In Rare Sea Snail, Scientists Find Compound That Could Help Cancer Patients
âFrank Oakes is betting his future on a snail. Thousands are suctioned onto the walls of 19 outdoor aquaculture tanks behind his office in Port Hueneme, California, south of Santa Barbara.
Shaped like oblong cinnamon rolls, the black, tan, and striped snails may live up to 60 years, although their population may be dwindling.
âThis fragile California resource could be the basis of multiple life-saving drugs,â said Oakes, who is the CEO of Stellar Biotechnologies Inc., a biomedical company.â

Hey, is that a penguin on your pumpkin? We created five great sea creature stencils to use this Halloween, including a penguin, seahorse, sea turtle and hammerhead shark. Print one and give it a try!
There is also a death for the immortal jellyfish. He is very bored.

Thatâs a good glyptodon!
Image from Catalogue of casts of fossils, from the principal museums of Europe and America, with short descriptions and illustrations (1866)
Despite the dinosaur-like appearance of itâs fossil skeleton, glyptodon was a relative of the modern armadillo that lived in the Pleistocene and became extinct around 10,000 years ago.

Gaze In Wonder at the Best Astronomy Photographs of the Year
âA total solar eclipse is one of natureâs greatest spectacles so it is no wonder that many people will go to extreme lengths just to experience one. Down on the ground the period of totality, when the Moon completely blocks the Sun, lasts for just a few minutes. Bad weather can completely wreck your chances of seeing it. This is where a plane can come in handy: you can fly above the clouds and chase the Moonâs shadow as it races across the Earth.â

Named after Mick Jagger for its luscious lips, Jaggermeryx naida was neither hippo nor swamp pig. More like a weirdly long-legged, horse-faced... hippo-pig... thing.
It was a species of anthracothere, a group of critters that lived between 56 and 2.6 million years ago. As a group, they were relatively close to the ancestors of modern hippos and whales.
Read more here; scientific paper here. Many thanks to Ellen Miller and Gregg Gunnell, two of the scientists who published J. naida, for "peer reviewing" this cartoon :)

The Last Summer âSupermoonâ Of 2014 Is Also A Harvest Moon
âSkywatchers, youâre in for a treat. Tonightâs âsupermoonâ is a pretty special one.
When the moon turns full on Monday, Sept. 8 at 9:38 p.m. EDT, it not only will become the last supermoon of the summer, but also this yearâs Harvest Moon â which is a full moon that occurs closest to the autumnal equinox.â
