I am now a painter as well as a poet, actor, and America's First and Only Zombie(Z) Party candidate. I painted Oprah Winfrey's Pussy. It too...
My most popular blog ever. And the dumbest.
The Rockford Poetry Files, Night Two
While my burrito cools down in the microwave and I watch the first of two episodes of Barney Miller on AntennaTV, Iāve decided maybe at this time each night Iāll just do a free write at one of these twenty or so ridiculous blogs. Like someone elseās house, this was once someone elseās blog. No idea who Tigerkitty was.Ā
Maybe Iāll call the nightly free write The Rockford Poetry Files. Seems like I already am. I have two projects in the fire right now: one facetious, and the other deadly serious. The facetious project is The Outsider Poetry Slam League of America, or OPSLA. Iāve changed the acronym now seven or eight times, which might be a good indicator of why Google has no idea what Iām talking about. Today I created a team for Rockford called The Rockford Pages, a takeoff on The Rockford Peaches immortalized in the movie A League of Their Own. I guess I created a mythical league of their own for fictional Rockford slam poets.
The more serious project is the book The Blood Dark Sea by Outlaw Poet Dennis Gulling. I was doing some final edits on the book late last night, and I looked outside the window and the moon was huge and orange over the Old City Hall Building.Ā
It looks like that, except my view is from the back side where my apartment is. The moon was right over the building for a few minutes, but sunk very fast when I noticed. At one time I almost got an apartment in the building, but I really wanted one of the basement apartments that had been the city jail a century ago.Ā
That is the type of imagery replete in the book, which I just signed an estimate form for today. The files might be sent off to the printer as early as next week. Interesting. I just noticed the buildings behind Ā and next to Old City Hall in this postcard are no longer there. Also, people tend to not ride around in buggies anymore.Ā
Calvin Trillin and Charles Grodin on Johnny Carson tonight, which should be a real wit fest. I remember when Grodin was initially promoting the book heāll be on the show talking about tonight, It Would Be So Nice If You Werenāt There. I always thought that was a funny title. At midnight (9 minutes) Iāll watch The Rockford Files, which Iām really getting into, then that Carson show, and maybe go to bed early, if you call 2 a.m. early.
Unless that moon is out again even bigger and more orange.Ā
Of course Iām sixty-five words away from 500 here, so maybe Iāll stick it out. Iāve seen all of these episodes of Barney Miller before, and Iām starting to wonder if they show the same episodes because of clearances in syndication. I wonder if they get the full slate of shows to broadcast in any order they wish, or if for some reason certain episodes they just donāt get in their syndication package. For instance, theyāre showing The Incredible Hulk from episode one. I missed all but the ending last Saturday, but I wonāt make that mistake again tomorrow night. Maybe me and Jack will watch.Ā

Outlaw Poetry From Americaās Third Most Dangerous Neighborhood
After a brief rain shower here in Rockford, Americaās third most violent city, it is easy to imagine maybe some of the hatred and angry has been washed away by the rain, and weāll be in for a peaceful, uneventful night, but anyone who lives here knows better.
In a place like this it seems like bad taste to promote something called Outlaw Poetry. Weāre surrounded by Outlaws. Even the politicians are Outlaws. Hell, Outlaw Poetry really got itās start here when English teacher Todd Moore co-founded the movement with Tony Moffeit. I read with Todd Moore several times, including once in a basement in Stillman Valley. Lyn Lifshin was also at that reading, which occurred in the editor of Kumquat Meringueās basement.Ā
I receive a fair amount of what I consider Outlaw Poetry at Zombie Logic Review, and I publish most of it because it just seems to have an attitude that is interesting, even if I find the street cred of those writing it rather lacking.Ā
Living now for six years in what started as the sixth most dangerous neighborhood in America, and is now the third, I tend not to root for Outlaws. It doesnāt give me any more street cred as a publisher that my press sits in the heart of one of the most dangerous neighborhoods in America, but it also doesnāt endear an Outlaw mentality to me that I canāt walk to the dumpster without checking over my shoulder every few steps.Ā
Do I consider myself an Outlaw Poet? Not really, because Iāve never been inside society enough to consider living Outside it. Iām an Outsider Poet, and I really never have felt I had any choice in being so. I donāt poo poo those who feel they want to make a spectacle of acting out, but I see way too much of it everyday, and itās far from romantic. Violence is a terrifying and spirit-crushing thing.Ā

Outlaw Poetry From Rockford, Illinois
The idea of Outlaw Poetry in Rockford, Illinois, seems like a redundancy. We are now Americaās second most dangerous, third most violent city. I could walk outside my door and get punched in the face right now, gangs rule the streets, the politicians are in cahoots with every criminal enterprise from here to Cucamonga, and everyone has a chip on their shoulder about it.Ā
Iāve only ever tangentially considered myself a fan or participant in Outlaw Poetry, and thatās mostly because I identify with a lot of the poets in The Outlaw Bible of American Poetry and other anthologies and websites that aggregate the work of outlaws. I think Bob Dylan once said something likeĀ āIn order to be an outlaw one has to be honest,ā and thatās part of the rub for me. I donāt always like honesty in my writing. I reserve the right to not tell it like it is.Ā
At Zombie Logic Review I have received poetry from a lot of self-identified Outlaw Poets, and in general I enjoy itās attitude and energy, so I publish it. I probably will in the future, also.Ā
The Outlaw Bible of American Poetry, edited by S.A. Griffin and Alan Kaufmann. My association with Outlaw Poetry is strengthened by having lived near Todd Moore, the first Outlaw Poet, famous for his epic poem about Dillinger, for many years. I read with him on many occasions, and he was one of the first poets to give me positive feedback and encouragement on my work. However, Iāve never thought of my poetry as Outlaw poetry. I just donāt really enjoy crime, violence, guns, seedy behavior, drugs, or blood. The greatest F U one can give to The Man in my opinion is just to live a virtuous life and stay free of these types of entanglements. I certainly had my encounters with all of these things during my fifteen years in the service industry, and my book Flesh Wounds deals with the things that happened to me during these years, but I always felt better when I avoided it.
I will be publishing a book of Outlaw Poetry by Dennis Gulling at Zombie Logic Press later this year. Until then my focus will be primarily on Outsider Poetry and staying out of trouble here in the second most dangerous city in America.
Outlaw Poetry
āI Almost Quitā by Thomas L. Vaultonburg
RIP James Tate
Ā Pulitzer Prize-winning poet John Tate passed on this kind of 7 days, right before the book involving their brand-new e-book, Dome from the Concealed Pavilion. They seemed to be 71, in addition to the most well-known poets involving their age group, favorite all the by means of viewers, that present in their perform a more offered in addition to amusing version involving poetry, as by means of fellow-poets, with non-stop imitated their fashion for many years.Tate seemed to be productive ā it is their 17th full-length selection, in addition to incidentally, the 6th to outsource to the "X from the Y" formulation for the subject (earlier iterations add the National Book Award-winning Worshipful Corporation involving Fletchers, Memoir from the Hawk in addition to Return to town involving Light Donkeys). When i refer to this kind of pattern since Tate is usually a leading illustration of a poet who has used deep groves with their mental walkways ā their poems are generally generally identical to each other, usually interesting in addition to surreal, in addition to usually amusing in addition to mysteriously miserable ā without having stomping lifespan away from their creativity.Any Tate composition typically comes with a hapless protagonist (usually some sort of well-meaning man) that stumbles straight into a few absurd instances in which however are not appearing especially absurd to help him. This strengthen is airy, bemused ā "Some factors will not deserve to be contemplated" ā camouflaging profundity beneath some sort of peaceful surface area. This specific male might meet up with a number of townsfolk, every one of to whom will make a few statement around the circumstance, which will get weirder with each and every statement, then the composition after that concludes that has a brilliant zinger. Normally, the actions converts about escalating connection issues. Tate would be the simply poet as their principal subject is the main benefit of uncertainty.Similar with articles in addition to style (silly scenarios toss with long-lined columns) to help the previous few, this kind of brand-new selection displays the trail finish of a slower progress that's been going on with Tate's help ages: They started their job with skinny, shapely lyrics, similar to their celebrated elegy intended for their dad, "The Missing Pilot, inch that displays an intimate, typically critical, pretty much confessional tone of voice. By these first-person poems in relation to stuffs that occurred towards poems' sound system, Tate crafted a variety of his own around 3 ages ā the long-lined, small-town fables that contain addicted him because 1990s in addition to picked up him an extensive audience.Enjoying him figure out the important points of the tiny reports is tasty, and the important points in which maintain them feeling clean, irrespective of what might seem just like a solution. Take a brand-new composition with regards to a male that need to material their mother-in-law, who has "grown being unfaithful ft extra tall, in addition to her/ deal with is all contorted" into the backseat involving their vehicle. The event:seemed to be really an tribulation. Your womanhad to sleep the night then we loaded the woman hip and legs almost up tothe woman chin. Her mother seemed to be screaming in addition to flinging with us. inchTate genuinely lets us get pleasure from the landscape just like a veteran amusing making towards punchline, however with a certain amount of something diffrent, far too, some sort of mischievous faithfulness to help reality, that, after all, is this kind of interesting in addition to miserable: several mothers-in-law occupy greater than their particular reveal involving living space. And yet, there exists love put together with, usually. This lumbering, clumsy, in addition to damned are generally Tate's pals.Another thing to notice this can be a series breaks: they are quite irrelavent ā closing the 1st a pair of outlines above with "She" in addition to "up to" will not help to make the packets involving believed any further substantial. It's almost like outsider poet Tate really wants to point out to us in which, however that appears in addition to works similar to prose, we've been in the composition here. Along with which might be essentially the most precious in addition to important issue in which Tate possesses attained with this past due perform: to help redefine the lyric composition being a linguistic community in which story, hilarity, in addition to new music get equal payments.Tate will likely be a lot skipped, however their have an effect on about youthful poets is everlasting. Their seemed to be a consistent reminder in which poetry need to deliver happiness together with ease and comfort, understanding, brains in addition to empathy. May perhaps below intended for him possibly be as weird in addition to nice as the landscape with their brand-new composition, "The Afterlife, inch when a lifeless male ā some sort of blurry ā falls into the speaker's yard:I just driftaround, inch he claimed. "Well, We've never ever met some sort of lifeless male. Now i'mvery happy to meet up with you, inch When i claimed. "I imagine you might be meant toholler or maybe something, inch he claimed. "Oh zero, Now i'm genuinely thrilled, inchWhen i claimed. "It's genuinely style of that you visit. inch "I did notvisit. It was the wind flow, inch he claimed. "And then this wind flow stoppedin addition to When i fell into the tree. inch "How lucky to me, inch When i claimed. "You'llpossibly be selecting us, needless to say, after i abandon. You'll never possibly befinding its way back, inch he claimed.
Zombie Logic Press To Publish Memoir By Dr. Millard Rausch
Americaās most dangerous literary press, according to NPR, is at it again, dropping the bombshell in a press release this week that they will be publishing a memoir by Dr. Millard Rausch, the fictional eye-patch wearing scientist from George A. Romeroās zombie movie Dawn of the Dead.Ā
Zombie Logic has a reputation as a maverick enterprise, publishing books by Outsider Poets, rogue political candidates, and miscreants of all stripes, including Green Party candidate for mayor and the greatest dishwasher in the world, Jesus Correa.Ā
In business since the release of Detached Retinas by Thomas L. Vaultonburg in 1997, Zombie Logic has been in continuous operation now longer than any literary press in Rockford, and longer than most in the Midwest. Attempts to cow the firebrand publisher have been extinguished for nearly two decades now, and the work goes on in full force. Future releases include noir poet Dennis Gulling, Chapman Lad David Pedersen, and a book by legendary Northern Illinois rocker Michael Whyte.Ā
The book by Dr. Millard Rausch purportedly will contain details about his stint as President Gerald Fordās private physician, the founding of The Hall of Bad Dudes with Dr. Henry Wolfsburg, and the time he banged your momma.Ā
What Happened To Dr. Millard Rausch After Dawn of the Dead?
Many of you have been wondering whatever happened to Dr. Millard Rausch after he appeared at WGON studios in Dawn of the Dead. Did he survive the early waves of the Zombie Apocalypse? Did he simply remain at the WGON studios forever?Ā
Zombie Logic reporter Thomas L. Vaultonburg has gotten the exclusive story after interviewing Dr. Millard Rausch himself. It turns out that shortly after the city of Pittsburgh was overrun by zombies, Dr. Rausch escaped on a small private plane and went to Vermont, where he met up with several other intellectuals at a compound they had jointly built after the first Zombie Outbreak of 1968. Many of those experts were asked to join the scientific team that was portrayed in the film Day of the Dead, but all passed on the invitation.Ā
The members of the compound eventually came to refer to themselves as The Hall of Bad Dudes embracing the double meaning that they were the only ones bad enough to survive the Zombie Apocalypse of 1978 and that they were probably damned to hell for not sharing their expertise to help others to survive.Ā
Rumors that Dr. Rausch returned to the Florida State University are false. His friend and colleague, Dr. Henry Wolfsburg, presided over his wedding to fellow scientist and supermodel Vanessa Vandenhovel in 1981. It is estimated, but never confirmed, that the population at Camp Zombie Logic eventually reached 150 individuals, each an expert in his or her own field of study. several times the camp was quickly and successfully defended against marauding bands of survivors, even privately funded small armies on behalf of government officials and wealthy individuals who knew about the existence of the camp.Ā
Dr. Millard Rausch came out of seclusion last week to appear on the Dummy and Dippy morning show where he appeared to not have aged a day since 1978. His buddy, Dr. henry Wolfsburg went on to found Zombiethong and judge an annual zombie bikini contest.Ā
