Heat vs Steele Pt 11
“Can’t believe I’m doing this, it’s so shady! Why does Logan trust that guy?!” Roman mutters under his breath and readjusts the mask covering the lower half of his face. At this moment in time, he couldn’t allow his identity to be known, lest he accidentally lead someone to Logan’s location and cause a disastrous outcome. The cloak that Virgil had lent him from his own back flutters in the breeze as Roman ducks into an alley between the bookstore and an alchemist’s home, the Rowdy Rook, with herbs hanging out of the window. He can hear the fluttering of missing and wanted posters hanging up on the billboards on the street with his name written in black ink next to the royal sigils. A short description of his ‘crimes’ included kidnapping of the crown prince and assault of a royal guard along with misuse of magic and property damage of the prince’s bedchambers.
He grips the brooch borrowed from Logan’s spare clothes, holding the cloak closed as he passes the specialty sign and edges down the darkened hall of stone, hand on the hidden dagger at his hip. As he walks further down the alley, the noises of the bustling marketplace are drowned out by the silence and occasional caw of the raven watching him from its nest on the Rowdy Rook’s rooftop. The hairs on the back of his neck stand on end as those eyes pierce into what he feels is his soul, never leaving his form until he gets to the second door three paces down and knocks in the pattern Virgil had given him, 4-6-3. Nothing happens and after a moment of standing there like a fool, he tries again. The raven caws and seems to laugh at him as Roman turns to glare at it,” What do you know, you’re a bird?! Stop laughing at me!”
It caws again and flies down to a window a little higher than the door, tapping the glass in a 3-6-4 pattern. Then hops in through the opening. Not one to be shown up by a bird of all things, seriously what is with the arrogance in this kingdom if even its birds think they’re better than him, Roman taps the same pattern on the wood and slips through the crack provided when the door silently opens to him. Inside is a bar, albeit void of any patrons and for a brief moment, Roman wonders how Virgil knows about it, seeing as the knight does his work best in the shadows by Logan’s side. The raven was nowhere to be seen and Roman notes that the window it had gone through wasn’t on the wall where it should have been.
No matter, he was here for someone’s help and Logan needed it badly with the injuries he had caused. Roman approaches the bar and takes the stool in the corner like the cool morally grey characters he had read about in his stories. It's almost too quiet and it isn’t until he looks over the bar does he see the bartender staring up at him. Is that a child staring back at him?!
“Must be a rough day if you’re day-drinking already. What can I get you?”
Ok, that was definitely a child’s voice.
“I’m the owner’s son so don’t worry about any breaches of child labor policy.”
Roman nods a bit and sighs,” can I get a pint of Angel’s Fall?”
The little girl is quiet for a moment before she nods and ducks down under the counter. After a minute, she pops back up with a key and waves for Roman to come behind the bar. He awkwardly walks around as the girl removes a bottle of the darkest wine roman’s ever seen and fits the key into a keyhole that had been hidden behind it, opening the secret door the girl had climbed up to open. She hops down and pushes Roman in, looking behind her despite there being no one else in the bar. She giggles and closes the door behind him, leaving Roman alone at the base of a staircase leading up to the second floor. He contemplates turning around, but the click of the lock scraps that idea instantly.
With nowhere else to go, he sighs and starts the short climb up as a soft voice grows louder with each step until he’s in front of a simple wooden door. Well, if you count a golden handle and trimming as simple. He reaches out and grits his teeth before knocking on the door. The voice goes silent before the door creaks open to a lavish room with a mahogany desk and plush chairs, two behind and one in front. But the occupant wasn’t there. Roman pauses, starting to turn and search, but freezes as cold metal presses against his throat and a voice hums next to his ear,” well, this is interesting. Kadevar didn’t mention that the visitor was of warm blood.”
Roman shivers and leans away before the blade tilts to press into the skin of his jugular and stops him.
“Easy on him, Caduceus, it's clearly his first time dealing in the shadows.” A voice purrs too close for comfort as Roman can feel fingers play with his cloak before settling on the brooch and pause,” release him, he has Wraith’s symbol.”
The blade drags against his throat menacingly as it pulls away and Roman stumbles away to see the face of… nothing?
A chuckle rises close to the desk,” look in the brooch, warm blood.”
He fumbles with the apparently very important accessory and pulls it up to his eye, gaping at the two men that he can now see somehow? The taller one with pitch black eyes was lounging on the back of one of the chairs behind the desk where the second man was playing with the dagger that had previously been at Roman’s throat. He points the tip of the blade towards one of the chairs in front of the desk and leans his head back to look up at the black eyes of his partner. Roman keeps the brooch up to watch them as he takes the seat and the first man twines his fingers on the desk to look at him,” you have Wraith’s sign so it must be an emergency if he sent someone else. Where is he?”
“...Wraith?”
Those four eyes stare at him before the one behind the chair taps his own brooch and Roman ‘oh’s in realization,” yes, um, Wraith. He’s in the forest at the moment, but he’s injured and-.”
“Easy, Caduceus, let him speak before you run off.” The one Roman assumes is Caduceus taps his finger on the desk as the other sets a hand on his shoulder. He’s adorned in a white poet’s tunic with black pants and knee high, heeled boots. A belt corset hugs his waist while a golden chain hangs from his neck. A golden serpent is entwined up his left forearm while his right hand has a bracelet chained to rings on his ring and pointer finger. His eyes are slitted like a reptile’s and Roman can see the edge of scales peeking out over his collar that dipped just a little too low to be modest.
His partner, as Roman will dub him for now, was much more simply dressed. He was dressed in a similar fashion with the basic poet shirt and black pants, but Roman could see dim, silver stars embroidered on the hip and thighs when he turned earlier. A silver chain hangs from his neck to match Caduceus’ but he also had silver cufflinks on his wrists and his eyes were as black as the night sky, with pupils hidden from Roman’s sight. He also had on gloves that dipped to reveal the back of his hands where Roman could see the hint of a tattoo.
He motions for Roman to continue and the prince continues,” there was an incident at the castle that left Wraith unable to perform his duty, however despite his injuries, he tracked Prince Logan down and now is rendered completely out of commission for the time being. He sent me here with instructions to ask for your assistance with the situation.”
His words are met with silence for a moment before Caduceus stands and strides to the coat rack that Roman had just noticed is by the door. His partner sighs and literally flickers in and out of sight over to the rack to grab the cloak hanging next to Caduceus’ long coat. Roman attributes it to the strain of staring at them through a brooch for so long. He hurries to catch up and lowers the brooch to replace it on the cloak and lift his hood up.
“Lead us, warm blood” he hears from his left.
Roman pauses as a voice chuckles from his other side and he shivers before heading down the staircase that he had entered through. He sees the little girl giggle as she opens the door before Roman can knock the code and scrunch her shoulders up as if someone was ruffling her hair. There was only a single patron in the bar and he was sleeping in the corner of the dining area so Roman and his invisible companions were able to sneak out rather easily. Right before he stepped into the sunny street, he’s pulled back by a pair of hands and a guard walks past as if Roman didn’t exist.
“Stay still, there’s another patrol coming.” Roman mentally questioned how it was Caduceus knew that but a hand slipping around his brooch stopped that thought before his partner mumbles,” there. That should make this a bit easier. You’ll be invisible, just like us, until we get out of the gates. Hurry, the spell won’t last long.”
Roman does indeed hurry, hoping his strange companions were close by as he weaves through the crowd. He spots a patrol out of the corner of his eye and steps to the side before making his way towards the secret tunnel Virgil had told him about before he left.
However, a single green eye catches the movement of the vines swishing around a solid form and the white raven it belongs to caws before flying towards the castle. In all his infinite intelligence, Roman never noticed the increase of birds around nor the patrols knocking on all doors with a scroll that made the mothers and wives burst into tears.
Down the street, our raven flies, weaving between people and carts, before it takes an upward turn and glides over the castle wall, through one of the many windows in the most famous of all the rooms in the Lightheart palace, in the center of the connecting walls, with four paths crossing the grass, sits a giant dome with birds of all colors flying within and plants from the native lands of olde. It’s here that Logan’s father, King Lightheart, sits with his arm outstretched for the arrival of the white raven. As the talons grip tough skin, both bird and human eyes flash green.
“Thank you, Snowflake, for your impertinent information.” He writes out a note, nothing long, and ties it to the raven’s foot,” take it to the head of the Guard, go!” He tosses his arm up and launches the raven up towards the window it had come through.
“My son… my heir… my boy… I swear by the blade I wield, these demons in human forms shall pay for each touch of your skin with a thousand cuts, each tear’s cost drops of their blood.” Gnarled hands grip tight to the hilt of a worn sword pulsing with renewed energy at the prospect of an end to the years of peace. Weary feet take each step of the upturned stone pathway with practiced ease until he was looking off the balcony at the fields of soldiers training for survival on the battlefield.
“Logan Lightheart will come home.”
Heat vs Steele pt 10
It doesn’t take long for Patton to get done with Roman’s most immediate injuries and turn around,” okay, LoLo, your turn. Lower your head, please!”
He snorts and opens his wings to Patton’s horrified gasp,” Roman Bartholomew Aldabert! Look what you did!”
He winces back,” I’m… sorry?”
“Sorry? Sorry?! His wings are torn up! He can’t fly! What’s he supposed to do now? How is he going to find food?”
“Well that’s not my problem, is it? He shouldn’t have taken Logan! Speaking of, where is he, beast?”
Patton and Virgil look at each other,” is he really that dumb?”
“Apparently he is”
“Hey! What am I missing out on?”
“Roman, what’s the last thing you remember?”
“Disengaging from Patton’s dagger, why?”
“Did Patton say anything while you two were locked?” Virgil blinks at him while the prince shakes his head.
“It's fuzzy.”
Logan chuffs and taps his tail on the ground like an agitated cat. Virgil rubs his shoulder and sighs,” I’ll only say this once more. This is Logan.”
Roman blinks.
Once.
Twice.
“Pardon me, but what the fuck?”
“Look at his eyes, the white scales are the exact shape of his glasses, aren’t they?”
“Well, yeah, but that’s a coincidence.”
“He hasn’t tried to attack us after the fight.”
“And?”
“There’s two injured humans and the one that doesn’t know how to fight is fine. A regular dragon would’ve taken advantage of that. Logan, on the other hand, wouldn’t.”
He chuffs and raises his head proudly as Virgil peels off a loose bit of skin.
“That doesn’t prove anything. It's too hurt to do anything, that's it!”
Logan shakes his head and slaps a clawed foot down on Roman’s torso, effectively pinning him down.
“Hey! Let me go, foul beast!”
“Logan, please.” Patton sighs and looks up,” you two just had a nasty fight and you both need to heal.”
He snorts but removes his paw from Roman, examining the bewildered look on his face.
“My love..? Is it you?”
He snorts and Roman reaches out to lay his hand on Logan’s snout,” oh, starlight… what happened to you.”
He growls quietly and closes his eyes, blowing Roman’s shoulder length hair back with a puff of air. A tear slips out of his eye as he looks up,” what have I done..?”
Slowly, Roman’s gaze trails from Logan’s narrowed eye to the lightly bleeding scratches on his shoulders to the ripped holes in his wings,” I hurt you… I promised to never hurt you, and I broke that promise. Logan Lightheart, can you ever forgive me?”
He chuffs and pushes his snout into Roman’s palm. The human raises his head in shock,” but I thought you hated me!”
His response is a snort and Logan pulls his head away, looking up at the darkening sky for a moment. Roman follows his gaze to the red moon smiling down at them,” you were studying it the night I arrived, right?” Logan nods and spreads his wings to allow Patton to examine them, grimacing when he feels the telltale prick of a needle.
“I know, Lo, but I need to sew it closed. It'll be over soon, I promise.” He grunts and covers Virgil with his other wing as the winds pick up. Slowly, Roman seems to come to his senses and look up at the thin clouds gathering above,” I-I’ll go get some firewood. I don’t think we should go back like this.”
No one else was in a position to assist, so Logan swipes his front paw to roll the boulder off of the rope and the drawbridge falls with a loud crash.
“Thanks, Logan.” He sighs and walks out over the rotting drawbridge. Now alone with his thoughts, Roman could feel his guilt welling up again in his chest, sense the angry spirits of his ancestors berating him for his foolishness once again, and his hands quiver as he gathers twigs and fallen branches. The leaves whispered to him as they fall from their trees, the branches gossiping with the birds, and the water giggling at him like little children. He can hear Patton soothing Logan as he sews the rips closed and the pained growls gripped Roman’s heartstrings in icy claws. Rips that he caused.
His hands shake and grip the wood he had been collecting to his chest as he drags his feet back towards the crumbling castle. He finds Patton helping Virgil to the medical wing and Logan curled where he had been before. He chuffs and nudges Roman towards the doorway.
“I-I’m fine, Logan, I just need some time to heal. You too,” he lays a hand on the scaly cheek and gets a quiet rumble in response. He looks over his- no, not his- Prince Logan.
“I’ll send Pat out to check on you after this storm. You should find somewhere to shelter for the night,” his hand falls to his side and he steps back into the building,” Pat wouldn’t be happy if his hard work on your wing got ruined in the rain”
His words are followed by a soft rumble and a pressure on his shoulder,” Prince Logan, please, go find suitable shelter. We’ll be alright here.” It’s quiet for a moment before he chuffs and pulls away, curling up in an area just big enough for him with a roof of crumbling stone floors. When Roman turns around to head inside, he sees Virgil on the least moldy mattress available and Patton trying to start a fire unsuccessfully with the twigs he had collected around the ruins. Roman kneels and makes a pile of his collection before taking over the task to allow Patton to attend to Virgil once more.
It’s Virgil that breaks the silence,” the guards are going to send patrols out tomorrow morning. We need to ensure they don’t find Logan.”
“Why not? Surely his father can help-” “No, he won’t. He can’t find out about this, ever.”
“Virgil, you need to rest, the nurse said you weren’t going to be all here for a few weeks,” Patton interrupts calmly, despite his hands gripping his tunic,” just rest and allow Roman and I to take care of it.”
“Pat, I’m fine, just listen, Logan’s dad doesn’t know about this and should never find out. He’s the one that hunted the dragons to extinction. If he sees Logan…” He hisses and grasps at his shoulder where Patton had wrapped a nasty bruise from Logan’s bedframe.
“He’ll hunt his own son down.” Roman finishes for him,” but where will he go? He can’t very well fly anywhere and he’s in no condition to fight even a small common boy!” “I don’t know, but we need help.” Virgil grimaces as he sits up and drags his finger in the dust,” go here, west of the castle, and down the alley marked by the Rowdy Rook’s specialty sign. Three paces down, tap the second door on the left in a 3-6-4 pattern. It should get you in. Say you came for the Angel’s Fall. It should grant you an audience with him.” “Him? Sir Virgil, I must ask who this is, I can’t just waltz in without know-” “You can’t know yet. Go, he can help Logan.” The two glare at each other for a moment before Roman huffs and turns his head,” what’s the knock again?”
Meanwhile, through the forest and across the ocean, another prince twitches in his sleep as flashes of something enormous opens its mouth and spats blue flames at him. A scream cuts through the air and he shoots up in bed, his gaze automatically looking over at the door to his twin’s room where a big calligraphed R shimmers at him in the moonlight.
“Roman’s in trouble.”

It’s quiet for a few moments, save for Roman’s cries.
“Roman-” “I failed, Patton… I couldn’t save him. Logan’s gone, I- I don’t deserve to call myself a prince,” The dragon shifts above them as Roman chokes on his own tears, wallowing in his misery.
“I- I don’t deserve- “
*SLAP*
Silence rings out as Roman holds his red cheek and Patton lowers his shaking hand,” it’s not your fault, Roman. So stop acting like it is.”
“But-”
“Logan’s alive. He’s here, but he might not stay if we don’t get his wounds taken care of. Get up, we don’t have all day… sir.”
Roman looks at his servant, the one that had been by his side since he was a boy, and nods numbly as he gets to his feet. Patton helps him up and the dragon lifts a wing for them, gravel and stones rolling off the edge and through the holes on the leathery skin. Patton winces and gets them out and to a spot further away before setting Roman down.
Despite both of them being beaten and bruised, the dragon and prince stare at each other warily. Blue meets hazel as Patton undoes Roman’s shirt to gauge the wounds. Surprisingly, they weren’t that deep, but the burns on Roman’s bicep was blistering red, almost black at the center. Patton could see Logan visibly flinch at the bubbling skin and moves to block the burn from his sight. Tears still streamed from Roman’s eyes, but Patton couldn’t tell if it was from the pain or the thoughts plaguing his master’s mind.
It didn’t matter in that moment, but Patton didn’t notice the shadowy figure crawling over the rubble of the walls that once stood tall and proud. The figure makes its way over towards Logan, limping until the dragon lowers its head to offer them a way up. Roman’s teary eyes blur more at the sight behind Patton and he tries to alert him,” b-behind..”
“Quiet, Roman, I know the dragon is there. You don’t need to worry about it, just rest.”
“Who… is that?” Patton turns and hmphs with his hands about to tear Roman’s shirt,” Virgil! You’re supposed to be resting by the tree! What do you think you’re doing?” “Oh I don’t know, bringing my medical expertise?” Logan lowers his head where Virgil was resting with his ankle elevated on Logan’s horn. It was wrapped in strips from his tunic, which was now cropped,” there’s a kit in the medical wing to your left, Patton. Did Roman hit his head?”
“I’m pretty sure he did, it's bleeding.” Roman scoots back when the dragon lowers his head in and sniffs him,” Patton, get this thing away from me!” “Lo-” He licks Roman’s head and Patton goes silent as he mlems to get the taste out of his mouth. Roman sits in shocked silence, his head tingling and processing what just happened,” WHAT THE F-” “Prince Roman, language!”
“Pat, it LICKED me!” “I know he did, I do have eyes, Roman.” Patton rolls his eyes fondly as Roman sputters indignantly,” Apparently you didn’t taste very good.”
“Excuse you, I taste amazing! Wait-”
Virgil cackles and almost falls off of the dragon’s head as Roman’s face turns the same shade as his cloak. Even Logan is suppressing a smile and snorts a few sparks.
“That isn’t what I meant!” Roman frowns and shields himself with his arm from the shower of sparks.
Patton giggles as he cleans off Roman’s hair,” well, it seems your head is fine now. Logan apparently has magic healing powers now.”
The dragon snorts and crosses its front legs, staring at Roman pointedly.
“What do you want? It’s not like I owe you anything besides a thank you.”
Logan lowers his head and lets Virgil slide off to the ground as Patton comes back with the very out of date medical kit. The handservant gets right to work on Virgil’s newer wounds, bandaging the scrapes on his hands and rewrapping his ankle as the guard leans on the dragon’s forearm. It’s only now that Logan can see how tired Virgil was, and he growls softly in worry, nosing Virgil’s shoulder.
“I’m alright, Lo, just-” He hisses quietly at the second dose of disinfectant on his chest,” just a bit scuffed up. I’ll be fine after a nap”
The dragon clearly doesn’t believe him and removes his coat with his teeth, snuffling at his hair. He only pulls away when Virgil visibly winces and swipes his tongue across the hidden gash on the human’s hair.
“Thanks, Lo. So sanitary.” he smiles loopily and closes his eyes, drifting off,” idiot, I can’t help you if you run from me. Makes my job exponentially harder.”
The dragon snorts and lays a wing over him protectively. “Wow, a skylight!”
Logan removes his wing.

Heat Vs Steele Pt 8
Coughing wakes Patton from his restless nap and instantly, his eyes shoot over to Virgil in the bed. He shouldn’t be moving at all so why is he GETTING UP?!
Patton pushes him back down under the sheets and struggles to get a hold of the wriggly guard,” Virgil, you can’t move right now, you’re seriously hurt!”
“You’re going to be seriously hurt if you don’t let me up!” He grits his teeth and grabs Patton’s wrists to throw him off,” I need to get to Logan!”
“Prince Logan’s going to be fine. The others are already looking for him, and you need to be resting!” Patton gets up onto the bed and pins Virgil’s wrists above his head. The guard struggles under him, but can’t break free in his weakened state,” the dragon doesn’t stand a chance once Roman finds it. Let them deal with it!”
That only makes Virgil struggle harder and yank his knees up to ram into Patton’s backside. The force knocks the servant off of his balance and Virgil takes the chance to throw him off and get to his feet. He stumbles and grabs his knife from the nightstand, stuffing it down its sheath,” sorry, Patton, but Logan comes first.”
“Virgil, wait!” He chases after him but the guard, even in his weakened state, is faster and by the time Patton gets to the stables, he’s already riding out on Logan’s dark horse into the night. Patton tugs on his pony’s reins as Roman runs in and grabs the horse already tacked for him, courtesy of being a prince.
“Patton, get back to the infirmary! You’re supposed to be watching Virgil,” Roman swings up into the saddle and races off before receiving an answer, his mind focused on Logan and how scared he must be in the talons of that great beast.
Dragons were one of the most revered of the ancient beasts, said to be created from the deep magics that brought everything together in the world, they acted as guardians of the ancient times, hoarders of magics that the world could only dream of: the power to control the wildness of nature, stop death, destroy countries with a single word. The dragons held the knowledge to all of these and more, but were slain when humans feared they wouldn’t share their secrets. The deep, mystical powers of the earth were locked away after that; as with no one to direct their power, they ran rampant, winds tearing the roots of the eldest trees up, waves drowning ships in watery graves, the earth devouring towns under rock and mud.
Logan must be terrified to be held captive by a beast with such power at its disposal.
Roman growls and kicks his steed into a faster gallop, he had seen the dragon’s shadow head this way and judging by the time he had measured, it couldn’t have gone far. Roman wracked his brain, trying to think. Dragons need a lot of space to rest, and this one had a captive so it would need somewhere to… oh no.
The castle. The old rickety castle that was falling apart brick by brick. Logan could get seriously hurt if something happened during a fight there, but Roman couldn’t think of anywhere else close enough for a dragon to have seen and been able to get to by nightfall. He’d have to risk it, Logan didn’t have a lot of time if that dragon got hungry. Roman tugs on the reins to guide his horse towards the castle, the world rushing by in a blurr. The wind whistles past his ears, Roman can feel the sweat starting to stick under his helmet, the steady weight of his weapon strapped to his hip, the beat of his heart pounding for his one and only. Logan had to love him after this, right? I mean, how can he not? Roman was risking his life for him, fighting a danger greater than either of them have ever seen, and carrying him home. He was rescuing him from the grips of something catastrophic, defeating his nightmare and proving himself as a worthy partner, king, ruler. Lover. When did Logan become so important to him that he was willing to risk his life for a chance of his love being reciprocated? When did that challenging sparkle in his eye become the sole reason he lived? Is this what his father talked about years ago with both of his sons? Is this what he meant when he said that someone would make him feel different than anyone else? Is this what Remus teased him about before Roman left to earn Logan’s hand?
“C’mon, Robro! At least let me come help!”
Gods, what Roman wouldn’t do for Remus’ help in this fight.
He pulls the reins back as the castle comes into view and stops his horse, looking up at the closed drawbridge. Annoying.
He hops down and ties his mare to a tree to let her rest, approaching the deep black waters surrounding the stone walls that tower over his head. Luckily for him, the water had drained over the last few days since his initial visit so he was able to hop across the stones barely visible on top of the water. His eyes search the walls for the vines that had been growing and went up to the battlements. They seemed sturdy enough to hold his weight. He tested it before nodding and starting to climb up right as Virgil’s steed breaks into the clearing.
The guard curses and ties Logan’s horse up with the quickest knot he could manage before he stumbles to the edge of the moat,” shit-”
He put a hand to his chest where he could feel his bandages soaking with the blood oozing from his wound. Logan, Logan was more important right now. He had to get to Logan, warn him about Roman-
Virgil stifles a gasp of pain as he’s dragged back by someone on his leg. He turns over and sees a tearful Patton holding his calf,” Virgil, stop! You’re in no shape to fight a dragon!”
“P-”
“You need to rest! Badly! Can you not feel your pain, your wounds? You were struck across the chest and crushed under the bedframe! I-I’ll fight for you, but you need to rest!”
“Patton, that’s-”
“Quiet! I-I won’t let you go into this fight! You won’t survive.” He pulls him back and winces at Virgil’s pained breath,” you’ll get shredded in there! Let Roman take care of this for once!”
“Roman’s the problem, Patton!”
“No, he’s going to rescue Logan, he swore he would on his honor. Trust him!”
“HE’LL END UP KILLING HIM, PATTON. Logan’s-” he’s cut off by a wheezy breath as Patton pushes him down to the ground to change his bandages,” he’s-”
“In the southern tower? We know, Virgil, Roman’s got this handled, trust me. If anyone can save Logan, it’s Roman.”
“NO, Patton, he’s tHE” He takes a breath and hisses at the disinfectant pressed against his scratch marks, “He’s the dragon, Patton! Logan’s the fucking dragon!”
“Language!” Patton frowns but lets up on the cleaner,” what do you mean he’s the-”
A roar sounds out and flames blast from behind the stone walls, frying the vines to a crisp as the dark blue dragon raises its head and beats it’s powerful wings.
“That- That’s Logan. There isn’t time, Patton, you have to stop Roman from killing him! I saw the look in his eye before I passed out, he’s furious. Please, Patton, you have to help Logan, please I beg-”
“I got this, Virgil, don’t worry, but you need attention too, look at yourself.”
“Patton, I’m not the main focus right now, I’ll be fine, but Logan won’t unless you get in there and save his ass.”
Blue flames burst from above the castle walls again as an angry roar pierces the air and the drawbridge crashes to the ground, the chains snapped. Virgil shoves Patton away and coughs,” go!”
Patton hardens his gaze and nods, rushing into the castle through the now broken drawbridge. The scene inside was straight out of an oil painting: Roman had his sword drawn and raised against a blue dragon backed into a wall. Patton could see ruby blood dripping from slashes in its wings and the superficial wounds Roman’s sword had inflicted.
On the other hand, Roman looked relatively unharmed other than the bruises on his limbs and the burns on his armor. There was blood trickling down over his left eye from his hairline, and his helmet was dented, but he seemed okay.
“Release the prince, foul beast, and I’ll make your end a quick one!” His bloody blade jabs at the dragon, who raises its foot out of range and steps back, twisting its ears back.
Patton found that he couldn’t move as the dragon huffs smoke from its nostrils and hisses angrily at Roman.
“So be it, then. Perish!”
“ROMAN, NO-“
The blade comes crashing down on Patton’s small dagger and the prince scowls,” What are you doing?!”
“You can’t kill it, Roman, you can’t!” Tears spring to the servant’s eyes and he turns them to Roman’s furious ones.
“This isn’t the time for your empathetic nonsense, Patton! I have to defeat it to save Logan!” He shoves his servant aside and jabs his blade at the dragon once more, but finds nothing but open air. He growls and looks around until he spots the beast climbing the southern tower. He pulls out his slingshot with the sharpened stones Remus had given him before he had left. You know, just in case. He aims and fires straight into the dragon’s eye. It screams out and flaps its damaged wings as it crashes to the ground, it’s tail smashing into the base of the southern tower. Where Logan was hidden away.
He tosses his sword aside and charges for it, taking the stairs three at a time to reach the top room where he knew his love was hiding. The door! He reaches for the handle and throws it open,” Logan!”
All he found was a change of clothes bundled on the floor with blue scales scattered around,” Logan?!”
The foundation rocks as Roman tears the room apart,” Logan, where are you?!”
“Roman, you have to come down, the tower’s collapsing!”
“Not without Logan! He has to be here, it’s the only place!” The prince yelps as a beam falls from the rafters and barely misses him. He stumbles back to avoid the falling debris but when he turns to run, he finds that the doorway was blocked. He was trapped. Tears spring to his eyes; he can’t die yet! He still has to save Logan and marry him just like in the stories his mother read to him! He still needs to help Patton find hi true love and go home! Remus would kill him if he died before seeing his wedding! He still needs his happily ever after!
His fingers ache as he flings the old window open on rusty hinges. One of the panels flies off and lands somewhere nearby,” Patton, the door’s blocked!”
The servant wipes away his frightened tears and looks at the dragon. Could Virgil be right? He had to trust he was, or this wouldn’t work.
“Roman, you’ll need to jump!” He calls up to Roman then shoves himself against the dragon’s chest,” c’mon, buddy, I need you to move!”
“Patton, I’ll DIE”
“Trust me!” He pushes against the dragon’s side again and mentally cheers when he moves on his own.
Logan looks up and shifts over with Patton’s gentle encouragement,” you’re doing great, Logan honey. Just a little more, ok?”
He drops to the ground and sighs weakly, his wings coming to cover his wounded sides. He could feel Patton gently moving his closed eyelid to examine the eye that had been shot and his ear swivels forward when the servant hisses softly in sympathy. Patton looks up when he notices Roman hadn’t moved, “ROMAN, JUMP”
The prince finds his body obeying without his permission and Roman did not scream like a little girl as he fell through the air. The air’s forced out of his lungs when he lands on something firm but squishy and Roman sees spots in his vision in the second he has to recover before another force rams into him.
Nimble fingers undo his armor straps and a sigh of relief escapes him as the weight falls from his shoulders. He gasps when the ground shifts underneath him, rising and falling in a pattern that he vaguely recognizes as breathing. His body burns as he gets to his feet and he can barely hear Patton talking, but he can’t make out the words.
“- eak out, okay?”
“Wha, Pat, why’s the floor movING-!” He yelps and grabs onto Patton as the ‘floor’ yanks out from under them and the actual ground meets Roman’s back. Logan rolls over them and tucks his head underneath with his eyes closed. Patton whimpers as heavy debris crashes down outside their shelter and grips Roman tightly.
Roman chokes back a sob as he listens to the chaos. He failed… He failed to save Logan, and now he’s lost forever among the debris of the old castle. He might be able to bring his body back to Elmari, but he’ll never be able to bring back the boy that had stolen his heart while doing everything to push it away. He wipes the burning tears from his eyes, cursing the ones that replace them almost instantly. He lets Patton pull him into his chest and rub his back, breaking down into his servant’s shoulder.
Hi, I’m just here to make sure you are ok. You haven’t been active for a while and I don’t want to be too intrusive, but I would like to know if you’re alive because I am concerned
Yeah, I’m fine! College is kicking my ass atm, so I haven’t been able to sit down and write for a hot minute 😅 but I’m alright. Thanks for the concern though <3

Logan’s vision was blurry as he soared across the sky with his clothes in his talons. He knew the people could see him, but the only thoughts in his mind were escape and hide. And there was one place he had been told could protect him for years if need be, with walls strong enough to hold an army back and a moat deep enough that it was dangerous to swim lest sharks nibble your toes. He glides down to the old family castle and stashes his clothes in the southern tower in case he changes back -he didn’t think he would, but he didn’t exactly want to return home naked if he did- then pulled the drawgate up with his teeth. He locks it with a boulder he found, setting it on the ropes, and curls up to rest his newly grown, sore wings.
His glasses had shattered in the transformation and he feared he may have seriously hurt Virgil despite his attempts to avoid the now tiny human. He remembered his vision becoming much more narrow and spitting flames at the wall as his bones shifted and grew, breaking and reshaping themselves under the muscles and scales he was growing. His horns had gotten stuck in the roof and in the process of getting them free, had whipped his tail directly into the human still in the room, sending him flying into the four poster bed. He remembered hearing footsteps and crashing through the window and wall to escape. He had immediately headed for the only safe place he knew he could go to in this form, his family’s old home.
He chuffs and smoke billows from his nostrils as he kept his eyes locked on the drawbridge. As the sun set, he felt them droop, until he was softly snoring in the courtyard with his tail over his snout.
Roman didn’t sleep that night, standing on his balcony with the blue fabric in his hand. He was running his fingers over the smooth silk as he looked over the Elmarian landscape. His expression is neutral and thoughtful as he listens to the silence. Usually, Patton would be asleep and snoring by now, but his servant was currently in the medical wing watching over Virgil. He remembered how he had run in and immediately positioned himself by Virgil’s bedside, rubbing the back of the unconscious guard’s hand. He wondered, would Logan do that for him if he was injured in his pursuit of this beast? Would he watch over him as he healed, hold his hand, and say sweet things to make him feel marginally better?
He doubted it; -his fingers close around the royal blue cloth- Logan wasn’t like that. He was colder, more defensive, and passionate about the sciences. But he was the one Roman had devoted his attention to for the time being. The object of his affections, although they didn’t seem to have an effect on him. Perhaps words weren’t the way to his prince’s heart, nor great deeds. Perhaps he was like Roman’s brother, and the way to gain his attention was through spending quality time with him. Remus had always seemed happier when Roman came with him on those strange quests he went on to tame wild beasts and gather flora for his should-be-illegal-but-not-quite-illegal garden. Roman’s still not sure how he still has it after a plant nearly took his head off, but he does and Roman has stayed as far from it as possible.
But his point, perhaps Logan does not see the value in great deeds or sweet words like most royalty. Perhaps instead he values time and the people he spends it with, it would explain the bond with the guard that’s constantly at his side.
The prince shakes his head and turns to face the room he had been staying in, looking over the decor. There was a painting of one of Logan’s ancestors fighting a great fire breathing beast hanging on the wall opposite the bed. Roman examines it for a moment, scoffs, then turns to the light armor he had worn on his way here that was currently on a stand to prevent rust. It was just a metal chestplate, leather wraps for his forearms and thighs, and the helmet he had refused to wear unless they were engaged in battle. He turns to the rising crescent moon streaming light into his eyes and secures the first leather strap of his chestplate on.

Logan rushes to his room as fast as he possibly could with Virgil following close behind. A servant leads Roman and Patton to their quarters to wash and prepare for supper and Roman catches Logan’s door closing by a certain watchful guard. He furrows his brow in thought and waves the bowing servant away to speak privately with Patton.
“I see someone’s quite smitten with Logan!” Roman turns to glare at those shining blue eyes.
“Patton Elseheart! How inappropriate of you to assume my emotions towards the prince.”
“But it’s why you chose me to be your servant! Now spill, how do you think this is gonna end?”
“With me winning his heart, of course! How else can it end with my charming looks and attentions?” He smirks and winks at Patton playfully, causing the servant to burst into happy giggles.
“No one can doubt those! But Logan doesn’t seem affected by them, RoRo. How do you know it’s working?” He tilts his head and the prince chuckles, his eyes cast towards the window,” because they have to.”
Meanwhile, Logan’s frantically trying to rip his leggings off, scratching at the scales growing under his skin. Virgil locks the door and hurries to help him, grabbing the rag and broom. He kneels, gently grabbing one of his squirming legs and starts to rub the dead skin off of his thigh.
Immediately, Logan’s movement ceases and he relaxes under the warm cloth. The scales glimmer in the soft light as Virgil scrubs the skin between the knee and hip off. Once the first thigh is done, he switches to his other one, smacking Logan’s hand away from where it had been scratching at his hips. They stand there silently, one watching the other work until the new scales were all uncovered and shining in the candlelight. Logan redresses himself in dinner clothes as Virgil sweeps the dead skin up and washes the rag.
“I’m glad you accepted the position, Virgil, I’m not sure I could handle the pity my previous servants held for my… condition.”
The guard looks up at him in confusion,” what brought this up, Lo? You’re usually pretty reserved with your gratitude.”
“You didn’t have to accept the position as my personal guard. You could have left easily with your skills.”
“Yeah, but I was offered a steady pay so why would I, a child of fourteen, reject that?!”
He chuckles,” you had a life.”
“Not much of one. Plus clothes that fit? Food every night? Shelter? Protection? Hell yeah, I was accepting it.” Virgil rolls his eyes and straps his belt on under his cloak, lifting the hood,” supper?”
“Supper.”
The two stroll down the hall and Logan’s eyes trail to the door separating him from-
“Hey, lover boy, eyes up front.” A tug on his sleeve pulls him away from his path and he stumbles away from the pillar he had been about to walk into,” seriously, man, I’m supposed to protect you from any threats and you’re not making it any easier by walking into them!”
He shakes his head to rid it of any thoughts of Roman as he walks with Virgil. He’s only half listening to the world as his mind drifts back to the questions swirling around.
Why was Roman so intent on winning him over? Hadn’t he heard of Logan’s track record?
Why did he ask that strange question in the forest? What animal he would be, it’s ridiculous.
If he’d known about the castle, did that mean he also knew of the curse? If so, did he know that Logan bore it?
He chews his lip until a copper taste distracts him and he realizes he had nipped it on accident. Logan sighs and walks through the doors two guards held open for him into the dining hall. He took his seat at his father’s right hand as Virgil stood guard behind him, eyes scanning the room for anything unusual. Roman and Patton enter next and take their respective seats before the rest of the staff comes and takes the seats below their platform. Nobles file in on the balconies with their families, the daughters giggling when they see Logan and Roman.
Logan merely watches everyone eat and converse, answering Roman’s questions with very brief, closing answers. He was thinking, clearly, and Roman just didn’t seem to catch on that Logan preferred quiet dinners, talking amiably about anything and everything. Even so, he still jumped when Roman laid a hand on his thigh and looked at him for an answer to a question that Logan hadn’t heard.
“I’m afraid I didn’t quite catch that, Prince Roman, would you repeat what you said?”
“I asked if you would like to spend some time in the library with me, my dear. Our servants would be with us, if it would make you feel better over it, and I could tell you legends from my land, tales spun by generations of storytellers for a mere pint of ale, stories of dragon slayings and hearts won by heroes of great deeds!”
Logan freezes and contemplates,” perhaps, as long as we are finished by moonhigh, I don’t mind.”
Roman beams and shimmies excitedly in his seat for the rest of the meal, sharing polite conversation with Logan’s father as well as trying to get a word from silent, steadfast Virgil. The servants’ tables and balconies clear and soon Logan and Virgil depart to prepare for the night.
Logan’s father is amiable, and clearly willing to entertain Roman’s tales and input his opinion where it doesn’t belong. However, Roman can’t seem to mind it too much, as his words were always carefully chosen and he made points good enough to rival his son’s.Patton joins him a while later, and reminds him of the date long after the candles had melted low enough for replacement.
“Oh dear, I seem to have lost track of time! Logan must have been waiting for hours! I must depart, but I thank you for tolerating my passionate ramblings, your highness. Perhaps we can pick this up at a later time?”
He bows his head,” it is I who must thank you, Roman, for putting up with my old thoughts. It is not often I get to share my opinions outside of the meeting room.”
Roman tenses and awkwardly bows before Patton pulls him out,” Roman, you know Logan doesn’t like waiting! Now you have even less of a chance than you did before!”
He chuckles at his servant’s chiding and allows the younger to clean him off, despite knowing how to himself. Patton flits about and scolds Roman until finally, the prince ruffles his hair, reminding his servant who was taller, in a higher position, and older,” I appreciate the concern, Patty, but I’ll be fine! Trust me, when have I ever been wrong?”
Patton makes sure no one’s around before setting his fists on his hips,” do you want me to count?”
“Okay, I get it, but those are in the past! This is the present, and I can’t be wrong about it. Logan will love me, I swear on it!”
He sighs and shakes his head fondly before Roman leads him to the library. Patton is silent during the trek and suddenly pulls Roman aside when the ground rumbles and a soul-scarring roar echoes through the halls. Servants and civilians scream as a giant shadow covers the cowering crowd. He wrenches free from Patton and runs towards Logan’s quarters, his terrified servant following close behind. He loses his breath when he sees the lock is broken and Logan’s things strewn about on the floor. Strange black marks covered groups of bricks along with long scratch marks and holes in the ceiling above. He looks around at the torn, blood red curtains and sheets, the books all over the floor, inkwells spilling across the wooden planks, glass windows broken as if something huge had gotten in and-
Patton screams and Roman’s attention shifts to the prone figure previously hidden by the fallen bed curtains. His face pales when he sees a familiar blue piece of fabric clenched in his fist and he searches everywhere in sight for the owner.

“My dearest, how much longer must we ride? I feel as though it has been hours!”
“Prince Roman, it’s been five minutes. Surely you can wait another twenty five?” Logan sighs through his nose and pinches the bridge, closing his eyes to the blurry world he lived in.
The aforementioned prince groans and presses his hand to his forehead dramatically,” how can you expect me to wait any longer? How cruel you must be to expect such from me!”
“I assure you, it’s possible.” He lightly taps his mare’s sides with his heels and she picks up the pace a bit. He hears the others do the same and Roman rides up beside him,” perhaps you could make this ride a little more bearable, my dear?”
“And how would you expect me to do so?”
Logan almost instantly regrets it as that familiar itch rides down his thigh.
“Tell me of yourself! You’ve never spoken of your childhood or passions, I wish to know my husband the best I can before I marry him!”
“We are not and will not be engaged. Please dismiss the thought from your mind.” He absentmindedly scratches at the cloth covering his itchy skin and he can sense Virgil’s eyes bore into his head.
“Then at least allow me to know of your passions and interests!” And Logan couldn’t resist the earnest in those hazel orbs.
“Very well, as you should remember from yesterday, I am very much interested in the sky and how it operates. I wonder where the stars go during the day, if they are simply covered by the sun’s brilliance or if they move to the world’s other half. Why does the moon change during the month? Are females somehow connected to it and that’s why they suffer? If that’s so, then are males connected to the sun or something else? It’s curious, and so am I.”
Roman’s silent, which Logan had taken to assume he was satisfied with the response and continues riding silently, until he asks another question.
“What have you discovered?”
The corners of his mouth twitch -and if that didn’t make Roman’s heart flutter, that was his business- and Logan speaks again,” I believe there are four night skies that we see during the year. One for the cold season, warm season, and the two in between. Groups and patterns previously discovered such as Orion will not appear until their respective seasons and I have measured each sky’s duration as approximately three months apiece with a few days shifting between. Phenomenons such as blood moons and the moon covering the sun are much more difficult to track, but I believe they also have a pattern.”
He can hear Virgil whispering quietly to Patton behind them and by the giggle that replied, he supposed they were discussing something of minor amusement. Virgil grins,” why don’t you tell him about the other projects you’ve been working on?”
“Sir Virgil, I believe there he possesses no interest in my projects. They are merely for self satisfaction.”
“Tell me anyway, my dear, I’ll always lend an ear to you.”
Logan opens his mouth to reply but closes it again,” what about you? You haven’t mentioned anything you’re interested in.”
Roman’s eye twinkles,” we can talk about me tonight after supper. Today is for you, my darling.”
“Forgive my disbelief, but someone as proud as yourself should wish to speak highly of himself.”
Roman laughs out loud and reaches to take Logan’s hand,” I only wish to learn about you, my love. I will share about myself tonight, on my word as crown prince.”
Logan nods,” very well. If you must know, I am interested in the sciences, although I am sure you could see that by now. Astrology is my main subject, however I also dabble in alchemy and politics. Though, the latter is more of a difficult practice than a subject.”
“I care to disagree, my dear, politics are quite simple once you understand how to persuade others to your side.”
“Oh? So you’ve had practice?”
“Well, not with others of my level. I’ve only had to ever use it in meetings over my people’s care.” Roman holds himself back from holding onto Logan’s hand when the silver-clad prince takes his hand back to guide his horse around a rock in the middle of the path.
The rest of the ride is silent with the two princes in front and the gossiping guard and servant behind them. Logan scratches at his thigh, feeling the hardened scales forming under his skin, as Roman squeals in excitement. He lifts his eyes to look up at the ruined castle before them and clicks his tongue to urge his horse forward into the yard.
They all dismount and tie their horses to a fallen tree before Roman speedwalks to the gates. Logan follows at a much calmer pace and glances at the only steady tower left from the original building before Virgil bumps into his shoulder, bringing him back to see Roman looking up at the ruined castle.
“Generations were raised in this castle, including you, right Logan?”
He stiffened uncomfortably but nods,” that is correct. I was raised here until I turned four and the current castle was completed.”
“So you don’t remember it in its prime…” Logan looks up at Roman’s devastated expression and feels his chest squeeze.
“Perhaps, I could metaphorically paint an image for you? I remember a little of what it was like before we moved,” at an eager nod from Roman, Logan continued,” well, the area we are currently standing in was the garden. Flowers bloomed along the castle walls and guards were positioned at either side of the gate, four in total. If we walk through, this area was the courtyard and my mother had gardens in each corner. The stables were over to your right -you can still see the well we drew water from to its left- and over to your left was the entrance to the sparring arena. Straight ahead are the main doors, the knockers were taken along when we moved.”
The group explores around with Virgil keeping the foreigners away from more dangerous areas. Logan gently sets a hand on Roman’s shoulder to stop him from walking in,” it’s dangerous inside. The walls are unsteady from lack of care and pieces have already fallen. The last remaining structure that’s safe to enter is the southern tower behind us. The foundation was set on rock for the tower so as the rest of the castle is crumbling, the tower will remain the last line of defense. It was deemed the most appropriate location for a last stand should it ever come to it and so was given the sturdiest foundation as well as the strongest defense and a storage unit for everything that would be needed to survive for months. Even now, it’s stocked with a garden and enough food for the family to survive for three months on it.”
“That’s incredible, Logan, but isn’t it dangerous to reveal that information to me? What if I decide to attack your country and force your hand in marriage?”
“Roman, it’s not dangerous at all. You wouldn’t stand a chance if you attacked us.” Logan smirks in amusement and steers Roman back towards the gate,” besides, you’re too softhearted to do that. One look at your relationship with Patton tells me that.”
Both of the aforementioned boys flush red and Logan is pleased to see Roman is silent for a moment,” do you believe that Patton and I are engaged romantically?”
Logan swings up onto his horse and looks down at Roman,” admittedly, it has crossed my mind. However, I do not believe it is romantic, more so a sibling relationship. You are the older brother looking out for younger Patton. Come, I will not wait long.”
Roman blinks and helps Patton before getting up onto his own, the small group traveling back down the overgrown trail. Logan leading everyone, Roman just behind him, Patton following, and Virgil in the back, keeping an eye on everyone. The birds chirp pleasantly around them, sunlight dappling through Logan’s hair and causing Roman’s heart to flip every time he sees the dark chestnut shining against the viridian forest around them.
“If you were an animal, what would you be?” Roman can see that Logan’s shoulders tense up at the sudden question before relaxing and he grins. Seems Specs can be startled!
“A human.”
“Aw, c’mon, mi amour, please?”
“I suppose you won’t quit until you get an answer and I certainly do not wish to repeat this morning’s venture. Very well, I believe I would be a raven.”
“A raven! Do elaborate, my dear.”
Logan sighs and rolls his eyes,” the bird is known in my land as one of the most intelligent of the wild animals. They have been heard repeating common phrases such as ‘how are you’ and greetings at appropriate times in conversation. Additionally, if one of their favored humans drop something important, the bird has been seen returning it. They mimic noises to draw attention to a dead carcass so that the predator will open it for them as well as have a mutually beneficial relationship with wolves.” Logan’s eyes flicker back to Virgil who was still watching over them with a sharp eye.
“I see. That’s very observant of you, mi estrella.”
“Did you just call me ‘your star’?”
“…perhaps.”
Logan’s other thigh starts itching.

“I have aquired flowers to apologize for my actions in the library. I hope you accept these as a token of my affections and deepest apologies.” Bluebells were lifted above Roman’s head as the prince kneels at Logan’s feet,” I noticed you seem to like blue, so I went to find the bluest flowers I could pick for you!”
“Roman, -Virgil stop growling at him- I accept your apology, however I ask that you give these to maidens in the town as I am mildly allergic to their pollen.” Logan gently pushes down the flowers and watches Roman lift his head, locking eyes with him.
The prince grins and nods eagerly,” of course! I will return to your side as quickly as I can, mi amour!”
Logan nods,” then you are free to go.”
Roman races off with the flowers, practically skipping, and Logan chuckles in light amusement.
“You never told me you were allergic to bluebells.” Virgil looks up at him suspiciously and Logan shrugs.
“I must have developed it rather recently then.”
Virgil laughs and shakes his head,” if you wanted him gone, you could’ve just said so. No need to get his hopes up with this.”
“Now, I never said that I wanted him to leave quite yet. I’m rather starting to enjoy this game of chess he’s started. He’s not entirely bad at it either, quite the opponent.”
“Logan, was that your way of saying you’re interested?” Virgil stifles a chuckle as the prince sputters in indignation.
“Absolutely not! What ever gave you that idea?!”
“Okay, Logan, calm down. I was just teasing! Let’s go see your father, I believe he’s looking for you.”
Logan’s fire calms down and he leads Virgil away to the throne room, his guard jabbing at the metaphorical buttons that he knew Logan would react to. The guards allowed them through the doors and Logan kneels at the King’s feet,” yes, father, what did you need me for?”
“Logan, I can see that this is taking much too long. Tell me, how much do you know about Prince Roman?”
Logan narrows his eyes suspiciously,” not much, admittedly, except that he’s a major flirt.”
‘And a massive thorn in my side’
“Ah, so I was correct. We will need to speed this courting up so I will be hosting a kingdom-wide ball for you two. The nobles and fellow royalty will be attending so you’ll be attending to their children.”
“Must I, father? You know how I hate their ideas of small talk.”
“Yes, Logan, and you will be wearing the suit that the tailor makes. I’m thinking red on white with a black embellishment.” He looks Logan over and holds his hand up to silence his protests,” I’ve been lenient enough with you, this ball is a chance for you to build relations with the other kingdoms despite your current hold over them all. Yes, they currently owe Elmaria a debt from the winter, but that could change with a flip of Fate’s coin. Your best bet is to build strong relations with other countries so you have aid if the kingdom needs it.” No
“I understand, but as you know, I am inadequate when it comes to social situations. I am severely behind the others when it comes to the social aspect of ruling.” Logan stands and brushes himself off.
“That’s why I allowed Roman to court you. For where you are weak, he is strong. He is incredible at social events and loves the spotlight whereas you tend to be more of a background, technical character. The matchup is perfect!”
“Father, he is also quite annoying. He has not left my side since last night and is most likely waiting outside this room for me.”
“So you feel because of him?” The king smirks and Logan quickly corrects himself.
“I never said that. He merely makes it difficult to accomplish my allotted duties and I don’t appreciate it.”
“Alright, whatever you say, son. You’re dismissed.”
Logan bows once more and walks back before leaving the room, the oaken doors closing behind him. The king smiles softly and shakes his head,” that boy…”
Logan sighs softly once the doors shut behind him and looks up at the prince standing there waiting for him,” Roman, I see you’ve returned.”
“I could not keep myself from your side for much longer, my dear. Come, allow me to make up for the loss of time.” He takes Logan’s hand and barely manages to press a kiss to the back of it before it’s ripped from his grasp. Logan holds it behind his back and sighs through his nose,” I suppose we should make it seem like we tolerate each other’s presence. Where would you like to go? We have the gardens, the castle, the forest, plains, and-”
“Mi amour, I only wish to stay by your side.” Roman smiles tenderly at him and Logan rolls his eyes.
”Alright, I get it,” Roman chuckles,” how about we go horseback riding in the forest? Perhaps we will stumble upon an adventure and fall in love along the journey!”
“The likelihood of that occurring is too low to consider, but fine. We will go horseback riding and plan something else for this afternoon.” Logan walks with Roman back to the guest’s suite and bids him farewell for the moment before returning to his chambers.
“How’d it go with princey?”
Logan jumps at the voice behind him before relaxing,” Virgil, why do you insist on scaring me every time I enter this room? Anyway, it went alright. He apologized and insisted we go horseback riding in the forest. You-”
“Will be coming along,” Virgil gives him a look of respected hostility and Logan chuckles a breathy laugh.
“Of course, I would not be able to attend without you at my side.” He stands still as Virgil unties the ribbons and removes his corset to allow Logan to breathe. His servant rushes around to gather his riding clothes as Logan undresses himself and lays out his previous outfit on the bed. Virgil returns to his side and helps dress the prince for his ride in a white tunic, tan riding pants, a blue vest and a generic brown cloak. Logan sits and starts tying his boots as Virgil switches his own outfit out for a dark aesthetic and a black mask that covers his lower face.
“Virgil, I don’t really think this is necessary. You’ll overheat and we’ll have to return early.”
The guard thinks for a moment and takes off his dark coat.
“I assume that’s the best answer I’ll receive. Come, let’s collect Roman.” Logan leads Virgil out the door and down the hall a bit to the guest suites where Roman was waiting for them outside his room with Patton by his side. They exchange cordial greetings and Roman kisses Logan’s hand again before the (barely) taller of the two leads them all to the stables, his answers to Roman’s prodding statements quick and to the point.
“My dear, where are we going?”
“Simply down a path my family enjoys taking when we need a moment to think. It’s nothing special, really. Why do you ask?”
“I was wondering if it was necessary for our servants to come along. I was originally going to have Patton remain behind but asked him to come along when I saw yours coming.” Logan notices his eyes flick nervously to Virgil, who’s listening to Patton, but clearly keeping an eye on the two royals.
“Virgil’s presence is always required when I leave the castle, however Patton’s is not if you wish to allow him to remain behind.”
Roman looks back at the servant and quietly asks what he’d like to do. Virgil and Roman switch places unintentionally and the guard looks up at his charge,” what’s our pathing for this ride?”
“Just a quick trot down the normal path -you should know it well enough by now- and we’ll turn around before we reach the old castle. The first one that the royal family built after staking their claim on the land.”
Virgil nods and is silent for a moment,” you aren’t afraid he’ll find, you know, your place?”
“Virgil, how likely is it that you’re going to allow us anywhere near those old ruins? We’ll be perfectly safe and he won’t see anything of importance. Besides, it’s in the tower and he’ll clearly see that it’s unsafe to proceed across the drawbridge.”
“Drawbridge? My love, are we going to see your country’s first castle?!” Roman beams and looks at Logan with hopeful, bright eyes.
“Yes, you know of it?” He looks over at the other in curiosity,” I was not aware others knew of it.”
“Of course I know of it! I studied your country’s history so I could have something to discuss with you if we needed a topic. Besides, it’s such a rich, passionate history, it was more like reading a fairytale! The castle was known as the world’s most impenetrable fortress as every attack was absorbed and returned tenfold by the ballistas and archers hidden behind the trapdoors that protected them from any incoming fire. The moat used to be filled with seawater and your ancestors made a pact with the merpeople that allowed them to swim in the moat to defend against any foot soldiers in exchange for land materials they wouldn’t otherwise be able to access. It’s said that one day the child of the Lightheart family will return and bring forth a power hidden inside its walls so powerful, it can raze an entire country!”
Logan and Virgil share a worried glance before turning their attention back to Roman,” I see you’ve done your research. Yes, we are visiting that very castle, however we will not be able to cross the moat. The drawbridge is raised and it isn’t safe to cross the waters after the merpeople went back to the sea.”
“I see, then we must at least explore the surrounding land! Perhaps there are secret passageways leading to the interior that were never discovered!” Roman tugs Logan along down the hall faster and their servants had to run to keep up.

Logan’s hand went to his circlet to ensure it remained where it was and trips over his own feet trying to keep up with the enthusiastic prince. They slow down once they reach the stables and a stable hand brings the two horses out to the princes while another brings two others for Virgil and Patton. Logan’s was black and had a crescent moon between her eyes while Roman’s was pure white. Virgil’s dapple grey mare nips at Patton’s crème steed. Each rider takes the reins of their mount and swings up into the saddle. Roman practically bouncing in the saddle at the prospect of their destination. Logan ensures everyone is situated before clicking his tongue and riding out the gates with his small group behind him.

Logan doesn’t see the other prince until later in the morning when he’s found marveling over the extensive library that Logan’s ancestors had built years before he was even conceived.
“Your father said I might find you here, Logan. I wasn’t expecting it to be the other way around” The tanned boy sends a bright smile over to him, which Logan promptly ignores. Instead, he goes over to a shelf to examine the books for a suitable title.
Roman pouts at the lack of reaction and comes up behind him, leaning over his shoulder a bit to peek at the book’s title. Logan turns and jumps back against the shelf in surprise, eyes wide and locked on Roman, his book clutched to his chest.
“Sorry! Sorry, I was just curious about what you chose!” Roman puts his hands up and backs off. Strange…
Logan merely retreats to the couch and sits down, opening his book to start reading. He can hear Roman sit next to him and try engaging him in conversation numerous times, but his only response are one word or quick answers. He manages to get to the rising action before Roman stops talking altogether. It isn’t long until a sly hand slides up his chest to his chin and gently tilts his head to face endearing, brown eyes, Roman’s free hand sneaking a bookmark in and snatching his book.
“Roman, I would appreciate if you gave that back.”
“But then I wouldn’t have these lovely star-filled galaxies looking at me,” Logan feels his heart skip a beat, but hides any indication.
“Won’t you forgive the intrusion this morning? I’m only here to make you happy!” Roman smiles softly and Logan finds himself wanting to freeze time for a moment longer before he remembered what he was supposed to be doing.
“Mi amour, you’ve entranced my heart with your whole being. Tell me, what can I do to prove myself worthy of your affections?” Roman leans closer to him, barely taking Logan’s hand as the one on his chin moves to his cheek.
“You can leave me alone!” Logan shoves him off and flees to his room, scratching at the itch on his covered arms. Servants dodge out of his way when they see his expression and the guards don’t try to stop him, despite their orders to keep the two together. He locks the door behind him and shouts for Virgil as he rips his shirt off as fast as he could, scratching at the scales growing on his shoulders and back. He’s soon relieved by a cold, wet cloth gently rubbing at them and he lowers his arms.
“Something got you riled up. Was it that prince? I bet it was.” He can practically hear the grin Virgil was surely portraying as he rolls his eyes.
“He attempted to kiss me.”
“Already? He should know that courting law states that PDA is forbidden.”
“We were alone, Virgil. In the library.”
“Oo! He’s got taste!” “Sir Virgil!” Logan tries to twist and look at him but the cloth pressing against his neck prevents any harsh words.
“I knighted you, and I can take it back!” he shivers, despite his words as the cloth trails down his back.
“But you won’t~” Virgil sing-songs and rubs at the newer scales,” you’ve mentioned that you don’t want anyone else hearing about your ailment and it definitely helps that I was there when it was inflicted, so just relax and let me help you.”
Logan grumbles but allows Virgil to continue rubbing his dead skin off of his -no, the- scales so it was less uncomfortable on the prince. He sighs in relief and Virgil chuckles,” do you want me to redo your chest and upper arms?”
“If you don’t mind. I believe some dust might have gotten under one and it’s quite noticeable.”
“Yeah, okay, Dictionary. I gotcha.” Logan rolls his eyes at Virgil’s nickname and turns around so he can work on Logan’s chest. They sit in silence as Virgil works, watching pieces of dead skin fall off the deep blue scales.
“Look, Lo, I know you aren’t having the best of times dealing with this, but at least they’re a pretty color, right?”
“Yes, they’re aesthetically pleasing, I suppose.” He sighs and looks away towards the window. He could see the forest spread out over his father’s land, past the rolling hills of farmland and pastures. The sun was high above the treeline, causing the deep green to brighten in the light. Shadows fled from the light of day and Logan finds himself understanding the tactical retreat.
‘Opposites, such a strange concept’, thought Logan,’ one can’t exist without the other, yet they’re constantly at ends with the other. What makes them opposites? What dictated that light and darkness could not coexist? Why must one always be smaller than the other? Candles and shadows, so different yet so similar at the same time.’
He looks out at the light and imagines what it must be like for the shadows suddenly pinned to objects and people. He imagines what his own shadow thinks, the dismay it must feel when the sun peeks over the horizon and it must return to his side to survive the day. Does the light feel the same? Was it leashed to candles and torches during the night? Clinging to humanity for dear life as without the fire, it would die? He felt his mind start itching for answers that he would never receive.
“Lo, you’re doing the thing again. Kinda weird dude.” Logan blinks and suddenly he’s back in his room, back with Virgil, and back in that insufferable situation with Roman.
“You alright?”
“Yes, Virgil, I am adequate. Would you retrieve the corset from the wardrobe?” Logan pulls his shirt back on and buttons it up.
“You’re going to dress up?!”
“I’m going to attempt to divert his affections. If it does not work, I will be mildly uncomfortable at worst. If it does, he will leave by tomorrow morning.” The prince watches as his personal guard comes back and starts tying the laces with expert fingers
“Alright, Lo. I trust you.” Logan’s breath is stolen as the corset suddenly tightens around his stomach,” though I fail to see how thinning your waist is going to remedy the problem.”
What if it only made Roman try harder?
Logan’s silent for a moment,” I’m not sure. All I know is that he touched my waist when we were alone and I did not enjoy his burning touch.”
“Logan, he’s human, not a fire elemental.”
“I know, Virgil. It doesn’t make sense for his touch to have been that warm nor for my skin to tingle after I retreated-“
“Ran away.”
“Retreated. It was a tactical retreat.”
“Yeah, yeah, whatever you say, Lover Boy. Get out there and annoy that pesky prince,” Virgil chuckles and steps back to allow Logan to move once more.
“I assure you, Virgil, I have no interest-“ the guard interrupts him by shoving him out of the room and locking the door behind them.
“It doesn’t matter if you do or not. He clearly holds something for you and I’m going to make sure his pretty little fingers stay off of my crown prince.”
“Logan, my darling!”
Both males groan inwardly and look at each other at the sound of the foreign prince.

After the servants cleared away the leftover food and used dishes, Logan’s father sends the two boys off to, hopefully, bond. It doesn’t take Roman long to start a conversation, hoping to engage Logan and entice him to add his thoughts; but much to his dismay, the other just nods and looks out the window. He nearly plows Logan over when he stops at a door and opens it for him,” here’s your room. I am under the impression you’d like to freshen yourself before tomorrow?”
It takes Roman a moment to snap out of his candlelight-and-Logan trance,” oh, yes, I’d appreciate that.”
“Very well. Guards will be posted outside your room as well as your men’s dorms. If you require anything, you can ask them; however” Roman looks up at Logan’s neutral expression,” I ask that you not disturb me this evening. There’s a blood moon and I’d appreciate being left alone to study its appearance.”
“Will your lovely face match its color by the end of my visit?~” He purrs to the object of his affections as he’s let into the room. Logan merely stands in the doorway, back as straight as Roman was gay.
“I don’t believe so, but I cannot see the future. I bid you good night, Roman.”
“Good night, Prince Logan.”
And with that, Logan gently shuts the door behind him and Roman is left alone with his thoughts. He grins and falls onto the plump covers of his bed,” gods above, he’s gorgeous!”
Logan, on the other hand, steps lightly through the halls of his castle, heading towards his favorite place in the entire kingdom. The lonely footsteps echo through the corridor as his shadow passes window after window. Why his ancestors insisted on every outer wall having at least two windows, he’ll never know, but at least it allows him to see the night sky from wherever he is in the castle. Logan takes a torch from a basket at the stairs leading to the ground floor and lights it with one on the wall before continuing his trek to the southern tower. His walk isn’t long, and soon enough he arrives at the tower. The fire’s light bounces off of the stone walls as he slips into a room and closes the door behind him. He slides the torch into a slot on the wall and pulls down the trapdoor on the ceiling, dodging the ladder that comes sliding down. He climbs the stairs and heads straight to the table with papers covering every inch of the wooden surface. After checking and gathering what he needed, Logan passes through the curtain and closes it behind him so any light coming from the ladder room would be negated. The brass telescope shone in the little light he had from the stars as he takes a seat on the stool at the lens. His nimble fingers mess with knobs and dials until the moon was in perfect clarity. He makes a note of the color and sits at the stool, examining the strange occurrence throughout the night.
The color of the moon was strange, even for a blood moon. It was an almost exact match to Roman’s cloak and the banner of his country’s flag. Such a strange coincidence…
Logan shakes it off and makes a few notes, examining the sky throughout the night. It isn’t until he notices the moon starting to go down does he stop his work and head to bed. Luckily for his eyes, his room was near the telescope and he was soon under his covers with a dying fire in the fireplace. He stares at the ceiling for a moment, thinking about this strange suitor.
Roman Adalbert, prince of Hungoria. He had never met the royal children of other countries as he preferred the safe solitude of his home, and when his family held the yearly ball, he hid in his observatory. From this behavior, rumors started to spread about the Elmarian prince, about how he was deformed and hidden until his hand was given away.
Obviously, this was false information, however the damage was already done. The other royals were already suspicious of the sudden improvement in his kingdom but when they heard that Logan wasn’t participating in the politics of his own accord, it sealed the metaphorical deal. They started sending their second born or younger children, despite the horrid of an adult marrying a child, and were offended when Logan sent them back with a hard refusal. He never felt bad about it, since they were LITERAL CHILDREN, but he always felt a pang when he saw tears in their eyes. They were innocent, had no clue what they were doing, and Logan was looking out for them.
He shakes his head and turns onto his side to rest. Perhaps he would wake and it would all have been a dream.
It was not all a dream.
When Logan wakes up, the first thing he sees is that a vase of roses were delivered to his rooms with a cursive signature claiming that they were for him. He groans and puts them by the window before dressing himself. He manages to get most of it on correctly before he slides the corset on over his white tunic. He frowns, finding that he couldn’t reach the ribbons he needed to tie.
“Virgil!”
“Already here, Lo.” He feels the corset tighten as experienced fingers tie up the ribbons holding it together. He takes in a breath and relaxes after a moment.
“You surprised me, Virgil. You’re usually already here.”
“Yeah, well, princey needed extra help with his outfit today so he grabbed me out of the hall.”
“...”
“...”
“You just wanted to watch me struggle without you.”
“Damn right.”
Logan chuckles as Virgil fusses over the few wrinkles and fixes the whole attire. He shoves some leather boots onto Logan’s feet, despite his protests of doing it himself. (“You can’t do it without wrinkling your outfit. So just let me, dammit!”)
Virgil finishes his outfit with his insignia ring and a silver necklace with a deep blue stone set in the center. Logan looks at himself in the mirror,” this is satisfactory, Virgil. Well done.”
“Yeah, it’s not a big deal, sir.”
“I’ve told you before that my name is fine. We’ve been friends long enough.” Logan grabs his bag before setting it back down with a sigh. He wouldn’t be allowed to engage in his books until Roman left. How unfortunate.
“You want your weapon today?”
“Just the dagger, I suppose. It should seem inconspicuous at my hip.”
Virgil nods and wraps the belt around Logan’s waist, strapping the blade in its sheath. It isn’t long after when a knock sounds from the door and Virgil is instantly on alert. Logan opens the door and internally groans when he sees peppy hazel eyes looking into his own.
“Your dad said you like coffee in the morning!” A mug is put into his hands and he glares at Roman when he notices that the other is holding his hands closed around the warm drink.
“I suppose you were sent here for breakfast.” He steps back to allow him inside.
Roman shakes his head as he steps in,” no, my love. I came of my own accord. WOAH-“
He barely dodges out of the way of the flying purple blur as Logan thanks Virgil silently for his interference.
“He’s got good reflexes, not bad, princey.” The guard smirks and sheathes his dagger
“You’re the one who helped me choose my jewelry this morning.”
“Yeah, and thanks to that, I was late to my lord’s bedside. So not too happy with ya.” Virgil returns to Logan’s side, grinning as Logan lets the cartboy bring in their breakfast. Roman sputters and just glares at the guard,” well, can I at least eat breakfast with my love without you here?”
“I’m his personal guard, so that’s gonna be a negatory.” He plops down on the couch and kicks his feet up on the coffee table,” besides, I’m wonderful company.”
Logan keeps himself from laughing and simply takes a seat in the armchair, watching the cartboy set the plates down on the table,” here, for your efforts.”
His brown eyes widen at the shimmering copper pieces in his hand,” for me sir?”
“Sure, you’re dismissed.”
“Thank you, my lord!” He giggles and wheels the cart out happily, practically skipping.
“You know, he probably has enough to buy a house with what you’ve given him by now.” Virgil chuckles
“Perhaps, but he’s a kid. He won’t think of that. Now eat, I need my guard in his best condition.”
“Yes sir, Prince Logie,” he grins and dodges the pillow aimed for his head.
“Logie? That’s adorable! Please tell me I can us-“ Roman squeals.
“No.”
“Absolutely not.”
The red-clad prince whines,” why not? Your guard gets to-“
“He’s also my childhood best friend and the only one allowed to be alone with me so yes, he gets nickname privileges. You do not.” Logan set the pillow behind his back and started serving himself. He sighs at the meat tray and focuses on the other foods available to him. Logan’s fingers wrap around a peach and he leans back to enjoy his fruit.
Roman had served himself a heavy helping of eggs with cheese and bacon and his goblet was filled with orange juice freshly squeezed only a few hours ago. He frowns wgen he notices Virgil just sitting and watching over the two princes. Logan nudges him and motions to the food with his head. Virgil shakes his and crosses his arms over his scrawny form. Logan rolls his eyes and makes a balanced plate before handing it to Virgil along with some silverware. He shakes his head and tries to hand it back, but Logan crosses his arms stubbornly and looks at him. Virgil stares back at him for a minute before stabbing an egg angrily and shoving it in his mouth.
Satisfied, Logan leans back to see Roman staring at him,” yes?”
“How did you do that?”
“Do what?” Logan takes a bowl of grapes from the table and pops one in his mouth.
“Get him to eat! Neither of you said a word!”
Logan swallows his grape,” Virgil has been my guard since we were children so we’ve developed a form of silent communication. Originally, it was to be used during meetings when we were bored, but we’ve ended up using it whenever we have something to tell the other that we don’t want other people to know.”
“So why did you use it now?”
“Merely to avoid disturbing your breakfast. No other reason.” He hums and pops another grape into his mouth, chewing contently.
Roman frowns inwardly at his lack of emotion. Logan really was emotionless, or at the very least, he has amazing control over them. His fingers twirl his fork thoughtfully,” Logan, do you not eat meat?”
“No, I do not respect the method of acquiring it.”
Roman nods,” so you only eat fruit?”
“For breakfast. I’ll eat vegetables and grains later on during the day. Why?”
“Oh, I’m just curious! I want to get to know my husband before I marry him, after all!”
Logan resists the urge to groan and ignores the comment
“You didn’t say no!”
“He didn’t say yes, either.”
Roman whines and glares at the guard, who’s smirking and twirling his fork in the eggs. Logan watches them bicker back and forth until a knock interrupts them. He stands and answers the door, ignoring the pair behind him,” yes?”
“Roman wasn’t in his room when the cartboy brought him breakfast. I thought I would check here first.” A nervous looking man with big blue eyes looks up at him.
Logan opens the door wider to show the missing prince on his couch and the arrival rushes into his unexpected arms,” why didn’t you tell me you were leaving?! I was so worried!”
“Patton, I assure you, I’m fine.”
“I don’t care! Well, I do, but that’s not the point! You didn’t tell anyone where you were going and scared us!”
“I’m pretty sure you were the only one worried enough to come find me.” He chuckles and rubs Patton’s back. Logan closes the door and returns to his seat to finish his meal.
When he looks up again, Patton is sitting next to Roman and looking at Logan sheepishly,” I suppose I should apologize for running in without your permission, your highness. I was just so worried that Roman had run off again without his guards and was going to get hurt!”
“It’s quite alright, Patton. Raise your head, I’m not upset.”
“But-”
“I said it was fine. Now, have you eaten today? We have quite a bit of food left over if you want any.” Logan sips at his juice and looks at the servant.
“Well, no, but-”
“Then eat. We won’t stop you.”
“I can’t possibly-” He shakes his head and stands back up.
“Patton, I insist.”
They’re quiet for a moment as they look at each other, and Patton relents,” yes sir. As you wish.”
He seats himself down and nibbles on some bread as Logan picks up his book from the previous night to read a bit. He notices Roman watching him out of the corner of his eye, but chooses to ignore him.
“Is reading all you do for fun?”
“Pardon?” Logan looks up in surprise, feeling the familiar tingling on his shoulder.
“Do you do anything beyond those pages? I’m curious!” He defends himself and Logan glares slightly as the tingling spreads down his chest.
“Curiosity kills the cat, Roman. Please leave my chambers.” He stands and opens the door for him.
Roman looks at him with wide eyes,” you can’t be-”
“Leave.”
A scowl pulls at Roman’s lips, but he stands and stalks out,” Patton, return to my chambers once you’ve finished your breakfast. I’ll be waiting.”
Logan softly closes the door after him and settles his strangely upset stomach. He didn’t understand the feeling and simply seats himself down on the armchair in front of the fire.
“I should probably go…” Patton mumbles and sets his fork down on the plate. He looks regretfully at the food left over and sets his plate down on the cart.
“You don’t have to leave yet, Patton.”
The servant looks up at the crown prince in shock,” but-”
“I insist, Patton, if you wish for more, then indulge yourself. I don’t mind in the least and I’m sure if Roman cares for his employees, he’ll allow you to at least finish eating.” Logan pours himself a cup of tea and leans back into the plush cushions,” after all, the purpose of a prince is to care for the people he rules over.”
Patton sits in stunned silence before nodding and taking some more eggs. The three eat in silence until Patton stands and bows,” well, I must go. Please excuse me, your highness.”
He leaves and softly closes the door behind him.
Heat vs Steele Pt 1
Masterpost
Logan walks through the corridors of his home, watching servants bustle from room to room. He was quiet as voices surrounded him, gossiping about the potential suitor coming to attempt courting their princely heir. Logan rolls his eyes at the excited tones. Apparently, this man was of the neighboring kingdom and has had his eyes set on the stony prince since he’d heard of the challenge. Logan had compromised with his father on the matter of courting: if the suitor could make him show emotion, he’d allow them to attempt courting him. Now, this wasn’t an easy task, if the last three years gave any indication.
Many have tried, princes and princesses alike, to earn his hand, but none have succeeded in their endeavors. The most he’s ever felt was disgust, and he was easily able to hide it until he was alone again in his library.
He frowns when he notices he’s at his destination and hangs his head for a moment, the small circlet on his head glimmering in the light. He looks out over the edge of the balcony and watches as a small group of knights ride into the courtyard. His father walks out and Logan groans, realizing he was meant to meet with them shortly. His eyes watch the man in the middle -probably the prince, if that hideous cloak said anything- look around as the king approaches. He freezes when he looks up at him and stares back for a moment before turning and heading inside, the doors closing softly.
Roman grins at his men as they ride into the courtyard of the Elmarion castle, his horse naturally slowing at the soft tug of the reins. His hazel eyes gaze around at the stone walls until a glimmer catches his eye and he looks up. On the balcony above, meeting his gaze, was the objective of his mission: the supposedly emotionless Prince Logan Lightheart of the Elmari kingdom. He feels his breath catch as those startling blue eyes bore into his very soul before the prince turns and stalks back inside, most likely, coming to meet him at the door.
“You must be Prince Roman Adalbert from the Hungoria Kingdom! Welcome, my son should not be long in coming to greet you himself, but for now, I can show you the stables set aside for you.”
“That won’t be necessary sir, if I may speak. A servant boy can show us, if you don’t mind. I’d rather show them how to care for my horse so she doesn’t spook, as I’m usually the one to care for her.”
“Very well, I understand your reasoning. James!”
A young boy, around fourteen if Roman had to guess, comes skipping up at the king’s call,” yessir?”
“Show the prince where to take his horse and listen to all he has to say. The horse requires special care.”
“Yessir!”
“Good, dismissed. Prince Adalbert, I will have my son wait here for you when he decides to grace us with his presence.”
Roman chuckles,” yes, your highness, I should not be long.”
The king nods and stalks inside as Roman follows the boy with his horse trotting behind him obediently. He’s led to a clean stable and removes her saddle as well as her bridle.
“I can get those for you, sir!” Roman turns to see James struggling to carry the heavy saddle to a stand. He chuckles and trades it for the bridle. Relief fills the boy’s eyes and he listens as Roman describes how he must always be in his horse’s sight or have a hand on her so as not to startle her. James nods, hanging onto every word Roman says. When they’re finally done,Roman dismisses the boy and walks back out to the courtyard, where he sees Prince Logan reading against a wall. The sun is high in the sky as Roman approaches him and glances to the title of the book.
“I see you’re interested in astrology, mi amour.” Roman takes Logan’s hand and kisses the knuckles before the other prince takes it away from him.
“And I see you’re interested in spanish.” Logan snaps the book shut after slipping a ribbon into place,” shall we begin so as to end this business trip sooner?”
“My, you have quite the tongue, my dear prince. Are you really that eager to be rid of me?” He winks slyly and is disappointed when his flirting was unnoticed by the stoic prince.
“To be perfectly honest, I see no reason to court at such a young age, as I intend to rule with a cabinet.”
Roman frowns inwardly at the man’s clear thoughts.
“Come, I suppose I should entertain you for at least an hour before my father decides to speed this along.” He snaps out of his thoughts and nods to Logan’s suggestion.
“What is it you would like to do?”
“Well, we could go talk, for a start.”
“Very well,” Logan nods,” come, there’s a bench in the garden.
As Roman follows the strange prince, he notices the different hues of blue, silver, and white among the flowers as bees buzz around contently. Logan motions for Roman to sit and then takes a seat beside him,” what would you like to discuss?”
Roman almost says their future but corrects himself,” What are you interested in?”
“Astrology and mathematics, mostly. I also enjoy reading.”
“So you like the stories of mythical creatures and harrowing journeys the heroes take to rescue their damsels!” He smiles brightly, a connection forming in his mind.
“No, those stories are for children, Prince Adalbert. I prefer the political aspects of reading. The learning and magic of the sciences intrigues me.”
Roman feels his connection break instantly,” fair enough I assume. Please, call me Roman. I cannot stand the formalities.”
“Very well, Sir Roman.”
“Roman is enou-”
“Logan! You better be with Prince Roman, or I swear I’ll take those books!”
Logan rubs his temples as his father comes through the flower field,” oh! You actually are for once. Well, I’ll leave you, and your books,” he mentions after an unreadable look from his son,” alone.”
He turns around and starts leaving,” I’ll be in meetings for a few hours so why don’t you show Roman your brilliant bee hive?”
“Father, they’re bee hives. They wouldn’t be able to stay in one hive if they all lived together. Well, I suppose I can show you if you are interested.”
“Anything that interests my love, interests me too. Please, show me.” He stands and offers Logan a hand, frowning when he stands on his own and clasps his hands behind his back. He starts walking away through the flowers and Roman strolls along beside him, watching the gentle touch he shows to the life surrounding him.
“Truly, these flowers are beautiful, but none compare to you, my rose.”
“How many nicknames are you planning to try, Prince Roman? I’ve heard that one at least ten times by now.”
Ten times? How many suitors have attempted to win his hand? Roman questions his chances as he follows the other closely. They stop in front of a small greenhouse and Logan holds the door politely for Roman. Stepping through, his nostrils are hit by a nauseously sweet scent and he hears the door click closed behind him.
“You’re smelling the honey, Prince Roman.”
“Pardon?”
“That sweet scent, as I’ve heard it described, is the honey the bees produce from their nectar and pollen spread. Come, I shall show you.” Logan leads him further in, already marking Roman down as another failure in his mind. The prince following him had tried everything that had failed the past suitors and he was sure he’d leave the following day, like them. He knew his interests bored the royalty who asked for his hand and he knew that he’d most likely have to drop those interests once he marries. If he can put it off until all the suitors were rejected, perhaps his father would allow him to rule alone and adopt an heir. He had no intentions of being another pawn in the game he was born into.
Logan opens a box and he sees Roman’s hand go to his belt as he pulls out one of the bees’ queens. Immediately, the hive swarms around him and surrounds their queen on his arm. Roman stares as the man in front of him calmly let the bees walk over his arm, his jacket hanging on a nearby tree branch.
“How are they not stinging you?”
Logan watches the hive for a moment before turning those piercing blues to Roman’s soft hazels,” simple, really. The queen recognizes me and as she is uninjured, the rest do not attack. I am no threat to them, and they know I’ll put her back in a moment.”
He does and the bees dissipate back to the hive. Logan closes the lid of the nest and reaches to his jacket, before seeing Roman holding it open for him. He slips his arms through the sleeves and keeps himself from jumping away when Roman’s warm fingers fix his collar for him. He focuses his attention instead on buttoning the jacket up and fixing the lower edge of his attire. Logan would never admit he misses the warmth when it pulls away, but he simply leads him away.
“So what exactly is the purpose for having bees under your care, Logan?”
“Please do not refer to me by my name without my title. We are not friends, nor will you be around long enough for us to become friends.”
“Is that a challenge, mon amour?”
“”If that is how you perceive it.”
Oh, Logan, I do so love a challenge.
“Where to next, my dear?”
“It depends on where you’d like to go. We have a few extensive libraries, the stables, the fields around the castle are quite appealing this time of year, or my room.”
Roman grins,” are you inviting me to see your bed?”
“On second thought, perhaps you could make use of the bathhouse before we go anywhere else.”
He bursts out in jovial laughter,” you sure do have a way of telling your suitors off, don’t you?”
He doesn’t respond for a moment,” the others at least made themselves presentable before coming before me. You’re the first to skip the preparation phase.”
Perhaps I have a chance after all! I stand out already from the others
Roman follows that swishing, deep blue cape as he muses,” my love, why do you seem emotionless.”
“I assure you, I have emotions figuratively locked away. I’m sure you’ve noticed my father is intent on marrying me off for love, however, I intend to marry for the kingdom’s benefit. None of the previous suitors seemed to have anything beneficial to offer in exchange for my hand and so I refused them. This illusion of ‘love’ clouds their judgement and they cannot see my disinterest.”
“So their love for you impairs their vision?”
“Figuratively, of course.”
“Then I must be going blind, mon amour~”
Roman groans in disappointment when he doesn’t even get an eyeroll.
“I assure you, Prince Roman, the best healers we have will see to you if you lose your sight. We’ve arrived.”
Roman looks up at the small building,” why’s it black?”
“The color retains heat, according to my experiments, and the heat then is transmitted to the water inside. There’s also hot coals under the floor to keep the steam and soap for your use. I will wait out here for your return.”
“Why don’t-”
“I will not be joining you.” He opens his book and immediately starts reading as Roman enters the bath with a frown. Logan hadn’t reacted t anything he’d thrown at him. Compliments, flirty remarks, nicknames, hell even Remus’ indicative suggestions had no affect on the other prince. But he has to react to something. Perhaps at supper, he’d inquire into it with the king, but for now, he’d have to think of something else. He feels his body wash itself on automatic as he drifts away into his thoughts and it isn’t until he sees his skin has turned red from the heat, does he redress and leave the building. He sees Logan has read a good chunk of his book while he’d bathed.
“Come, it’s almost time for dinner.” He snaps the book closed and Roman catches a glimpse of the page before he puts it in his jacket’s inner pocket. Logan leads Roman inside, around corners, through halls, and between guards before he pauses in front of the spruce doors. The guards push open the heavy doors and bow as Logan passes through with Roman by his side. The doors close behind him with a soft slam and Logan shows Roman to his seat, pulling the chair out for him. Hazel eyes gaze around the room. They were at a table on a raised platform with balconies on every wall. There were tables laid out below theirs, currently empty, although Roman guessed they’d be filled in a moment judging by the noise outside the room.
Sure enough, servants and guards come in not long after Logan had taken his seat at the right of his father’s throne with Roman on his right.
“What’s going on?”
“My father prefers to have most of the staff here as well as his nobles for announcements during meals. I’m not quite sure why.” Logan whispers back to him as everyone settles in.
It’s quiet for a moment as the king walks in with two of his guards at his sides. They bow respectfully and he waves dismissively, standing at his throne.
“Welcome, everyone, to tonight’s dinner! I hope you’ve all had a pleasant day and a productive attitude. Tonight, we have a special guest, please welcome Prince Roman Adalbert from the kingdom of Hungoria!”
The crowd applauses him, some even wolf whistling much to his embarrassment, but he stands and waves before he seats himself again. A wave of the king’s hand silences everyone,” tonight, we shall see if the rumors are true. If the Hungorian people truly have bottomless pits for stomachs!”
Roman chuckles along with a few in the crowd and smiles politely to the king,” although we do have quite the appetite, I assure you we do not have bottomless stomachs.”
“Ah, well, that’s a relief for the cooks. Alright, everyone, I’ve held you enraptured long enough; you may eat!”
The air fills with prayers, silverware clinking, and hushed discussions between people talking about their day. Roman turns to mention his journey to Logan -hopefully to impress him with his wits and strength- but finds himself mute when he sees him with his eyes closed and hands clasped. The candlelight flickers off of his pale skin, shadows claiming the areas under his jaw and the hallows of his eyes as he prays. For the first time, Roman wonders how this man is still single and, not for the first time, swears he’ll warm that cold heart of his.
