if you'd be an object for...let's sayyyy a week. what would your pick be?
JF: I'd be my cats. They are so spoiled!
how goes the quest for Chicago-style sport peppers?
JF: I was just considering buying the mild variety, but haven't gotten to it yet. I did just order some Market Grocery olive marinade from New Orleans. Can't wait for that!
Have you heard of or watched gravity falls? It's a Disney kids show and it's really great, but the creator Alex Hirsch is a fan of tmbg and took partial inspiration from you guys to include backwards speech into the show!
There's a podcast on the show where him and some other cast members talk about what it was like to work on the episodes and he mentions how your music helped him get into loving reversed speech even to the point of learning to talk backwards. I don't remember which episode it was but I thought you'd like to know :)
JF: interesting!
whats the possibility of playing a gig in the philippines
JF: that would be amazing!

I notice it's mostly John F answering here, but I'll hope you'll pass this along to John L!
First time I heard you I was 3 and listening to Here Come the ABCs. Until recently I only had the puppet versions of you in my head, didn't even realize you did things outside of that.
And I still come back to those songs, not just for nostalgia but because they're bangers. Can You Find It? And Alphabet Lost and Found are still on repeat for me, 20 years later. Maybe I missed it, but where did the idea to do children's records come from? They were foundational for me.
JF: it was an idea that people came to us with, and as we were diversifying our approach (taking on outside work in television and advertising) it seemed like an interesting opportunity if done right.
What is all 8 people in the band’s favorite color?
JF: aubergine.
what happened to the Avatars of They twitter account?! we need them now more than ever!
JF: so many accounts! It's hard to keep up!
any reason why the mono puff discography was taken off of spotify?
JF: it is being "moved" from one rights/fulfillment operation to another (I don't even know what to call it) but should be back online in a day or so.
(If you have one) What is your favorite cartoon depiction of you and John?
JF: It's all strange but also flattering.

TMBG mentioned on Jeopardy! tonight
JF: whAT!?
Mr. Flansburgh, do you remember what kind of cigars were you smoking on Mono Puff’s “It’s Fun To Steal” album cover?
JF: they were not as cheap as one might suspect! But as an only occasional partaker in the wild and wooly experience that is encountering a cigar, I have no memory of the brand.
hello!! question for Mr. John Flansburgh, do you have any tips on getting better at playing guitar? I've been playing for almost a year now and I'd love to hear some tips from one of my biggest inspirations. thanks!!!
JF: well, I wish I knew how to get better still!
But this is my most simple advice. Find a half hour show to watch on tv or your computer when you get home from work every day. Grab something to drink, and quietly play scales (maybe with a metronome on your phone keeping you in time)--yes just a major or a minor scale, or a two octave scale across all six strings, and go up the neck as far you can too. Even if you are just looking to play chords, this is the fastest way to improve your pick accuracy on your picking hand, and your finger strength on your fretting hand.
There are lots of pattern based exercise videos, like this
which might be useful, but practicing scales and arpeggios has the added extra value of reminding you how the fretboard actually works musically.
Hey!! Flans, have you ever used the Chessmaster for any studio recording?
JF: I have! I kind of went through a humbucker phase in the mid-90s but it was often the second guitar at sessions. (It plays in tune very well, but it had a nagging electronics issue that held it back a bit)
hi flans ive been working on a mink car font using the letters you made for the album cover and also that one shirt, while also making up the letters that didnt exist before... what do you think!!!
JF: wow. Amazing. It is working pretty good!

who designed the cartoon science johns? and did you guys have any input on how they would look? (i think i thought of this question because i was wondering if you and JL’s favorite colors were blue and yellow respectively, or if those colors just looked best for the album)
- sending seventy-six accordions worth of regards from louisiana :}
JF: David Cowles was the mastermind behind their design. He's been one of our most valuable collaborators for a very long time.
David Cowles (pronounced "coals"; born November 3, 1961), renowned caricature artist and illustrator, has directed, produced, and designed m
Very important question for the Johns: what are your favorite tributes/pastiches to your music?
JF: I know this might sound strange or diva-ish but I have a very hard time thinking about how what we do "adds up" in the culture, and while I know the tributes/pastiches come from a loving place, I kind can't deal with it. To me the good part of TMBG is the sprawl of ideas, so when it's summed up it feels a little less than. But that's me--to quote Erykah Badu "Am an artist. I'm sensitive about my shit."
