Born to The Vipers, Hiltja was the daughter of Lotan, one of the few adherents left of The Great Snake.
Harried and nearly exterminated by The NCR, the last Vipers retreated deep into the frontier to escape. The surviving warbands lost their heritage, losing reverence for The Great Snake that Jonanthan and Asp Faust once taught. Now, they were just petty raiders preying upon caravans and travelers. This was the kind of life Hiltja was born into, desperation and violence.
She found no comfort with her mother.
Lotan was a zealot, harsh and unyielding with her beliefs in The Great Snake. She believed The Vipers were being punished for their lack of faith. Through sermon and fear, she instructed her warband in the rituals to honor the old faith. In this mission, Lotan tolerated no weakness, no doubt or hesitation.
All of which, she saw in her daughter. To this day, Hiltja has the scars from her sermons.
For a time, Hiltja thought she was all alone. She knew running away would just bring her right back to her mother. The others, motivated by fear, would not allow her to escape the cult. Despite her pain, Hiltja became a capable fighter and skilled with a bow. Yet still, all she wanted was just to leave her mother, leave her faith behind.
To leave the pain behind.
She found her chance when a raid went wrong. In the chaos and confusion, Hiltja broke away and retreated into the night leaving The Vipers behind. She ran all night, resting when she needed and resumed running. Just desperate to get as far as she can from Lotan, from The Great Snake. Yet, even in freedom she was still alone.
Hiltja drifted, committing various small petty crimes and hanging around small gangs. Still lost among a world she never meaningfully interacted with. In one encounter near The NCR border, Hiltja ended up injured, with her right hand smashed after a violent altercation with a frontier militia. The injury hasn’t healed properly, leaving her dependent on Med-X and Steady.
Eventually, her dependency led her to The Fiends. Joining was no easy matter, after all there was a price of admission. A price that Hiltja could pay, with someone else’s suffering.
In time, she became trusted by Jackson, a Fiend leader. Trusted as a hunter and scout for the raider leader’s party.
Still, she’s a troubled woman. Struggling with her past and with a bleak future. Wondering whether she actually escaped or just joined something just as bad as Lotan’s cult.
