Cheers abrupt around the bar when you walked inside. Curiosity got the better of you. You found a crowd surrounding the open part of the area. You walked closer and tip toed to get a better look. Your eyes widened.
“Gonna be your first time, sweetheart?” The voice was deep, not as deep as Kento’s. It immediately alarmed you, goosebumps rising in your arms. You turned around and nodded.
“I don’t have this from where I’m from,” you replied.
“Not a surprise. You’re the big talk of the town.”
“I’m not surprised either,” you said with a tiny laugh. “Looks fun.” You felt your body stiffen when he placed his arm around your shoulders. You did your best to keep distance from him as he tried to pull you in closer.
“Well, sweetheart, I’ll let you wear my cowboy hat and you can go for a joyride.” You didn’t like the way he said it. You tried to take a step back, but his grip was tight.
“The fuck you doing with my girl, Beau.” You felt the arm leave. You were relieved and you smiled to see Kento walking up to you two, coldly.
“What, Ken? Don’t want me picking up girls here now too?” Beaut questioned. “Just because you’re all top notch, you think you own the place?”
“No,” he said with a mocking laugh. Kento pulled you close to him. “This girl, my girl, she’s off fucking limits.”
“Oh shit, man! You’re serious!” Beau laughed. “My bad then.” Beau walked away. You looked up, Kento was eyeing him like an eagle. You tugged on his shirt lightly to grab his attention. He looked at you curiously and you smiled.
“You’re here,” you said. Kento nodded, his frown still evident on his face.
“And you’re here alone?” You blushed.
“Shoko’s working. I was curious on what was going on, and I wanted to check it out first.” Kento’s face softened with a smile. He looked at you up and down. You blushed. You wore skinny jeans and a white cropped tank, showing a sliver of skin across your abdomen. Your hair was French braided to rid the hair away from your face.
“Trying to fit in, dear?” he asked. You blushed even more.
“S-Shoko basically put them on me,” you answered. “See?” You put your foot out. Kento smiled at the cute brown cowgirl boots.
“You look beautiful,” he said. “Dress however you like, dear. I love it all. Even your city girl outfits.” He kissed your cheek, making your body feel warm and bubbly. You listened to the soft chuckle he sang in your ear as he stood up. He held your hand, bringing you closer to the bull. Everyone took a step to the side to let you two walk through. “My lovely city girl would like to give it a try.” Your eyes widened.
“Wait what?” you questioned. You briefly looked around as everyone cheered. “Do I get to have a do-over, Kento?”
“Not at all, my dear.” Kento placed his hand on the mechanical bull. “Now, it starts out easy, so you’ll be able to get a gist of this guy. Show my small town what you’re made out of, city girl.” Everyone cheered you on. You nodded and nervously went on the bull. Kento placed his hands on your hips, helping you get seated. You were getting yourself situated until you felt something on your head. You looked up to see the rim of Kento’s cowboy hat. “Yee-haw, city girl. Good luck.” You swallowed the nervous lump in your throat and nodded. Kento flashed you one last smile before getting off the plushy platform. “Start ‘er up, Kip!”
“Alright! Let’s see how our city girl rides the bull!” Kip announced. You gasped when the movement started. You held on tightly to the handle. Immediately, you got the hang of it as it became harder. You picture Kento on his bull rides. You gripped your right hand tightly on the handle before raising your left arm up in the air, just like him. The crowd cheered louder for you. You basked in the excitement and laugh. You screamed and squeal that was combined with surprised and excitement when you almost fell off.
“City girl! City girl! City girl!” The crowd cheered.
“Whoooooo—Whoa!!” You finally fell off. The cheering continued. You laughed as you sat up. You see Kento’s hand in your vision and you immediately grabbed it so he can help you up. His hands cupped your face, turning it in different angles before holding onto your shoulders. His eyes looked up and down. He’s happy, no injuries. Kento took the hat off the platform and placed it back on your head. His hand rested on the small of your back as he guided you to the hardwood floor of the bar. “That was amazing, Kento!” Kento laughed and held your hand.
“You did fantastic, my dear,” he said and brought your knuckles to his lips. You blushed and shyly looked away. “C’mon, let’s go meet Shoko and buy my favorite city girl a drink.”
The moment you two sat down, Shoko placed your favorite cocktail and Kento’s beer on the table.
“The first drinks are on the house. By the way girl, that grip strength you got is immaculate!” Shoko exclaimed. You laughed and took a sip through the straw.
“Probably from the kneading,” you replied. “My arms still get sore from all the baking.”
“How’s the business coming along?” she asked.
“It’s not bad, actually. I was finally able to finish and deliver orders today. I’m working on names for the bakery and creating custom logos for it,” you answered.
“Kento, how’s her outfit? Cute, huh?” Shoko asked. She smirked. She loves watching one of her long time best friend looking at the girl he likes. It’s the way Kento smiles when he sees you. The way his eyes soften and, Shoko can see the admiration and love in those eyes. She knew him for not being so serious in a relationship before to not thinking about being one. Then, you came along. She knew already, just from day one when you freaked out and cupped his face with your hands. Kento blushed, his eyes remained in your eyes with concern. And despite that freak out, Kento’s shoulders relaxed. She almost saw him lean in your touch.
“You did a good job, Shoko,” Kento replied, his eyes remaining on you. “Appropriate attire for the bull riding. Was it on purpose?”
“It was. She was wearing a dress when I came over.”
“A comfortable one,” you retorted back with arms crossed across your chest.
“Yeah and wear that on a mechanical bull and people can see those lacy panties you wear underneath.” Both you and Kento blushed and took a sip of your drinks. Shoko laughed. “Now you two look like virgin high schoolers. Looking all shy and crap. C’mon, Kento! You’ve seen them all.”
“Really, Shoko?” Kento questioned in complaint. You blushed, hard. It felt hotter inside. You brushed the fly-away of hairs out of your face.
“Give her the hat, she rides the cowboy. Thats twice now,” she said with a wink before she tended to other customers. Slowly, your eyes moved to meet his.
“Is—Is that an actual thing?” you asked. You watched his cheeks turn a hue of pink.
“N-Not really. I mean, I truthfully haven’t thought of it when I let you hear my hat,” he answered. His hand moved behind his head as he nervously scratched the back of his head. “I’m not trying to have sex with you, if that’s what you’re worried about.”
“I-I’m not,” you replied. You let out a quiet laugh. “I do feel like a virgin high schooler right now.” Kento laughed with you.
“Aye! It’s our bull rider!” The two of you turned around. You found a group of cowboys walking up to you guys. Kento gave each of them a handshake. “When’s the final event?”
“End of fall, Cade,” Kento answered.
“Who’s the pretty girl you’re with?” another asked. You shifted closer to Kento, immediately feeling uncomfortable with the way he eyed you. Kento wrapped his arm around your shoulders protectively. Kento didn’t like the predatory look he was giving you.
“Fuck, find your own girl, Colt,” Kento said, slight irritation heard in his voice.
“That your hat, Ken? Don’t you share?” You felt the grip on your shoulder tighten.
“Fuck off, Colt. Don’t talk about my girl like that.”
“What happened to the player?”
“Colt, shut up,” Cade said then smirked when he looked at you. “Besides, she can come with me next.” Kento stood up abruptly. The chair screeching back against the hardwood floor. You held on to his shirt to back him away. Colt and Cade laughed. “Chill, dude. We’re just fucking around.”
“Doesn’t sound like it, dude,” he replied irritably.
“Alright, alright. We’re leaving. Let’s go boys.” You remained behind Kento as the group left. Kento shifted and returned back to his seat. He looked at you worriedly and held your hand.
“You alright?” You nodded. “They aren’t good news.”
“They don’t sound like it,” you said. “Thanks.”
“Protecting me.” He gave you a soft smile. His hand moved to your cheek and you can feel his thumb softly caressing your cheek.
“I always will, city girl. You were trying to tell me something?”
“Alright.” Kento faced forward and moved his hand to yours. He waved his arm up to catch Shoko’s attention. “Shoko! Drinks over here! Make a special for my favorite lady over here!”
Kento held your hand as you two walked side by side back home. You two walked in the comfortable silence of the summer night. You leaned your head on his shoulder, making the man smile.
“Thank you for tonight, Kento,” you said softly.
“You’re welcome, Y/N,” he replied to you softly. “You looked like you a lot of fun tonight.”
“I did! I think riding a mechanical bull became a new favorite thing to do,” you added. Kento chuckled.
“My favorite thing to do is watching you ride the bull,” he said, a playful smile appearing on his face. You blushed and lifted your head off his shoulder. Kento laughed lightly. “I love watching you enjoy your time.”
“Please, all you see me do is bake.”
“And I find it very enjoyable.”
“It’s not that enjoyable.”
“I do. Watching you smile when you make the perfect loaf of bread. Watching you learn to decorate cakes.” Kento shrugged and looked at you. “I enjoy it. Can’t explain it. I just do.”
“I’m glad I’m not a bore,” you said. You watched him frown, which puzzled you. “Kento?”
“You shouldn’t look down on yourself so much,” he said. The two of you turned the corner, and soon enough, you were at your front yard. Kento had you stand in front of him. Hands cupping your face, thumbs caressing your cheeks. “You’re an amazing woman who has dreams and ambitions. I admire that about you. It doesn’t make you boring at all.”
“T-Thank you, Kento,” you mumbled.
“Remember that, okay?” You nodded, thoughts one after another swirling your head. “What are you thinking about?” You blushed. You swallowed away the nerves and stood on your toes, leaning in to kiss Kento’s lips. For a second, his eyes widened in shock until he finally closed them. His one hand moved to the back of your head and he stood closer to close the gap between your two bodies. Your hands trembled as they trailed up his chest and then around his neck. Kento wrapped an arm around your waist, kissing you deeply. Hesitantly, and slowly, you pulled away. You looked at Kento with large eyes while he looked at you sweetly, blue eyes turning black with desire.
“That,” you mumbled, your face heating up, eyes slowly avoiding the fiery look in his. Kento’s thumb caressed your cheek and you leaned in his large, calloused palm with comfort. “I don’t want this to end.”
“It doesn’t have to,” he said quietly. “Tell me what you want to do and we’ll do it.”
“I…I want to sit on my couch with you, cuddle, and fall asleep while watching some movie or TV series.” You felt his lips on your forehead.
“Okay. Let me wash up and I’ll be over in ten minutes. Okay?”
You stared at Shoko’s shocked face. You could only laugh away the feeling on how awkward you felt from her silence. Shoko laughed along with you.
“So you initiated that kiss! That’s amazing!” she exclaimed. You blushed. “So, what does that mean?”
“I-I don’t know. How do relationships even work now? Don’t the guys ask their girls to be their boyfriend?” you asked curiously.
“Not all the time,” she answered slowly, thinking to herself if they even do. “Yeah, I’m not too sure.”
“Don’t even ask if you’re ready for a relationship. You and Kento are basically in one already. What is he up to right now anyway?”
“Out on the road for his events,” you said sadly. “I feel like a lovesick high school girl. I miss him already.”
“Ah, so you love him already?”
“N-No! But I really, really like him.”
“Not because he looks like your dead fiancé?” You laughed.
“I forget about my dead fiancé,” you answered. “I forget about the pain and heartbreaks. I forget about my sad life. I just feel so free.”
“Then, I’m happy for you and Kento,” Shoko said happily. “You became one of my best friends here.”
“You have, too. Both you and Haibara…” You smiled. “Even Kento.” Shoko excitedly sat up straighter.
“Okay, Kento loves romance. If you want to clarify this relationship, you should go out of your way to make it special.” You blushed.
“Oh, come on! Don’t tell me you never seen those cheesy romance stuff where the couple shows off how much they adore each other?!”
“I did. I never had to do it for someone else before.”
“Well, maybe fluff it up a bit from your favorite thing that you’ve done.” You blushed…hard. Shoko noticed. She leaned in closer and whispered, “wait, what was it?”
You thought back, almost like it was yesterday. Your fiancé had a long night of work. Right in the middle of preparing your apartment, he called you to give you a heads up that he was arriving home late. He knew you were upset and you knew that he was too.
“I’ll make it up to you, my love. I know it’s our anniversary, too. And it pains me that I have to do this,” he said.
“I know, Ken,” you said. “It’s not the end of the world. We have until you get home, the day after that, and after that.” Nanami chuckled softly on the other line. His chuckle erupted butterflies in your stomach. Ten years of knowing the man, the butterflies never went away.
“I love you so much, my love. You’re the best thing that has ever happened to me.”
“You know that you make my life a hundred times better.”
“I love you, sweetheart. I have to start this meeting. Don’t wait up for me, okay?”
Nanami groaned when he entered the apartment. He removed his shoes and loosened his tie before removing his suit jacket. Nanami placed his messenger bag on the floor before walking inside. His eyes widened.
Rose petals were scattered in the living room. Red balloons scattered throughout the apartment. The fire place was on and he noticed two plates filled with food on the table. Two wine glasses and a bucket of ice with a bottle inside rested on the floor. A heart-shaped cake sat between the two plates. A few candles were lit up in the living room, bringing in a romantic ambiance. And the couch, he found you curled up in a ball, wearing a new red, silky nightgown that hugged your body.
“Sweetheart?” he called softly, his hands gently rubbing your arm. You moaned softly and tiredly and opened your eyes. You smiled.
“Happy anniversary, Ken,” you said softly. Nanami chuckled and kissed you softly.
“You didn’t have to do this,” he said. Slowly, you sat up. Nanami brought you on his lap and wrapped his arms tightly around your waist. He peppered soft kisses on your bare shoulders.
“I-I know,” you said. “I just wanted to show you how much I love you. And I fell asleep.” Nanami chuckled. His fingers rested on your chin and then kissed you tenderly.
“I love you. I love it. And I love you.” You turned around, straddling on his lap before kissing him passionately. Your fingers fumbled with the buttons on his shirts while his wander all over your body before stripping you bare.
“Cute. Sexy. Hot. Damn. I want that,” Shoko said and you laughed. “What? damn! Kento, you lucky bastard.”
“He would love that! All of it!”
“I’m not going to ‘re-enact’ what I did for my dead fiancé to Kento.”
“Well, what do you think Kento would like? Wait, when is he coming back?”
“He flew to Texas.” You snapped your fingers. “I got it. It’s simple and…simple but he wouldn’t expect it from me anyway. Kind of similar but it’s not extravagant.”
“Okay, okay. Fill me in.”
Kento pulled up to his driveway. Once he parked, he smiled to see your porch light on. Exiting the car, he strode straight to your house. He opened the front door, but he can immediately tell that you weren’t home. Your car was in the driveway and the door was unlocked. He was sure that you were home.
He called your cellphone, but immediately heard your phone inside. He followed the noise to the kitchen, where it was also empty. The kitchen was messy with flour, dough, and used utensils piled in the sink. Kento looked around your house, but every room was empty even your bedroom. He sighed heavily when he sat down on your bed.
“Maybe she’s with Shoko and she was in a rush,” he told himself. He laid down, arms crossed behind his head as he stared at your ceiling. He then looked around your room. A wall shelf to his right filled with books and cookbooks, in front of him was your dresser filled with make up and hair products. He looked at each nightstand. Both have a lamp to give extra light in the room, the one close to him had half a cup of drank water and a phone charger. He scooted to the other side where two pictures sitting on top of it. He found a picture of you, Gojo, and Geto. You were in the middle, Geto’s arm was wrapped around your shoulders, and Gojo’s hand was on your head. You were laughing in the picture while the two looked at the camera with big smiles. The other picture was with you and Nanami. He carried you on his back, the two of you looking at each other. He can see the love that the both of you had for each other. He can feel his insecurity grow again. Slowly, he put the picture down and shook the feeling away. He sighed deeply and closed his eyes, waiting for you to arrive home.
It wasn’t long that he waited. He listened to your soft footsteps walk upstairs and into the hallway. He opened his eyes and he smiled to see you walking slowly inside your bedroom.
“W-Were you going to wait for me?” you asked curiously.
“You make it seem like you had other plans for tonight,” he said.
“I-I do,” you answered. Kento stood up and walk to you. He hugged you tightly before pressing his lips against yours. He hummed softly in the kiss and smiled.
“I missed you,” he said. “You left your phone. I had to wait for you.”
“You could’ve waited at home.” He shook his head and hugged you. His arm wrapped around your waist while his other hand rested on the back of your head as you rested on his chest.
“Can’t stop thinking about you,” he said. “I needed to see you first.” He felt relieved when you hugged him back.
“I missed you so much. Come with me. I have something to show you.” Kento nodded. He let go of you and you held his hand, leading the two of you out of the house.
“Are we going to my house?” he asked with a chuckle.
“Yeah! Haibara says that you keep a spare under the cushion of your swinging chair,” you said. “Pretty genius. Better than the welcome mat.” Kento chuckled. He reached for the doorknob, opening the door and gesturing you to go inside first. You removed your sandals and held his hand again. “Close your eyes.” He did what you told him and let you guide him in his home. He felt you stop. “Now open!”
He opened his eyes. Kento’s eyes widened at the scene. Two tall candlesticks were lit on the kitchen island. A small cake sat between the candles. Two plates filled with his favorite food he gets for takeout were in front of two of the bar chairs. There was a glass of whiskey and a glass of wine. On the stove, he can see freshly baked sourdough bread. He looked at you and you blushed.
“You did all this?” he asked. You nodded shyly.
“Surprise,” you said very, very shyly. Kento’s finger and thumb rested on your chin, raising it up so you would look at him. He needs to see your eyes. See what you were feeling. “I-I figured I should surprise my boyfriend.”
“Boyfriend, huh?” he asked, his tone filled with some playfulness. “I’m a lucky man to have a girlfriend like you.” You smiled widely.
“Of course. This is wonderful.”
“I was hoping you would like it. I was nervous.” Kento chuckled and held your hand, leading you to the table. He pulled your chair and you thanked him as you sat down.
“Anything from you, I will like,” he said smoothly. He looked at the plate and smiled. “Did you make it?”
“No, it’s take out. I was busy sending out orders and didn’t have time for the dinner portion of the surprise.” Kento laughed lightly. He kissed you softly on the lips before holding both your hands. His thumbs circled the back of your hands and knuckles. He loves the feeling of your skin. He loves the softness and the warmth. He looked at your hands and his eyes widened.
“What happened to your ring?” he asked curiously.
“Well, I can’t wear my engagement ring that was given to me from my dead fiancé who looks like my boyfriend,” you said a little playfully. You tried to, but the look in Kento’s eyes made you solemn. “I don’t want you to think I want to be with you because you remind me of Nanami.”
“The guys call him by his last name. Satoru goes by ‘Nanamin’ but—that’s not really the point.” You cleared your throat and squeezed his hands. “There’s more to tell you about me and when I do, Nanami is going to be mentioned a lot because he has been by my side since I moved to Tokyo. Eventually, I’ll tell you more about my life and how Sugu, Toru, and Nananmi helped me through it. And Haibara and Shoko might’ve told me how insecure you feel sometimes when you look at the ring.”
“Ah, those two bastards,” he mumbled yet smiled through his statement. “I do though.”
“And I get it. I would too if the situation was reversed. But, when I’m with you, I’m not with my fiancé. I’m with Kento Nanami. Cowboy. Professional bull rider. Sweet, sweet chivalrous man that makes so much time for me when I think he has no time but makes it anyway. You, Kento, make me feel so free and happy. I moved on without fully realizing it. I want to be with you because you are you. And you chose to like a city girl that stands out in a small town.”
“I’m a lucky man,” he said. “You stand out because you’re your own person. You don’t change to fit in, and I love that about you. It’s an honor to be with a sweet, lovable, and creative woman like you. I wouldn’t change it for the world.”
