Twilight isn't so oblivious to his own feelings after all. He just has no other choice but to do everything he can to convince himself that what he feels are merely carelessness or failings on his part.
I think the recent chapters mirror chapters 13 and 14 of the manga. If we go back to chapter 13, we'll remember how affected he was by seeing the genuine affection between the Briar siblings, who, despite their imperfect relationship, share a genuine complicity and affection. Things that Twilight no longer remembers how to feel, and this made him realize that he felt envious of that. He not only envied them, but unconsciously tried to include himself in that environment.
The day after this incident, Twilight tries to test Yor to see if she was suspicious and fails miserably. Perhaps it was an attempt to convince himself that she wouldn't affect him, and in the end she did. He felt guilty for doubting her and was hooked by her when she said she was "grateful to have married him." However, in the same chapter, Frankie makes a point of reminding him that he is a spy and that people like them can't let their emotions take over, as it can be fatal.
Yor's relationship with Yuri reflects what Twilight desperately desires deep down: love, affection, and companionship. Twilight is hungry for love, and that's precisely why he put himself in danger when he fought Yuri. He lacks the courage not only to hurt Yor, but also to shatter the image he saw in chapter 13. Because if he did, he would also shatter the image of his deepest desire. Not killing Yuri wasn't just for Yor's sake, it was for his own too.
"If she lost him, she would lose the motivation to be married to me. And Operation Strix would suffer because of it." The "Operation Strix" he talks about so much is himself. He uses "Operation Strix" in place of "I, me, mine."
And it is in this thirst to belong, to be loved and to love as well, that he begins to mold himself so naturally to the Forgers, to Yor, and even to Yuri too.
Twilight's subconscious adapts him to this life because, in the end, it's what he desires most. And that's why he's constantly blaming himself, stressing, and collapsing. Because what he is at this moment (a spy) no longer makes sense in his life, but he's only known this life. He programmed himself to be this way, but he's being reprogrammed. So it's not like he's completely oblivious. He understands his situation, he knows there's a specific emotion for Yor, but he can't discern WHICH emotion. He doesn't know what it is to love someone, so he's always berating himself for not being perfect enough. He's failing. Yor is constantly telling him that he doesn't need to be perfect, that he also needs to look at himself and validate himself. Totally the opposite of what he's always believed.
I like how Twilight's growth isn't linear. It feels painfully slow a lot of the time, but that's close to real life. It's so difficult for people to change, let alone a battle-hardened spy who has to remain hypervigilant or else face death by torture (while believing world peace will collapse).
All the way back in chapter 14, Twilight acted quite callously toward Yor by bugging her clothes and then cornering her as an SSS officer in disguise.
She took him completely off guard with her defensive reaction, willing to fight the SSS on Loid Forger's behalf.
This led Twilight to waver in his conviction and feel bad about what he did, as Franky observed:
More than 100 chapters later he realizes in a panic that his actions have come back to bite him. Yor might recognize Lieutenant Curtis and who knows what she might say in front of a house full of SSS agents, or what she might say to her brother or someone else in private later. Any doubt on her part could eventually lead to suspicions against Loid Forger.
So he doubles down on the "do whatever it takes" mindset. Doesn't matter if he has any affection for Yor at this point, he'll tranquilize her if it means escaping this nightmare he's created for himself. His brain is so overtaxed he can't think of any other escape plan.
And he actually goes through with it (though unexpectedly for him, Yor is immune).
Luckily for him, he's able to get out of the party with no one suspecting anything, and when he subconsciously recognizes he's safe, he almost collapses. Again leaning on Yor (literally) as someone he can let his guard down around.
Now we see the look of guilt once again. And not just guilt, but yearning (the sparkle) and the deep sense that he doesn't deserve Yor's help and care. If she knew how he'd mistreated her -- bugging her clothes, threatening her as an SSS agent, and injecting her with a tranquilizer -- surely she wouldn't look at him with such compassion. When he says "I'm sorry," he means it.
I wonder if just like in chapter 14, Twilight will have a conversation with Franky about what happened. It'll start off as a rant about how Franky's watch didn't work and he's cutting off his R&D funds, but when Franky makes him explain what exactly happened, maybe Franky will be like "Wait a minute, you used it on your wife? That's cold, man!"
"She's not my real wife, it's only for the--"
"Are you serious, that woman has done more for the mission than anyone other than Anya! And me, you better not forget--"
To which Twilight will probably snap back in anger because he doesn't know what to do with all his guilt. In order to cover for the shady things he previously did to Yor, he just did something even shadier, and he'll wonder if it'll just continue in this vicious cycle. It's worse now because he actually feels something deeper for her. He's simultaneously willing to stand in front of a loaded gun for her, and to knock her out cold in order to survive.
I really hope we see someone like Franky or even Handler or the old WISE agent call Twilight out in the middle of the turmoil he's going through. Don't just let this moment of character growth (or regression) slip by and go unspoken.
Just a random connection that occurred to me witb this chapter 136. Yor is caught up between two men in her life who she loves both, and struggles with how they depend on her and vise versa.
Yuri, her brother, who Yor loves unconditionally and she raised him on her own. Yuri absolutely is struggling to not be dependent on Yor. He wants to become a child around her as an adult to some extant. He's internally conflicted about it as chapters go on, and especially as this arc shows he's not in denial but still frustrated. He remains over the top, and for a while I did think it was almost like a bit. But he physically dies over Yor telling him "no, you're an adult, also i want to cuddle with my husband"
But then, Loid is just the foil to Yuri in the other direction. Loid/Twilight is so independent. That's part of his trauma and who he is and how war shaped him. His perfectionism is literally giving him stomach pain but he fears without perfectionism he'll not survive. Yor wants Loid to have depend on her, but he says "i'm not perfect enough as a spy" mentally. He's running away from Yor being intimately caring of him but also his body fails to follow his brain about it.
Yor is then stuck in the situation of, with Yuri, having a brother who won't stop bothering her even though he's older and can take care of himself. And Yor doesn't want Yuri to rely on her anymore, because what would the parenting have all been for?
And, with Loid, who she asked to continue the marriage. From Yor's perspective, Loid is the man she chose to be with -> she wants to take care of him, and her reasoning is perfect -> he's the first man who has reciprocated emotional needs she never realized she had. She wants him to fall apart, so she can do his laundry and make him breakfast at least once in a while. She loves him. And she has agency and can set conditions on this love for Loid (especially for when the eventual reveal may happen) unlike her inherent unconditional love for Yuri.
But Loid is currently trying to avoid all of that, because his childhood had parents and friends dying, father telling him he's not good enough, and just the lived reality of being a war orphan. Getting into a relationship is dangerous to his fragile emotional security.
If Yuri and Loid could swap their mindset, Yor's dealings with both of them would probably make her a whole lot happier. But, the point is Yuri and Loid are two sides of what I think Endo is articulating as what are the faults of relying on tools from childhood to live life when those tools aren't necessary as adults. And it leaves this question of who the child in Yor is innately (not the one Yuri remembers in flashbacks): what does it all mean for Yor to want to take care of an adult man she hardly knew, and in less than 6 months(?) after wanting to move on from needing to care for her baby brother because he's old enough to actually work for a living.
One thing I love about the current arc is seeing Yor dealing with her love towards Loid. We're seeing a female main character deal with butterflies in her stomach, her trying to muster up courage - I don't know about you, but I've so often seen female characters butchered when it comes to romance, or the whole fandom dotes on the male main lead - so I'm all for seeing Yor's development first. Gotta hand it to Endo-sensei here.

SxF chapter 134 had me giggling and kicking my feet like a school girl omg
Here are my fave moments as usual with a little bit of analysis (if you can call it that lol)... Spoilers ahead...
actually I'm so much more fond of Yuri after his emotional eating of those cookies a while back 😂
Its funny how Yuri is still in denial that he too, is being drawn to Loid's orbit.
Like, my man, you're the one who initiated that fist bump...
When wifey and I fight...
Clam up? Ho ho, Chadwick and company, if you only knew the reality of what happens to Loid when he and his beloved wife "fight"...
State A: complete and utter panic as he assumes 100% of the blame with 0 evidence
State B, tightly correlated with A: gross overcompensation and willingness to bankrupt his employer with the bill (note the helicopter in his thoughts below)
State C: sustaining life-threatening injuries during the actual "fight"
In all cases...Loid Wife Guy Forger completely grovels before his wife who can do no wrong in his eyes.
All the SSS men in the room: Well damn...really glad our wives aren't here to hear all this...
Chloe: Forget salary, where can I find a man like that? Why am I settling for Yuri?
Twilights poor, poor stomach 😭😭😭
Spoilers for chapter 134
Damn, Endo sensei giving us a Loid confession quick.
Did anyone have Loid confessing to the SSS first in their cards?
Gotta love how Hemlock is going on a mission date with Millie then Twilight gets roped into this with his slightly less frosty relationship with Yuri.

Minor spoilers but not really...
Wouldn't it be funny if Twilight is younger than Loid like Anya is younger than she says?

We FINALLY have Loid's Age!!!

What if Lu Guang is the one who will die at the end?
I was thinking about a potential Link Click ending. So we know Lu Guang and Cheng Xiaoshi have to meet to preserve that node as not meeting goes against the timeline. It also means they do the dives... And CXS has to die.
Except, Bridon arc showed us that CXS, force of nature that he is, is already creating subtle ribbles in time - he's behaving contrary what Lu Guang remembers. Those shifts could have had bigger consequences, for example, not investigating the Bridon photo or delaying learning crucial information. We have the interruption of the news broadcast before they go to Bridon too - meaning other players are also changing the timeline...
So what if a timeline isn't as fixed as Lu Guang likes to make it sound? What if there's a narrow stream of acceptable possibilities that time will permit? The earthquake arc showed us this, with Cheng Xiaoshi depositing messages and making small changes which helped numb the pain of loss in the future.
Why is that important? We are made to take Cheng Xiaoshi's death as a node. But is it? Or is the node that shiguang has to die? One half has to 'fly away' so to speak.
So what if Cheng Xiaoshi gets a near-fatal injury, and it's near-fatal because Lu Guang took some of the fate for him?
But what I think is more striking is when Cheng Xiaoshi learns about the years of loss, loneliness and stress Lu Guang experienced. If the writers give us good time for this to mature, I'd want to see just how much memory and lived experience of suffering the present Cheng Xiaoshi can soothe for the present Lu Guang. How well can Cheng Xiaoshi help Lu Guang heal when CXS is the main reason LG needs healing?
And then, what if Lu Guang can't heal? What if, despite having CXS knowing him better and the loneliness not being so poignant, what if Lu Guang is still grieving and suffering - and Cheng Xiaoshi can see this, can see Lu Guang's suffering.
So what if Lu Guang dies and Cheng Xiaoshi accepts it because Lu Guang is finally at peace. He's no longer suffering. The memories of the timelines went down with him, but Cheng Xiaoshi and Qiao Ling remember Lu Guang and honor his memory by continuing the photo studio, building a life Lu Guang could smile down on?
Lu Guang wanted Cheng Xiaoshi to live, and Cheng Xiaoshi promises to - and he fulfills that wish to the fullest.
One final touch, if Lu Guang couldn't move past his grief and repair as we are shown again and again in season 1, then maybe him coming to a rest is the more natural ending.
We often forget Xia Fei is a Physics student
And we're watching a time travel donghua
This HAS to be important somehow. Link Click does not drop such obvious clues for no reason. It's going to come up at some point. With nodes and timelines, I'm waiting for the Theory of General Relativity and the E=mc^2 whack to come up in s3.
I hope so! I think "Xia Fei is a Physics Nerd" could be a fun tag addition to AO3. I have a few ideas of him using equations to draw pictures or getting out of food deal scams, but I'm secretly hoping his knowledge can help them solve some of the timelines! Lots of space, time, distance, parallel and paradoxical stuff going on. Maybe even dimensions? I also think he's always been good at math since he was a kid since Cheng Weimin is shown proctoring algebra exams.
Photography being all “light + time” captures a moment...hey, you can put that into physics too--I think they should let him be smart. He's born to nerd but forced to be canonically hot and it did nothing to save him from being broke 😔 Maybe even let him play chess against Liu Xiao, I don't know. I think he'd enjoy getting to do other stuff that values his intellect and not his looks, maybe he can even engineer something since iirc that's the specific thing with physics he was into, and just leave half the cast baffled for a bit.
This: He's born to nerd but forced to be canonically hot and it did nothing to save him from being broke 😔
That £38 in Bridon is not going to go far. He might survive on too good to go bags for a time but 😭
It's so easy to forget his intellect because of his green tea btch attitude and fawning over his laoban. Honestly, I want to see this happen... And I want to see his dynamics with Li Tianchen too. This is so exciting!
And the engineering part too... Oh yes I'm tots down for it.

An analysis on Anya (an Anya-lysis!)
As promised in my Twiyor season 1 wrap up post, it's time for me to give Anya time in the analysis spotlight – an "Anya-lysis" if you will! (yes, I've been waiting to make that pun!)
*I apologize in advance for the length of this post. I felt that splitting it into two would have hindered the flow of the analysis, so I kept it as one long post. But I promise it's not as long as it seems...the high number of images make it seem longer!*
Before I get into my analysis, I wanted to preface this post with a fantastic quote from @incomingalbatross, who perfectly describes the unique role Anya has in the series.
"Realizing that Spy X Family really is The Anya Show to me, and not just because "oh look, cute baby child" but because Anya is the center of the story. She has so many secrets resting on those tiny shoulders. She is juggling so many agendas. She's the one who knows everything and her choices drive the plot—she chose Twilight, she chose Yor, she chose Bond—and even when you look at the other characters and their relationships she IS the star they orbit around! Twilight and Yor's relationship is built on their shared care for Anya! And more than that, at the core of it all, Anya's goals are the ones we're invested in.
The center of this story isn't the superspy trying to do his job, or the assassin trying to do hers. It's the little girl who said "FAMILY" and pulled the building-blocks of one close around her with all her tiny strength, and everyone else in this story keeps being moved and changed and redirected by the force of Anya's attachments to her family.
And at the same time she is SO SMALL"
While Twilight may be the protagonist, and Yor the deuteragonist, Anya is definitely the main character in Spy x Family. Not only would there be no "family" without her bringing Twilight and Yor together, but her status as the main character is quite unique among shonen series, or even media in general.
Typically in stories where a little kid (like, below the age of 10) is the main character, either the majority of other major characters are also little kids, or the kid's main purpose is to be a cute comic-relief foil for the adults. But while there are kids Anya's age in SxF, the other important characters in the plot, namely Twilight and Yor, are not. So rather than the typical scenario of the main kid character constantly being surrounded by and working off their fellow kid characters, Anya is more often interacting with her adult parents. And it's not just for cutesy moments and comic relief – the true heart of SxF is about a fake family that could any minute be destroyed, with only little Anya being aware of this grim reality and doing everything she can to keep things together...all without the ability to be truthful with anyone, not with the adults or her fellow kids. While her parents are each secretly fighting for their own vision of world peace, Anya is too…the "world peace" of the family she doesn't want to lose. It really is a one-of-a-kind scenario for a little kid character.
But having such a special main character role doesn't necessitate a well-written character. But in Anya's case, she definitely is. In fact, I think she's the most well-written little kid character I've ever seen.
Too often in media little kids are portrayed as being overly cutesy, overly bratty/whiny, and/or act much older than they should. A key factor in making a little kid character believable is that you can't just make them cute and/or emotionally immature...they have to also be weird. Anyone who's spent time with little kids knows all the weird stuff they say and do because of their less restricted child brains and ignorance about the world. A good example of this is Lilo from Lilo and Stitch (another well-portrayed kid character). The movie does a good job showing all the weird habits Lilo has, like the bizarre origins of her favorite doll, the freaky voodoo stuff she does to the local bullies, and how she totally buys the fact that Stitch is a dog. Likewise, Anya has tons of little endearing weirdnesses, starting with her wanting a spy dad and assassin mom simply because she thinks it's "cool," to the funny lingo she develops like "ooting" (odekeke) and "ohayou-masu" ("happy morning," a.k.a, an adorably incorrect way of saying "good morning"), to thinking it's acceptable to give George a leaf as a parting gift (then wanting it back later), to her comical remarks whenever she thinks Loid and Yor are being "flirty."
Another realistic aspect of Anya's character is the fact that she's not super-smiley and overly cheerful/bubbly like many other main character kids. Not that she doesn't smile and can't be cheerful, but her default expression is a look of uncertainty or wide-eyed cluelessness, which makes sense considering her upbringing (I'm talking about her default expression in canon, not in merch or other marketing as characters tend to always smile in these even if that's not their usual expression – just look at Yuri's merch!) Most of the time when other characters are talking, she looks perplexed, like she isn't sure what's going on but she's really trying to learn/understand.
These expressions make more sense to me than a child who smiles all the time, because she's at an age where she still doesn't understand the right emotions to feel at the right time. A fantastic example of this is when she punches Damian – her face is totally blank! No anger, no fear, no embarrassment...because she still hasn't learned the proper emotions to feel in a situation like this.
All she knew was what Yor told her and that she was bothered by Damian's attitude. In fact, the iconic smug smile that she shows in that scene is the result of her not knowing how to properly react when faced with bullying (cry, get angry, etc).
Similarly, she has a very bored expression when all the kids are upset about George's plight, as if she doesn't really get what all the to-do is about. This also creates good contrast to how the other Eden kids from their rich families were probably forced to grow up fast, and thus act more like 8-10-year olds than the 6-year olds they're supposed to be. Meanwhile Anya, who's supposedly younger than them, stands out with her more childlike mannerisms.
This all makes sense not just because she's still a little kid, but because her view of emotions has been skewed by the fact that she can read people's minds. So she has to not only learn the socially proper way to react to people's actions and words, but also when she should, or should not, react to what's on their mind. I believe this is why she has such a wide variety of expressions compared to the other characters – her mind reading has forced her to experience way more emotions at such an impressionable age, though not always with enough context and guidance to identify when they're socially acceptable to express.
There are way too many examples of Anya's incredible range of expressions, so I'll just have to pick a few!
Put all this together – her childlike reactions to situations, but with a twist because she can read minds, plus her endless array of comical faces, and you have one of the funniest characters I've ever seen.
Because Anya has such a wide variety of expressions, and her default expression is that of uncertainty, there's a lot more meaning when she does smile. The shining smile she has when Loid praises her for getting a stella, when she plays with Bond for the first time, and when she meets up with Becky after their shopping trip, have a lot more significance because that's not an emotion she expresses all the time. Since happy/cheerful isn't her default mood, the emotional impact of scenes where she does smile is all the more stronger.
Likewise, considering her age, Anya isn't much of a crier either. Having a kid character burst into tears and throw temper tantrums is common, but the amount of notable times Anya has exhibited this behavior is relatively few. She did have a tantrum early on when Loid stopped her from going into his room and when she demanded that Bond be her dog…but those are the only notable cases in my opinion. She has shed tears here and there, but again, not a significant number of times. Similar to the scenes where she smiles, when she does cry (in a non-comical way), like when she's reminded about her mother at the Eden interview or when she's finally reunited with Yor after the bus hijacking, it has a lot more meaning.
Another common trait for little kid characters is that they're usually a representation of total purity and innocence. While Anya doesn't have the same dark ulterior motives and immoral occupations that the adults have, she's not shown to be a complete angel either. Even though good intentions are what drive her, she can be a manipulator, mischievous, and even cocky at times, like when she insists on being called' "Starlight Anya" after getting her first stella, when she was being overly competitive with Damian after the bus hijacking, when she was joking around on the bus after finding out the bombs were fake, and when she almost attacked Bond after he chewed up Penguinman. But all of these examples only serve to make her a more fleshed out character as opposed to just being the cutesy, happy series mascot all time.
Obviously because of her mind reading powers, she manipulates the adults around her all the time, but again, there's never any malice involved…it's clearly the result of a little kid doing everything in her power to keep the happy family she's created. And due to her mind reading ability, she's learned to be much more proactive than reactive – she knows what people are going to do before they do it, and what their intentions are without them saying it. This has allowed her to become resourceful way beyond her years, which has led to her saving the lives of both Twilight and Yor on more than one occasion.
One emotion Anya does have an abundance of is empathy. Typically children don't start to develop empathy – the ability to understand and relate to the intentions and feelings of others – until a bit past Anya's age. But because of Anya's ability to read minds, it makes sense that this part of her development would take priority over something like proper speech and school smarts. Her empathy extends to all the adults around her, her fellow kids, and even animals. While a lot of her empathetic actions stem from her need to help keep Twilight's and Yor's identities secret and thus maintain the peace of the Forger family, there are many examples where this isn't the case and she's simply acting out of nothing but concern for others: comforting the Eden cow because she understood it was scared, worrying about the well being of the Project Apple dogs, leaping into action when she heard someone drowning, and comforting Damian when she knew he was scared during the bus hijacking.
Even when identity reveals aren't at stake, she still comforts Twilight and Yor when they need it, like when she thought Twilight had a nightmare after his backstory reveal, and when she knew Yor was concerned about Loid's relationship with Fiona.
The bus hijacking was a prime example of Anya being empathetic, but not to an unrealistic degree. She empathized with Billy enough to diffuse the situation, but not on a deeper level because, again, she's a little kid. She understood he was upset, but she didn't have outpouring sympathy or deep, introspective thoughts about his situation – that's something an adult would do, not a little kid who's still learning what emotions to feel at what times. What she eventually does is something that makes perfect sense both for her personality and age. With some great resourcefulness on her part, she was able to figure out what she had to say to manipulate Billy the right way, but at the same time she was playing it by ear and basically clueless as to the depth of the matter, yet mustered up all the courage she could…typical Anya.
There are a lot more examples like this of Anya's sense of empathy, too many to list. But the bottom line is, although Anya does use her powers to manipulate people to benefit her own situation and those she cares about (who can blame her?) it's clear that even at such a young age, she's a genuinely good girl who wants to help others and do good in the world, even if she's too young to realize it yet. Not unlike her parents, really. I think we'll be searching a long time before we find another 1st-grade aged character as awesome as Anya.
Lovely analysis. 🥹
