Lights, cameras, action! Young parents told ‘Time to shine’

A group representing more than 180 graduates from DHHS’ Division of Public Health, Adolescent Parenting and Young Families Connect programs, heard praise and encouragement recently during the 2015 graduation conference in Raleigh. This year’s conference theme: Lights, Camera, Action! It’s Your Time to Shine.
Kristen Carroll, team leader for DPH’s Teen Pregnancy Prevention Initiative, and Tanya Bass, program coordinator for the Young Families Connect program, applauded the graduates for their perseverance, their will and their success, and challenged them to do more.
Guest speaker Kiesha Cousar, CEO of Cousar Empowerment, LLC and founder of EmpowerHER! Every girl. Every woman. Everywhere, acknowledged the teens’ hard work that helped them graduate, and emphasized the importance of rising above obstacles while continuing to work to achieve goals.
The Adolescent Parenting program funds evidence-based home visit programs across the state with the goals of preventing repeat teen pregnancy, school dropout, and improving teens’ parenting skills. Participants receive a monthly home visit, individualized goal plan, intensive case management services and group educational sessions.
Young Families Connect provides services that promote self-sufficiency, health and wellness, and parenting skills for expectant and parenting women and men ages 13-24 years in five counties in North Carolina. Participants receive monthly case management services, quarterly updates to individualized goal plans, and educational sessions.
