BACKGROUND :    a survivor of the terragrigia panic in 2004 a young man ends up with exposure to the t-abyss virus, though he is lucky enough to never get fully infected. it is only when another il veltro copycat group gets a hold of him and uses him for experiments on the virus. over and over do they test his immunity to small doses of it thanks to his previous exposure and over and over do they overdo it and have to inject him with an antivirus in order to keep him controllable. it isn't long until they decide to install a device into his arm to inject the antigen into his body whenever t-abyss was about to completely alter his brain functions.

BACKGROUND :    originally the son of two alchemists based in mondstadt “flint” has lost both of his parents during an expedition to dragonspine where they were ambushed by thieves ,  and upon escaping them found themselves trapped in a passageway with two or three ruin guards .   he does not remember much more other than being covered in blood when he stumbles his way into a hilichurl camp .   except they do not attack him ,   not right away anyway .   it’s when he’s well into their camp ,  when he runs right into the back of a napping mitachurl that they finally attack .   in a desperate fit he takes the sword his mother gifted him ,   the one he used to carry only to pridefully display it without properly knowing how to use it and fights .   and it’s with desperate rage ,   a flame fueled by rage and sorrow that drowns out everything else before it engulfs him in a raging inferno  -   and before he knows it or even remembers how it happened he’s found his vision .

mock gasp leaves scarred lips in faux play of shock  at  words spoken once he  registers them properly ;   there’s a mischievous twinkle in his eyes but sterling isn’t one to completely hide how he feels     -     at least not until it is absolutely necessary .   and most of the time there’s no need to be as serious ,  anyways . ❛   language !  ❜          he exclaims in dramatic display of feigned consternation ; mayhaps the world lost an actor on him .  or perhaps not   -  he is having far too much fun being dramatic to take any chance  at a career path like that serious . limb moves to poke at her shoulder as though to underline how appalling words like that were to him ,     except he can’t help but snort a suppressed laugh and  chuckle at that before his hand can even lift .      shifting from sweeping act to a general kind of amusement he offers a raised brow in return ,  as though to add a little insult to his previous statement     ( he’d just been joking she wouldn’t be able to take the jump up the ledge to open the door from the other side ;  he did not expect the day wearing on badly enough to make him sound serious enough to seem insulting )   as though it doesn’t make him feel a little guilty   ( it does )  .

❛   nah ,  seriously you gotta watch your fuckin’ words .  what if there’s kids or something around .       plus ,  unlike you i can’t dig up people’s files so i genuinely wouldn’t know .     though ,  be my guest to prove you’re right .   ❜

gaze does not wander off from ahead of him ;  not when there could be danger still lurking around .   he knows some experiments take to the virus strains harder than him and the handful of others he has remained in contact with - he just feels bad in the face of knowing he’s dragged the zeta soldier with him .    granted ,  it’s not like he did it on purpose  and  it wasn’t like there wasn’t definitely some work issues for either of them involved here ,  but it doesn’t lessen the burden knowing he could be to blame for this .  he knows nothing about how involved the other sterling possibly  is with human experiments like him ;   doesn’t know if he knows how to handle a ... feral one ,  much as he hates that expression .  he’ll definitely know how to take one out but does he know that most of them can return from the dead completely under  the parasites control if there is still blood in their body ?   maybe ,  maybe not .  one of these days he’ll have to ask just so he knows whether or not to feel bad for every time he’s dragged him into a mess like this ,                                       willingly or not .  

❛  it only gets more exciting from here on out ,                                           i fear . ❜ dry response comes quietly ,   barely loud enough for the other to hear .   best not to raise suspicions or alarms either ,   he’s at least smart enough for that himself ,  he’d say .  though the experiment offers a glance towards the soldier at last ,  expression  one that seems akin to confusion ,   perhaps to the situation .   though ,  at least he’s honest on this point ,  it’s mostly just questions about his ( involuntary ? )  companion at this point .                                                          ❛   you ever handle a feral one ?  ❜ he questions with disdain for the very word to describe those like him evident in both voice and expression .   if one day ,  he too ,  were to succumb to the very thing that had been used to torture him ,  to ruin his life ...  would they count him as feral ,  too ?

❛   shh . ❜    response comes quickly with prosthetic index finger raised towards  scarred lips in a hush motion ;   he waits ,  holding up other hand as though he has  heard  something  only to drop  it after a handful  of torturous moments  in  silence .         he’s surprised it’s worked but he assumes it’s because he’s been  pretending to hear danger nearby  -  a bsaa agent was , after all , still someone trained to be on the lookout for danger .  ironic ;  given that technically he is not unlikely to be on their list of “dangerous specimen” or whatever they might have in their databases .    it is not something he would complain about ,   were it not for the fact  he wouldn’t be  on there had  il veltro  never started their ridiculous  scheme of panic .     so he’s surprisingly somber ,   despite hints of clear as day amusement in his voice ,  when he explains .         ❛   i’m enjoying the silence. ❜  

it comes with a deadpan expression ,  as if he’s reciting the weather forecast and has not just been being a little shit on purpose .      he doesn’t wait for a reaction ,  however and instead opts to jump up on top of the ledge leading to what he would assume to be the door to another sector .  better safe than sorry ,  he muses .  not that it is any help to keep his mouth from running anyway ,   finding that he is still , even with the way he acts ,  inclined to agree .       ❛   today’s been shite ,  yeah .  HEY !     you could just quit your job and join my emo band or some shite .   ❜   he’s joking ,   of course .                                                                               partially .

“ i  love  when  people  underestimate  me  and  then  become  pleasantly  surprised . ”

there’s a moment of pause ,         of quietly appraising words long since spoken  he does not entirely know why  people could underestimate anyone nowadays ; especially since you could never be sure of who is who ,        but he opts to stay  quiet on that one and instead offers a small nod ,            ❛   love it when they’re unpleasantly surprised.  ❜         he responds with smothered hints of glee in his voice     -    he remembers the humiliating feeling of being underestimated in the  worst sense and he remembers how thrilling it was to prove everyone wrong . he can’t really imagine what it might feel like for people to be pleased about the stuff he did .   doesn’t want to think about it .  they do not deserve his thoughts ,  and  in return ,  he is not spared the invasive voices of theirs .  he wishes he could be more like this guy ;  at least with the way he thinks .  maybe things would’ve been easier then .     or maybe he was a hopeful fool for dwelling on what-ifs and buts .

there is devious mirth in his voice when he speaks again ,  blatant in the way he is one to appreciate the fine line between friendliness and bastardy  -  one he always manages to trample on by accident every now and then .   well ,  at least he’s a bit more civilized today than yesterday  -  thanks to a lack of sleep maybe ,  or maybe it was the lack of issues arising today .       ❛   ‘s more fun when they’re angry .  ❜
