someone got whammied by that dodgeball
contemplating whether i should queue the Destiel meme for March 28, 2026
don't. because i'm gonna
well now i have to do it too :)
it will be a battle of the ages
actually im thinking we should queue it with our own predictions for his death too...
I know I say that I'm kinda nuts for doing the amount of visual research I do, but at the same time: Specificity is SO much more compelling and real feeling, and imo not getting references often makes things look more amateur.
Eg. drawing a sofa- my mental image of a sofa is something like this:
Like. Its a sofa. It works. But it's not very convincing, the pillows are kinda wrong at the back, and it's not really giving any information about the owner. Even if you want a basic sofa... What kind of basic.
comfy and cheap?
kinda rigid?
inherited? ------
who does this comfy cheap ikea sofa belong to anyway?
guy living alone?
teenage girl?
Grandma?
Anyway I'll get off my soapbox but specificity is sexy and fun and it can do your storytelling for you!
this is one of my fav tweets of all time and i think of it everytime i listen 2 the song
no because the first time he was doing just fine but the second time he was doing JUST fine
The curse of a mathematician is to work in a disliked field
It's all fun and games until someone asks you what you do for a living and you're like "math :D" and they reply something along the lines of "whoa I always hated math in school" or "wow you must be sooo smart" or "rather you than me because math fucking sucks" like what would you do if you hyped to me about something and I replied like that. Like replace math in these replies by history or astrophysics or social studies or literature or engineering or embroidery or writing and suddenly they turn into deranged things to say to people who love that.
Btw this always happens. At home during dinner with parents, catching up with old friends, at the hairdresser, making smalltalk at a social event, in the tags of my posts (especially weird since this is a MATH blog).
If any of these tags on my viral math post are yours that makes you the problem btw
This post has been making the rounds again and the update to this is that this is still true, but somehow I'm also experiencing the OPPOSITE problem.
In the last two years since I made this post, I've been moving away a bit from just math. Rather, I'm now combining it with more societal topics (science policy, museumology, artscience, citizen science etc) (I'm writing a new thesis about science theatre and I'm almost done!)
Finally people in the public start to actually understand what I'm doing or working on, but what happens when you tell the average mathematician you want to work with art and culture for a living? They don't care. Not only that, they actively do not understand.
I say average because of course there's more nuance, but in my circles there's a lot of people who do not care about anything but STEM, programming or earning money. And that shit fucking hurts.

Imagine being cast in a Lady Gaga concert as Lady Gaga because Lady Gaga wants to do this to Lady Gaga
yall are really into this one huh
some of yall didn't know that Lady Gaga is currently touring a concert that's plot revolves around toxic yuri selfcest and it really shows
Ive come up with the phrase "blorbo-in-law" which is a fictional character who isn't, like, YOUR blorbo from YOUR shows but it is your mutual's blorbo who you nevertheless have developed strong opinions about due to long term dash exposure
I had a tattoo client ask if I ever used AI to design tattoos for me. Man I spent the better part of a decade doing shitty bit work as a graphic designer and now that I have the space to do whatever I want, I'm gonna let the computer generate random garbage for me? What next should I have a computer that eats my dinner and fucks my wife?
I feel like people get so hung up on the results of a thing that they don't appreciate that the process of making it is, actually, enjoyable.
It's like if you have a friend who likes to bake, asking if they'd like to just buy cupcakes from the store instead of making them. The end result of the cupcake is secondary to the joy you get from having made cupcakes.
Art isn't a slog or a chore or something I want to avoid. Art is fun. It's rewarding. It feels good to do it. You may as well be asking me if I want the AI to watch television for me, it doesn't make any sense, I'm not participating and would gain nothing from it.
Reblogging this here because I feel this way about creative writing vs. AI generated writing as well

scars in fiction: I got this trying to save my lover from an assassin- but tragically, I was too late. now I carry the mark of my failure with me always, and I can never forget~
scars in real life: so I was trying to open macaroni sauce with a paring knife
Tell me how you got your scars in the tags
ahh yes. My favourite character.
