Metawork Terminology Series: [ Energy Work ] [ Spirit Work ]
These definitions are not put forward as the only possible meanings, they are simply based on my own experiences and personal definitions. Like my other two posts, there are no citations because these definitions are based on my own experiences and may or may not describe the experiences of others.
Astral - Of or relating to astral space, astral energy, or astral bodies.
Astral energy - The energy within astral space or an astral body.
Astral space - Layers of existence composed entirely of energy that exist in parallel to or on top of but distinct from the known physical universe.
Astral planes - Planes of existence on various dimensions that are composed of astral space. One astral plane is roughly analogous to a universe, and collectively the astral planes could be thought of as comparable to a multiverse.
Astral realm - A large and distinct section of an astral plane, comparable to a planet (or even larger depending on the realm).
Astral copy of the physical plane - There is an astral plane that co-exists with the physical plane of our known universe. Astral traveling to the physical plane’s astral copy is different from astral projecting within the physical plane itself.
Astral portal - An energy center in astral space (and occasionally on the physical plane) that can facilitate astral travel from one location to another.
Astral signature - Like an energy signature, an astral signature is the specific energy or “GPS” of a particular location within an astral realm.
Astral body - An outward manifestation of an entity’s energy signature that is composed of astral energy. The astral body is intertwined with its entity’s energy body, which usually mostly exists in the interior of the astral body.
Unlike a physical body, an astral body often reflects the characteristics of an entity’s past lives. An entity may have more than one astral body and/or have some degree of control over how their astral body manifests.
Astral form - The visual appearance of one’s manifested astral body (as opposed to another astral body not being used at the time).
Shapeshifting - Altering parts or the entirety of one’s astral form.
Astral senses - The ways in one can perceive astral space. People experience astral space differently. Some are only able to hear, some can see and hear, etc.
Astral bonds - An energy tether made of astral energy that connects astral bodies to each other or an astral body to an astral realm. Astral bonds tend to exist very strongly between entities and places with close relationships or related lifetimes such as twin flames.
Metawork - The practice and discipline of the three highly interrelated fields of energy work, spirit work, and astral work.
Astral work - The practice and discipline of sensing, interacting with, or manipulating astral energy, astral space, or astral bodies. A sub-field of metawork. This is not necessarily a type of witchcraft, but can be referred to as witchcraft when astral work is incorporated into someone’s witchcraft practice. Closely associated with hedge craft. Many other types of magical traditions that are not forms of witchcraft also include astral work.
Trancework - The practice and discipline of entering a trance state. I find that to astral travel or project, I must enter a light to medium trance. For journeying, I enter a deep trance state.
Astral travel - The act of moving through astral space, usually to specific locations in various astral realms, using one’s astral body. When astral traveling (sometimes called “astralling”), the physical body and astral body do not necessarily separate because many of the astral planes lie on different dimensions and do not exist relative to our physical plane in terms of location.
Astral projection - The act of separating one’s astral body from one’s physical body and independently directing one’s astral body somewhere. Typically astral projection is harder to achieve than astral traveling and is used to project oneself somewhere in the physical universe rather than on the astral planes.
OBE - An “Out of Body Experience” where one experiences a complete break in consciousness from one’s physical body. Some people experience an OBE while astral projecting while others do not.
Journeying - A way of moving through and interacting with astral space that is completely different from astral projection and astral travel. Some say that journeying does not even occur in astral space at all. Usually accessed through a deep trance state, during a journey one does not have full control over where the astral body is taken or what one experiences. Ancestral and guardian spirits are often encountered during journeys and lead the way.
Bilocating - Astral traveling or astral projecting while also maintaining independent control over one’s physical body. It is difficult to learn to bilocate while astral traveling and almost impossible while projecting.
Astral reading - Using one’s astral senses to gather information and/or any kind of divination that relates to astral space, astral bodies, or astral energy.
