TMNT: This Family Never Stops Growing!!! How The ShiniRai Kids got their names
Being known as the Shredder's daughter was not a title easily forgotten.
For the longest time, I had owned it, even after learning the truth. It gave me power and immediate respect. It made it easy to claim loyalty during my rebellion against Shredder. Of course, they eventually found out the truth of my parentage and betrayed me.
It had been a mistake to begin with, rebuilding a clan solely out of revenge and spat against Shredder. All I saw was my goal, I did not really think of the consequences or the people that might get hurt. (One of the few things I had inherited from Shredder, though it hurts to admit)
After the whole fighting and betrayal, I honestly tried to leave the Foot Clan disbanded. I even considered joining my true family's clan but it did not take long for me to learn that their was no option, I had to rebuilt and take control of the Foot Clan because if I did not, then someone else would, someone perhaps even worse than Shredder, and with the Cultist still out there, wishing for my head, that was very likely to happen.
So, after I married Shinigami, she and I moved back to Japan to rebuild the Foot.
It was not an easy decision.
Though I had spent most of my life in Japan, New York was the only place I ever truly felt at home but I had to leave. Japan was still suffering for the effects of Shredder's reign and I had to make it right somehow, give the Foot a more honorable name...give myself one as well.
I no longer lived as Shredder's daughter but as Hamato Miwa, my true name that was given to me by my true parents and I also made a name for myself, "The Deadly Serpent"
Before long, I built a clan that accepted people who wanted a second chance at life, people who had no where to turn to and people who just had something to fight for. Everything seemed perfect but then...my advisor, Mori Toshiro, had voiced his concerns of my stalling on having an heir.
Motherhood was something I had never thought about. Not even considered. However, he was right, I do need an heir. Having an heir is the only way to secure the safety of the Foot. If something were to happen to me, I would need someone to take my place so that the Kabuto does not end up in the wrong hands.
After my niece Hamato Irrilia was born, Shinigami got hit with severe baby fever and basically doted on every baby she passed on the street.
So, I started to search for suitor after suitor, each worse than the last. All of them either wanted my hand in marriage or to claim power over the Foot. Sure, perhaps it would have been easier to just get a donor but when you lead a clan, it is always wise to find potential allies and having a child together, is the best way to make an alliance between clans but of course, that was always such a hard thing to find.
Luckily, I knew of one person who I could trust, one person who did not need power nor wished for my hand but I saved him as a last resort because...well...let us just say we had a history and Shinigami was not happy about it but her desire to have a child got her to agree.
After the whole ordeal was over, I was soon pregnant and we announced the news to everyone. Everyone was excited and we even had a big celebration as well as boring formalities.
Once again, I did not think of the consequences of my decision until it was too late...
Suddenly, I remembered why I never wanted to be a mother...
Lighting flashed as Hamato Miwa shrilled in pure agony.
She looked down, her vision blurred as a cold, sharp blade went through her stomach. She soon fell on her knees, gasping sharply and trembling violently, overcome by shock, and panic. She stared at the pool of blood that poured from her large bump where her baby lay inside then lifted her eyes at the person who had stabbed her.
She looked just in time to see the cruel grin of the Cultist as he growled, "In the name of Shredder." After that, before she knew it, he was quickly pulled off of her by a ninja wearing a dragon mask and black ninja garb.
He did not hesitate to snap the struggling Cultist's neck, killing him instantly before throwing him aside as he ran to her and started to put pressure on her wound. "You are going to be ok!"
"Miwa!" A voice cried and Miwa looked to see her wife, Shinigami, who had just finished fighting off the other Cultist, running toward them. She dropped next to her and took her face in her hands. "Look at me, darling!"
Now that Shinigami was by her side, The Ninja told her to keep pressure on her wound while he continued to fight. However, Miwa not focusing on any of that, she could not even feel the hard rain that started to fall on them. All she could focus on was her still bleeding stomach. "I-It's my fault," She stammered, "I-I killed them! I couldn't protect them, I couldn't-!"
"Shh..." Shinigami soothed. "Save your strength. This is not your fault."
Except it was. It really, really was. She had been careless. A fool to not think the Cultist would not come after her as soon as they found out she was pregnant with an heir. A heir was a threat to their chances of reclaiming the Foot, of course they would want to kill it as soon as possible, along with her and...they might have just succeeded. All because she dropped her guard, just for a second and out of nowhere, they attacked.
"Can you save them...?" She asked, shakily and Shinigami looked down at her belly, her expression focused. "I...I do not sense their spirit has departed."
"Then we have a chance!" The Ninja shouted as he came to them, now covered in the Cultist's blue blood. "We may have a chance to save the baby," He repeated. "But in order to do that, we will have to cut them out and if we do that then you might..." He trailed off, looking at Miwa and Shinigami's eyes widened. "Oh no! There must be another way!"
"Do it," Miwa said firmly and the two looked at her, Shinigami being quick to protest, "What?! Darling, no, you are not thinking clearly!"
"No, you're not thinking clearly! I'll die either way, Shini. We will never make it back in time for Donnie to fix this. I either bleed to death along with my baby or I die and my baby lives," She said stern then looked at him. "Do it."
The Ninja stared at her, looking like he was debating something before he gave a firm nod and knelt in front of her. His hand slowly went to grab the knife but just when he wrapped his hand around the handle, one was pointed at his throat. He looked from the corner of his eye, to see Shinigami giving him a murderous glare. "Do not dare go through with this otherwise I will-!"
"Shinigami!" Miwa shouted and Shinigami turned to her, face falling into sadness. "I will not let you die!"
"You would rather let our baby die?!" Miwa challenged and Shinigami froze.
"We do not have time for this, they're dying!" The man shouted. "Shini, please!" Miwa begged and Shinigami relented, slowly removing her blade as tears fell from her eyes. "Do not let them die."
"I was not planning on it," The Ninja promised and without missing a beat, he pulled out the knife, making Miwa scream as she arched her back in pain. "Keep your eyes on me, darling," Shinigami ordered in a comforting tone as she leaned over her and pinned her down to keep her still as The Ninja used the knife to cut her open.
Miwa was wailing non-stop as he dug his hands inside of her, moving around her organs while Shinigami kept talking to her, begging her to stay conscious and alive.
However, after a while, Miwa could not hear anything, not even the sounds of her own screams and her vision started to fade. Her body felt like it was draining and as her eyes began to flutter, struggling to stay awake, she looked down the alley to see the ghost of her mother.
With every blink, her mother came closer and closer until she was kneeling beside her. She said something that Miwa could quite not make out but the warm smile that her mother gave, told a silent promise that everything was going to be alright and just when her mother touched her shoulder-
"Waah!" The sound of a shrilling cry reached her ears and she jolted, feeling like she had just woken from a dream. Her mother was gone and when Miwa looked forward, she stared in disbelief when she saw a bloody covered infant in The Ninja's hands. "It's a boy."
Miwa could not resist the smile that crossed her lips, feeling such pride and relief as The Ninja quickly passed him off to Shinigami who wrapped the babe around her cape to keep him warm and protected from the harsh rain. "Oh, he is just darling..." She cooed while rocking him in her arms
Miwa smiled at her, tiredly but it was short-lived when she suddenly sat up, hissing in pain.
"Something's wrong," She said and The Ninja looked back down at her stomach, tensing at what he saw. "There's another baby!" He yelled and the two women looked surprised but had no time to process before he dug his hands back inside her, making her grit her teeth as she gripped her fists.
She tried her best to hold back from screaming until she felt weight finally lift from her. She took a breath of relief that the whole ordeal was over but blinked in confusion when she did not hear a cry.
She turned her head at Shinigami who looked horrified which was such an uncharacteristic expression for the Angel of Death.
"What's wrong?" She asked, a bit nervously and when Shinigami did not answer, she lifted her head to see a very still, and silent bloody covered baby in The Ninja's shaky hands. Miwa's blood instantly ran cold. "Are they-?!"
She was cut off when Shinigami gently pushed her back down with her free hand. "Stay down, darling," She said, her voice shaky as well as The Ninja turned the baby over and began stimulating them. He rubbed and patted their back, trying to get them to breathe.
Miwa could only watch helplessly and tears fell from her eyes as she prayed. 'Please, I don't want my baby to die! Take my life instead! Mother, please help them!'
The Ninja, getting fed up and desperate, then began CPR and after a few dreadfully long minutes, finally, they let out a pitiful hiccup that soon turned into ear-piercing wails. "Waaah!" The sound was like music to Miwa's ears and she as well as Shinigami were smiling wildly as tears of relief fell from their eyes.
The Ninja turned the relentless wiggling babe back around, looking relieved as well as he lifted them up. "It's a girl..." He announced softly and Miwa shot a look at Shinigami. "Seems we both got what we wanted..."
Shinigami crackled and whipped her tears. "Seems so."
Now that both her babies were alright, Miwa began to feel the adrenaline drain from her body and she slowly started to go limp. Shinigami instantly noticed and called to her, "Miwa?" She tried to answer her but could not find the strength as her eyes finally closed.
At first, she could not make sense of where she was.
She could hear faint noises that began to pull her from her sleep but she could not yet open her eyes. All she could make aware of was the pain. Terrible pain. Like her insides had been ripped out and rearranged.
She tried to open her eyes, to move but couldn't and she had a sense that it was because she was dosed on drugs. At first, panic filled her mind, remembering all those times she had been drugged as Shredder's prisoner but then, the faint noises grew clearer and she realized that they were not noises but voices.
"How long do you think it will be until she wakes?" A voice asked and Miwa recognized it as her wife's voice.
Feeling slowly came back to her as well, just in time for her to feel a hand stroke through her hair and a familiar warmth spread through her. She did not even need to hear his voice to know who it was. "Tang Shen slept night and day after Miwa was born, and that without going through...emergency surgery. Going through something like this, can take a heavy toll."
Surgery? She had surgery? Well, that explained her pain but, what kind of surgery did she have and why? Did another mission go wrong? Were they attacked? Did she get badly injured somehow? What happened?
"I am just glad she agreed to be the one to do this instead of me. I may have been trained as an assassin and I can handle any kind of torture I am put through but that...seemed to be a whole other level," Her wife said, and Miwa could hear the cringe in her tone.
"Indeed. That is why I am grateful that I am a man."
'What?! What did being a man have to do with this?!'Â She wanted to ask but could not find her voice, still very weak but strength was slowly coming back to her.
A sudden wail startled Miwa's thoughts and before she could start wondering what that was, her wife's voice answered for her, "Oh, it is alright, my little Spitfire."
"Spitfire?" She heard her father ask in an amused tone and her wife giggled. "Yes, she is my little spitfire. In the last few days, she has already proven that she is just like Miwa. Fiercely demanding and so, she is my spitfire."
Miwa wanted to throw a witty comment at that but again, her mouth still would not obey. "Have you decided on names yet?" Her father then asked. "Well...Miwa already knew what she wanted to name the baby if we had a son, but we did not think for a girl."
"Weren't you the one who wanted a daughter? Didn't you think of any names?"
"Yes, I did but...I am always terrible at naming things! I just can not decide and Miwa, does not want to name our children something that is meaningless."
"I can understand that" Her father agreed. "How do you think she will react once she learns that we had twins?" Her wife asked, a hint of nervousness in her tone.
It was then that Miwa was finally able to open her eyes. Her wife gasped, "Is she waking up?"
Miwa cracked open her eyes, flinching slightly at the brightness of the room she was in before she opened her eyes fully, to see her father and wife sitting on either side of her bed.
She slowly sat up, grunting in pain at the action but she pushed through as she adjusted from finally being awake. "How long was I out?" She asked, her voice rough and dry, from lack of water.
"A week," Shinigami answered as Splinter handed her a cup of water which she gratefully accepted. She chugged the whole thing down before passing it back to him. "How is your pain, my daughter?"
"Terrible," Miwa groaned miserably and Splinter chuckled while rubbing her head. "Well, I am sure a nurse will be here shortly to give you medication." Miwa scowled in confusion. "How am I still alive? What happened after I blacked out?"
"After you passed out, your brothers found us and Donatello quickly, portaled us to the Utrome Hospital. They put you in a tub of mutation in order to heal you, like they did for Splinty," Shinigami explained and Miwa blinked a couple times. "And the Cultist? What happened to them?"
"We were able to chase them off but I fear, we have not seen the last of them." Miwa frowned at that as she tried to process everything that had happened. She could not believe she and her babies made it out alive.
Speaking of her babies...
Miwa looked at the pink bundle in Shinigami's arms and at the floating heat lamp pod that was beside her, where her other baby slept. "Are they ok?" She asked, her voice cracking a little as she remembered how she almost lost one of them.
"Yes. We had a bit of a scare but, despite being so young, they are both very strong. Just like their mummy."
"One boy and one cute little girl. The boy is the eldest, in case you were wondering," Shinigami responded as she came closer. "Do you wish to hold them?"
Hesitating briefly, Miwa nodded and Shinigami smiled as she passed her their daughter while Splinter went to give her their son. She held each baby on either arm, her son on her right and her daughter on her left.
Her son was a pretty big baby but not by much. He has black hair, tan-skin, Miwa's nose, and big almond shaped amber eyes. Her eyes started to fill with tears at the sight of him. Despite how hidden she is with her emotions, this whole experience has been a huge roller coaster ride that became more than she could handle. She is just so happy that he was here and he is just so beautiful. She will probably scold herself for it later but right now, she just could not care.
She then looked at her daughter, who looked much like her. Both of her babies looked like her but there was some feature difference with the boy, the girl however, was her exact image.
She has black hair, tan skin, Miwa's nose, and big bright almond shaped amber eyes. Her daughter was a bit smaller than her brother but she seemed to have more fire. The way she squirmed relentlessly in her bundle, just made her want to smile. She understood Shinigami's little nickname for her now.
"Do they not look just like you, Darling?" Shinigami mused with a warm smile. "They are defiantly yours."
"Yours too," Miwa corrected. "You both should be very proud. They are beautiful," Splinter said smiling down at the twins, making Miwa smile. "Where are my brothers?"
"Still in the waiting room. I will go let them know that you are awake but fair warning, if you do not have names for your children by the time I come back, Michelangelo might end up naming them for you," Splinter joked as he got up and walked out of the room.
She had no name for her daughter.
The room fell heavily silent as soon as Splinter left, with Miwa still staring at her babies with an unreadable expression as she held them close, so that she could feel their heart beats, assuring herself that they were still alive and well.
"That was pretty horrific, wasn't it?" Shinigami said after a while. 'Horrific is an understatement,' Miwa thought to herself as she began to rock her children. "Yeah, probably the most horrifying thing I have ever been through and I was raised by Shredder."
"Indeed," Shinigami agreed with a light laugh that did not quite reach her eyes. "I have never been so afraid in my life. I thought I had lost you...and them."
Miwa frowned, finally ripping her eyes away from her babies to look at her wife. "Do you understand now? Why it took me so long to agree to have a child of my own?"
Shinigami furrowed her brows and lowered her head. "Yes. I do..."
Miwa shook her head at herself. "My life is so dangerous Shini. What kind of mother would want this life for their children? The dangers they will have to face, the burdens they will have to carry, and all for the sake of the clan. You know, I used to be mad at my mother for trying to choose for me, for not wanting me to be a kunoichi but now...I get it. I understand now why she wanted to take me away."
"So, what do you want to do? You know I will follow you wherever, darling," Shinigami asked, gently with a supportive smile that made Miwa quirk her lips upward a bit before she sighed, "I don't know...Yes, what happened was terrifying but what happened was also a real reminder of why I need an heir. The Cultist will stop at nothing to take back the Foot! I have to make sure that never happens and the only way to secure that, is if I have someone to take my place when I am gone. Even though I don't want to, I feel like I have to train them and prepare them. It is the only way I know how to keep them safe. If I don't then they will be in far more danger...and so will the clan."
"Understandable," Shinigami agreed. "Anything else?" Miwa pondered for a moment. "Yes. Until they are grown, I want them to have somewhat of a normal life. I want them to go to school, make friends and experience things I never got to..."
Shinigami made a face but sighed, "If that is what you wish, my darling."
Miwa smiled, knowing how Shinigami felt about normality but her children will grow to have big responsibilities one day. Before that happens, she wants them to enjoy their youth as much as possible...something she never got the chance to do...
"So now that's all settled, can we decide on a name? We do not have much longer until Michelangelo comes in," Shinigami crackled and Miwa chuckled, "Yes and I think I know what I want to name her."
"During my...labor...I think I saw my mother, Shini," Miwa whispered with a soft smile and Shinigami looked a bit surprised. "I don't know if it was my imagination from the pain but it felt real and she said something to me. I don't know what it was, I couldn't hear her, I could only see her and I prayed for her to save our babies...and she ended up saving all three of us..."
Shinigami gave a warm smile, knowing for a fact Miwa did not imagine it. One of the Angel of Death's many abilities is being able to see the dead and she indeed saw Tang Shen that night. At first, when she saw Shen, she feared it was because she was taking Miwa or her babies away but thankfully, she was there to save them and she will be forever grateful to her for that. She even made a mental note to herself to leave an offering at the shrine later.
"So, I am assuming you wish to name our daughter after your mother?"
"Not exactly," Miwa cringed. "I mean, that would be kind of weird, because of his name," She said while nodding down to her son. "But I do have another name in mind."
"What is it?" Shinigami asked and Miwa leaned to whisper it in her ear. "I love it!"
"Sooo~Â What are their names, what are their names?!" Mikey asked anxiously, earning a rough nudge on the shoulder from Raph. "Well, if you let her speak!"
"I still can not believe you guys had twins?! I did not see that coming!" April exclaimed as she looked at the babes. "It is odd considering twins do not run in our family," Donnie added then looked at his father, questionably. "Does it?"
"Blah, blah, blah! Who cares?! What are the names?!" Mikey asked again, impatiently and Miwa smirked as she glanced at Shinigami who nodded. "You guys really want to know?"
When everyone gave a nod, Miwa first picked up her daughter and showed her off to her family. "This is our daughter; she is the youngest of the two and we just decided on a name before you guys came in."
"What is it?" Leo urged, curiously. "Her name is Hamato Amai. She is named after our mother's great ancestor, Tang Amaya but I shortened it to Amai so that it could also be her own name. Her name means, "Grace, cherry blossom, and brightness." I wanted to pick something that came from Mother and I thought the name Amai was perfect."
"It's a beautiful name, sis but why not just name her Shen?" Raph asked with a raised brow. "Because of what our son's name is."
Everyone threw each other confused glances as Miwa handed Amai to Shinigami, so that she could pick up her son. With a bit of hesitation, Miwa proudly announced, "This is our son and he is named after someone very special, and it is with great honor that his name is...Hamato Yoshi. "The greatest among the rest".
Splinter looked taken off guard as a touch expression crossed his face and a smile bloomed over his snout. "Miwa...I-I do not even know what to say," He chuckled at himself and went to hug her. "Thank you."
Miwa happily hugged him in return before she handed him his grandson who he gladly took in his arms. As everyone else began to dote on the babies, Leo approached his sister and Shinigami with a curious look on his face. "Where is he?"
Miwa frowned and answered honestly, "I don't know," She turned to her wife. "Shini?"
Shinigami rolled her eyes in utter annoyance. "He said he had to 'take care of something.'"
Miwa rolled her eyes as well but shrugged, not really all that surprised. However, Leo looked angry at this information. "It's fine, Leo," She promised. "Maybe he will come by later."
Her brother did not look convinced but decided to change the subject. "As soon as you are fully recovered, we should set up a meeting to discuss the Cultist situation....I also think Pimiko should be there."
Miwa flinched aback by the mention of her sister then scowled, sternly. "She doesn't want to be involved." Shinigami scoffed. "Well, the only reason we are dealing with the Cultist again is because of-"
"Shini!" Miwa scolded. "This was not her fault. How was she supposed to know this would happen?"
"Well, regardless," Leo spoke up, "If the Cultist came after you, they might come after her as well. We have to be more prepared for them and... whether she likes it or not, Mi... Pimiko is already involved."
Miwa frowned, looking conflicted but nodded in agreement. "I'll talk to her but I give no promises."
"Guys look!" Mikey's sudden gasped, caused everyone's attention to turn and they all looked over to see Yoshi transforming into a mutant viper with white, gray razor sharp scales, jade green slitted eyes, and snakehead hands.
Shortly after him, Amai transformed too. She turned into a mutant cobra with black, white scales, jade green slitted eyes, snakehead hands, and a sharp blade at the end of her tail.
"Looks like they have inherited your mutant ability," Donnie noted and Miwa sighed. "Great. Motherhood is going to suck, isn't it?"
Shinigami giggled. "We will soon find out~"
Miwa was sleeping soundly next to her wife when something suddenly awoke her. She sat up and looked over at the pods that her children were sleeping in, to see a familiar ninja standing over them
He did not seem to have noticed her. So, she slowly stood and quietly walked over to stand next to him, wrapping her robe over her chest. "You can hold them, you know?" She sudden voice caused The Ninja to jump violently and he spun around to glare at her.
She laughed at his reaction. "You haven't gone rusty over the years, have you?" He narrowed his eyes at her then muttered, "I forgot you were a light sleeper."
"I have to be when I have hundreds of people trying to kill," Miwa shrugged and The Ninja did not respond to that, instead he dug something out of his pocket. "I made something for them."
Miwa looked surprised as he handed her a black box and when she opened it, she smiled at the two twin black necklaces that were inside. The necklaces were shaped as the yin and yang signs, with dragon cravings on them. "They're beautiful."
"I..." He hesitated while handing her another box. "Made something for you too." With a raised brow, Miwa took the box and gasped when she opened it. Inside, was a sliver shaped snake hair pin with red rhinestones in it. "I...why would you-?"
"I was told those rhinestones were made from the fiercest of fires," The Ninja mused. "The shape was hard to make but I managed, I thought it was suitable...for a queen." Miwa snorted. "I am no queen."
"Tell that to my people," The Ninja muttered and Miwa stared at him, aback then said in an amused tone, "Just don't tell Shinigami that." The Ninja nodded in understanding before looking back at the babes who were sleeping peacefully in their pods. "They look like you. That's good, hopefully they will take after you too."
"I don't want them to be anything like me," Miwa mumbled, looking over them with a shameful expression. "Shini and I decided, long before they were born that they will not know me as Karai. They can never know of my time with Shredder, the things that I have done and...the people I have hurt."
"You will never tell them?" The Ninja asked, curiously. "Maybe when they are older...but knowing would just put them in more danger. I have enemies who want me killed for betraying Shredder but I have even more enemies who want me dead for the things I have done as Karai. If anyone knew they were 'Oroku Karai's' children, they will have just as many targets on their backs as I do."
"Don't be too hard on yourself about it. We all did things we regret in that clan. I was way worse than you."
"But you left," Miwa pointed out. "Way sooner than I did. You weren't as blind as I was."
"I didn't exactly have a choice to leave," The Ninja said in a bitter and hateful tone that made Miwa give a remorseful expression that she could not suppress. Noticing it, he quickly cleared his throat and stated in a softer tone, "You changed. That's not something everyone can do. Even after I left, I didn't exactly do good things."
Miwa wanted to ask what sort of things he meant but decided not to push it. "So, Yoshi and Amai, huh?" He asked, changing the subject. "Yes. Sorry, maybe I should have included you."
"No. I like them. Oh and by the way, I don't know what you were planning to do with the last names but you don't have to add mine. I'm fine with being the last Hattori in my family."
"Well, Shinigami will be happy to hear that," Miwa smiled and The Ninja huffed a laugh before turning to leave. "I'll stay in touch."
Miwa watched him go then turned to her babies with a sigh. "Your father will never change..."Â
