerful stories about the faith and sufferings of our Persian brothers and sisters.
At Christmas, they gather in each others' homes, not more than ten people to a home, and they decorate with generic birthday decorations, make a birthday cake, shutter their windows, and whisper Christmas carols and birthday songs to Jesus.
Once a year, the organization moves mountains to smuggle pastors out of the country so they can attend a training conference. Most of them have to take multiple forms of transport to cover their tracks, including walking on foot, and spend multiple days traveling. Even then, the first day of the conference is always spent in worship, and these exhausted men stay up all night, worshiping until their throats are hoarse. They sit on the floor when they're too tired to stand, but they don't stop singing at the top of their lungs, because this is something they never get to do. I've seen videos of these worship services, and I try to think about spending my whole life unable to worship out loud (I wasn't able to sing at church this morning as I'm recovering from oral surgery, and I missed it!). After the conference each man is sent back laden with Bibles and other resources hidden in microchips sewn into their clothes, tiny radio receivers with which they can listen to Christian Farsi radio stations. They risk their lives crossing the border this way. Every year more of them are arrested, tortured, killed. Not just them, but their wives and families as well.
Even still, they grow and grow. The man told a story about how satellite dishes are illegal in Tehran. The problem is, every building has one. The regime's supporters are outnumbered by satellite dishes, so they remain. His hope is that the church will grow in the same way, that one day its enemies will look up and realize they are outnumbered by the peacemakers, the sons and daughters of the Living God. He is in my prayers, and his organization (which, even from overseas, has been under threat from the regime), and especially my brothers and sisters in Iran. May they be free to worship God in the name of Jesus, loud enough for all to hear.
I'm gonna say it, I do think that even the laziest person imaginable should have a roof over their head, food in their stomach, and access to healthcare
