Hamster Bot

Okay so the hamster is extremely excited over the leg as well. She had to smile a bit, it was kind of cute to see such glee over prosthetic limbs. This was clearly an extremely smart little fellow and she had to enjoy that. It wasn’t the strangest thing she’s ever seen but it did have its place on the list. He stopped and looked up at her, somehow bashful, as the giant mecha talked. Okay, translation technology, that was neat. 

“I mean, most people just give them strange looks, kind of those pitiful ones, like ‘oh no, poor girl, what happened’. At least you look downright gleeful to study them.” she lifts her head towards the speaking mecha when it spoke after the mad series of squeaks. The small fellow wanted to study her limbs? Still not the weirdest thing in her life.

“Sure. Don’t see why not. Do you need to like, bring the giant robot over here for like a scan or like, open up the panels and take a peek inside? Do you need the blueprints, I think I might have access to them but, they kinda have to let me have those since I prefer repairing myself as opposed to,” she winces slight at the thought of option B if she could not repair her own limbs if it became an issue, “going to see the white coats.”

The hamster squeaked with glee as he scampered off toward his mech. “[AN EXCELLENT IDEA. THE THREAT ANALYZER ON WRECKING BALL CAN SCAN YOUR PROSTHETICS SAFELY”]. He scampered over the top of the mech and started settling himself inside. A muffled series of squeaks came out from the metal chasis. “[DO NOT BE ALARMED. YOU WILL NOT BE SCANNED AS HOSTILE]. 

Annie was sitting in the sun, just enjoying the day. She made herself a nice hot cup of tea, no where to be for the next few hours, just a nice lazy day. That got extremely strange as first she heard squeaking, and then a voice? She looked around in utter shock before looking down at a hamster. A hamster that was currently admiring her fake arm. She just studied it for a few moments.

“I have a matching leg as well.” She carefully move the little creature before lifting her left leg and rolling up her pant leg to show off the metal. “Ta da?”

The hamster shifted his beady eyed gaze quickly to the metallic human leg and let out a long squeak. “[FASCINATING!]” the mech exclaimed in monotone. A stark contrast to the excitement in the hamster. A few moments passed, the hamster glancing excitedly between the prosthetics, before he stiffened and looked at the woman’s face. Bashfully, he tried to compose himself in as professional a manner as his little furry body could muster. “Oh. I uh. just like your prosthetics is all. Nothing personal. Sorry” he squeaked in his native hamster tongue. The mech translated “[APOLOGIES. I COULD NOT HELP BUT NOTICE YOUR PROSTHETICS. I AM INTRIGUED]”. The social adaptation program filtered Hammond’s speech in a way that made him seem less cold and agressive. A feature Hammond didn’t ask for, but sees the occasional merit in.

As time passes, Chris begins to fret. The ball hasn’t spoken up again, but it seems as though it’s processing something. A hatch at the top pops open and a large rodent comes out. Itfalls to the floor and a cry comes from it. The machine picks this up and responds with what he assumes is a censor of sorts. For all Chris knows, that rodent crawled up into the ball and the ball just expelled the fluffy thing as if it were an intruder. He scoots further away and holds his hands up. 

The creature appears to be a hamster and it begins reaching for cables and squeaking. The omnic responds to the sound as it seemed to before. Chris’ eyes go over to the ball and then back to the hamster with very human mannerisms. When the ball declaired it was not an omnic and the rodent, was in fact, the champion of the Junkertown arena, Chris lowered his hands and gawked at the furr ball. “You? You’re the one that continues to win in the arena?” 

Then the opportunity he hoped for presented itself. The hamster needed help with repair work. It’s the chance to figure out how Wrecking Ball is able to destroy all of its foes. “Of course. Right away!” The mech wiggles it’s appendage so that Chris can see where he neefds to place the cables. His brows shoot up to almost his hairline. “Wait a minute. The hamster is not Wrecking Ball? The one that recieves awards from the queen?” He places the cables where he was asked and his eyes stay on the rodent. It almost feels as if he’s in a dream. Never did he imagine his hero would end up being an intelligent hamster. And he though omnics were strange.  

A muffled cheer erupts from the walls around them as the arena sets up for another match. Hammond’s day may be over, but the arena rarely sleeps. Hammond stares down at his guest to ensure he has properly connected the cables. He makes a quick squeak of approval before rushing down to Wrecking ball and climbing back into the cockpit. “[EXCELLENT]” the translator exclaims. An approval of Chris’ usefulness. Maybe this guest isn’t such an annoyance afterall. He has certainly earned Hammond’s time if he wants it. 

Wrecking Ball’s limbs slump downward as the mech goes into standby. Only a few non essential programs remained online, Hammonds translator being one of them. The cables Chris connected pumped power back into the mech’s power cells and triggered the onboard computer for post battle diagnostics. Hammond booted up the operating system and checked the chasis for damage. A dented plate and a severed cord on one of the back-up leg servos. A pretty successful battle with minimal damage. 

Hammond, like any hamster, loves sunflower seeds. He’ll bulk order hamster feed for day to day nutrition. He does upgrade his mech. He started with a common soundboard to communicate, for example, but then upgraded to a simple AI program designed to make socializing easier for people with social disorders or disabilities. That’s why it often translates his snarky comments into things that wouldn’t upset people, much to his dismay.
