「MUSE PREFERENCES」

     Well, it’s been quite a year hasn’t it! 

     I’ve dealt with a lot of personal issues and gone through some really hard stuff. There’s been a lot of rough days and nights that have kept me away from this blog for longer than I hoped for, but in no way do I plan on letting Dirk go! I’ve been trying to take care of myself and heal from these things, and I feel like I’m getting there. Enough to do a few posts every now and again!

     I’m excited to see where I can take Dirk from here, so thank you for your patience in me. Feel free to follow me on twitter and keep in contact! I’m very much so more active there than I am here.

“Oh.”

You’ve heard about this, about people leaving and coming back and losing things they had. Memories are cheap here, even cheaper than words.

All that matters is he doesn’t know anything - doesn’t know about the things you built… and the things you both destroyed. Nothing.

If you walk away now, maybe he never will. 

“Well, uh… don’t sweat it.” You wave a hand halfheartedly. “Sorry. Forget I said anything.”

Sighing, you roll your shoulders and step toward the machine. “Esperanza - Psychic, if ya don’t mind.”

Esperanza nods, pattering in front of you. 

As her eyes glow, so does the trapped snack. It slides off the rack with ease, landing in the tray. She glances back at you - you give her a nod, and three more snacks slip off for the taking.

Not the most honest thing to do, but you guys have done worse to survive.

“You can keep ‘em.”

     It makes you uneasy, the way disappointment hangs in the air as it does. Perhaps what makes you even more uneasy is the way that you wish you can remember the former life you have apparently lived, and which this guy apparently knew. Just like with your own brother, you aren’t the right version of anything.

     You don’t forget about the snacks made newly available, but you willfully ignore them and turn your attention to him completely. You don’t owe him anything — not the you that you are, but another Dirk owes him. And in another way that reminds you of your family, you can’t step aside knowing that.

       Getting ready for settings like these never takes him very long ( it’s easily enough, something that he’s more or less used to, considering events held within his family and outside of it, considering his status. ) He’s groomed up long before his company ever actually arrives, so it takes only a few moments for him to answer the door to the one waiting just outside.

❝ Senpai, ❞ he looks better in his own suit than Tsukasa anticipated, but it’s a pleasant surprise nonetheless, and it brings a gentle smile to his face, ❝ You look nice. It fits well, was that personally tailored? ❞

        Regardless of how he got it exactly, it’s a perfect fit. ❝ Let’s get going. ❞

     DIRK: I received some help from a friend, yes.      DIRK: I’m glad you noticed.      DIRK: You look nice as well. Have you done this often?

     You take lead by a small amount, wanting to walk by his side as long as you are able. It wouldn’t be a far walk, but you’re happy with whatever time you get. The hype of the night is enough for you to live without sweaty palms, for now, though you aren't exactly sure how long you'll be able to keep your mind at ease. ( Those goddamn butterflies. ) 

      It is a funny thing that he should mention the past. You have been avoiding it all night– actually, you have been avoiding it since you decided what to wear– but out in the chill, your mind is startlingly clear and focused on the last time you attended one of these celebrations. So really, you are glad for the interruption, though the slightly red sheen over your eyes from the unshed tears is obvious to anyone who knows what to look for.            “Oh, you do not have to worry about that! At least, not if you mean date in the sense of a plus-one and not a point in time! I do not have one!” The cheer in your voice is as carefully meted as ever, and you turn your attention back to the sky, mindful of the snowflakes landing on the long, scarlet sweep of your lashes, legs swinging back and forth as you adjust your perch on the rail.

          “What about you? Will your companion not miss you?”

     It occurs to you that you’ve walked into something nostalgic of the highest degree; a kind of memorable sadness which you’ve only felt in your moments alone. Out on this balcony without another to disturb it, the mind opens a time capsule, and you’re not sure whether or not this one is better left closed. Either way, you’re not sure how to confront it directly since you’ve noticed it, or even if you should. Some things were better left unsaid, weren’t they?

     Well, that, and you’ve always been bad at confronting your feelings with words.

Merry Christmas, Dirk! i know you are not from a very cold climate so i figured these would help!

It’s not much, she thinks, but even a Strider needs something to keep from catching his death in this weather. 

     You’re a young man for the practical, truly.

     In a second, you’ve donned the hat and jacket. Lately it’s been colder than you ever imagined it could be; such a gift, even if you got it a day late as per your own faults as a human being, is highly appreciated.

     You never knew him well, but you could understand why your bro would be friends with a guy like this. The note itself felt homely, and strangely comforting, even though you’ve only me the kid once.

     You’ve been keeping to yourself recently. 

     You’ll worry people like that, won’t you? They’ve been waiting for you to come out of your hole for what seems like weeks; mourning waxes and wanes. Just when you’re convinced you can face the world, you realize that you cannot, and it all comes crashing down again.

     But you’re back on the streets yet again. You’re responding to your calls and texts, doing more than waking up and simply existing. For however long it lasts, you want to see your friends again. It took you weeks to realize how lonely you were. Not even a lifetime of living by yourself could prepare for it.

     You haven’t seen the sun in a hot, hot minute.

     If it wasn’t for your quick reflexes, you’d be in a much worse position than now. A drink in your hand threatens to fling itself out of your grip and onto a nearby young lady as someone bumps into you through the crowd; you succeed in turning away from her just in time, sparing her from the impending spill, and yet still manage to bump into her in turn.

     DIRK: Sorry for that.      DIRK: None of it got on you, right?

     There are many faces among the crowd that you recognize — a side affect of being here for nearly two months. Even if you were mere acquaintances, the ball felt more familiar than you expected it to. 

     And then it felt too familiar. But an annoyance wasn’t grounds for hostility tonight. Thanks to a number of factors, you find that you’re in a surprisingly amicable mood.

     DIRK: I wasn’t aware that a formal event was up your alley.      DIRK: I’ll keep myself from being too shocked when you unveil the      hot date hiding near the punch bo-      DIRK: Are you wearing heels.

     He’s quite large in this crowd; you swear you’ve seen a more hulking version roaming the city streets before, but you can’t be certain. Since they confiscated your weapons at the door, you only feel a slight twinge of caution — something gives you a vibe teetering on the side of bad. But, this is an event hosted in good cheer. You suppose even a shadow seeks a jubilant night.

     DIRK: Hm? You seem familiar.      DIRK: Have we met before?

     You’ve seen him standing there all night, and part of you feels kind of bad. With everyone else lost in dance, lost in festivities, lost in their dates, you feel something strange for the staff. The security, the caterers — partial pity, partial gratitude. You take it upon yourself to start conversation as you break for a snack.

     DIRK: Looks like this is going down as party of the year.      DIRK: It’s astonishing for a crowd this size to keep the chandeliers      and glass plates intact.

     Days of failed attempts leave you exponentially frustrated, exponentially worried for the general health of your personal employer. Each passing day made the uneasy feeling in your throat worsen; sure, perhaps you had too many reminders of the unread texts and ignored phone calls of certain other people better left in your past, but you did in fact care for Eridan’s health. It was more than anxiety-ridden memoirs. Something didn’t sit right with you, and in all of your experience in dealing with the uneasy, your best guess turned out to be correct, more often than not.

     Needless to say, you pick up the phone after half of a ring. You’ve been waiting for it to go off.

     Somehow, the words he relays don’t release any tension at all.

     DIRK: Things that are fair to me end up factoring into the negatives.      DIRK: What the fuck happened? Sounds like you can’t even think      straight.       DIRK: Don’t bullshit me, either. 

     You almost say aloud that you don’t get the same vibes as a boyfriend who needs his space, but luckily, you refrain from the paragraph-long metaphor that would have been sure to thoroughly embarrass you in the long run.

“You, look familiar, ya know t)(at?” 

A little bit cheeky, Feferi offers a toothy grin to the fellow she’s approached, head tilted as she tries to place just what’s kicking off that stubborn feeling of familiarity. It’s annoying, she finds, not knowing exactly what is itching at her. 

     He can’t say that her voice is particularly familiar, but he’d know the horns from anywhere ( is that offensive to say? You’ll keep your mouth shut about that particular detail just in case ). She bears a striking resemblance to a certain other Baroness, but you’d prefer not to say that aloud either. This young gal seems nice enough for you to feel a slight bit guilty comparing the two.

      “Dirk hello!” You have been looking for him snce you stepped foot into the party, for one reason and one reason only. The Ouija, sensing your eagerness, spells out ‘gift’ in the air over your head, dropping the neatly-ordered bag into your hands. From its depths, you pull a crown, and plop it gently on his head. “Happy wriggling day! Or, um– birthday, I guess!”            Then you hold out the bag, beaming.            “It is not much, but I hope you like your gift!”

     Once again, something warm manifests in your chest at the gesture of someone remembering the date of your birth. It wasn’t as if the day went without celebration in the past, but something about it here was different. A little more lonely, and yet at the same time, a little more whimsical. ( The friends you make here are no less your friends, ) a small voice urges to you. ( There’s something beautifully hopeful in that. )

     DIRK: Thank you, Aradia.      DIRK: I’ll trust that you know I’m not a political prince, and that      the crown is an adornment to accompany the day.      DIRK: It’s all majestic as fuck, unnecessary as it was.

     You take the ( bomb ass ) headphones out of their bag and let them hang around your neck; though they’re slightly out of place with your suit, it keeps up the cool kid vibe. You appreciate that.
