Viv + Trixie || The Unlikely Friendship

“You were?” he asked, confusion causing his voice to be a bit higher than normal. “I thought we said we’d wait until we were both out of school.” Peter stood to toss the test in the kitchen trash, then returned to sit on the coffee table across from her. He held his hands out for her to take. “Trix…”

Peter paused, not knowing exactly what to say. On the one hand, he could lie and say that he was hoping the same as she was. He could pretend that the thought of having another child didn’t terrify him. He could say he wasn’t worried about the money, or the space, or the loss of sleep. He could pretend the agree with her, and she’d see right through him.

Or, he could tell the truth. “Baby,” he murmured, looking at their hands. “You know we can’t afford another kid right now. Even if we had the money, we’re both so busy. We barely get to see Nat as it is, working and going to school.” He paused, gauging her reaction. “I don’t even know if I’d want another.”

“Yeah, but...it’s fine,” Trixie shook her head as she wiped another tear, her sadness becoming more apparent. “I know, but...I think we could do it. We did it with Nat, y’know. It wasn’t impossible,” She mumbled, wiping more tears away as Peter went to toss the negative test away. With a sigh, she took Peter’s hands with her own shaky and cold ones, hoping they’d warm her up a bit. Logically, she agreed with Peter. They had to focus on school and raising Nat first all while juggling work, but emotionally...Nat would be so better off with a sibling. 

Peter had just finished trimming his stubble and was about to drop his razor in the bin when he noticed something odd peeking out from under a receipt. Not one to shy away from a bit of mess, he reached in and dug it out. His heart dropped as he realized what it was, and the shock wave that ran through his veins caused him to drop it, sending it seemingly thundering onto the linoleum. 

After a moment, he crouched to take a closer look, refraining from touching it this time. Luckily, it landed right side up, and Peter caught a glimpse of a single thin red line. He let out a sigh of relief and picked it up. As he studied the test more closely, he wondered why Trixie would try to hide it. After all, he knew she wouldn’t want another kid anytime soon, anyways. If it had been the other way around, he would have showed her right away, so they could laugh about the close call and revel in their relief that it was negative. 

“Hey, Trix?” he called as he trotted to the living room, pregnancy test still in hand. “Why’d you hid this in the bin? We should be celebrating! Break out the alcohol! You can still drink!” He came around to the front of the couch and knelt in front of her. It wasn’t until he saw her tear stained eyes that he stopped laughing. “What’s wrong?”

Trixie had to admit to herself that she had been having baby fever after spending countless times sighing at her phone looking at baby cribs on instagram and baby pictures of Natalie all over again. So when she saw the red line appear on the test she chucked it into the garbage bin, fishing out a receipt...or twenty from her bag to hide it. It wasn’t a big deal, she thought to herself. Maybe she lucked out, maybe this was a sign saying that she needed to wait things out...even if things seemed to be going in the right direction. 

Her head might’ve tried to rationalize it, but her heart didn’t. So she flopped onto the couch, trying to wipe her eyes to hide her tears of frustration. The one time she actually was prepared, it didn’t happen. She had tried to occupy herself by attempting to sketch a new tree house, but she can’t help but still feel the tears stream down her face. She sighed, wiping her eyes again, her head slowly looking up to see Peter’s happy expression.
