THS Music Notes

This newly released album of Maroon 5 is more than just pop, more than just a compilation of catchy songs. They have upped it up a bit. Theyre back in the game. After that flop from the previous album, I can confidently say that I am happily listening to their tracks again.

I’ll admit it, I was hesitant to give this album a try due to previous work. I used to view Taylor as this whiny teenager through her shallow songwriting - bashing ex beau to another, repetitive lyrical content, confused with her own message, and eerie “melodic” tunes.

I’ve paraphrased what my band director had told us in response to complaining that there wasn’t enough pictures in the yearbook.

This is raw stuff. Because, as he said, band is paramount in all of students’ memories. Band is “the soundtrack to their high school career.”

November is  here, and we’re continuing 2014 with a jam-packed month of releases that PropertyOfZack team members couldn’t be more stoked to hear. PVRIS - White Noise (11/04) There is no doubt that Boston’s own PVRIS has become a dark horse, and with the release of their debut LP, White Noise, looming on the horizon, they are gearing up for something big. The three singles so far have given us a small taste of what’s to come, which include lots of powerhouse vocals and sonic [yet tastefully done] synth. There is something refreshing about PVRIS’ sound that is modern and stylish, with the perfect amount of grit to set them apart from a generic pop-rock band. My first listen to the title track, right upon its midnight release, left me mesmerized and yearning for more. The only word I could use to describe “St. Patrick,” “My House,” and “White Noise” is arresting – PVRIS commands your attention and keeps it there, the combination of alternating flowing/edgy vocals and well-constructed hooks making it impossible to resist.

After building up their credibility with a stint on Warped and a long run with Mayday Parade and Tonight Alive, White Noise will likely be the break PVRIS needs to take the world by storm (and I can’t wait). - Ashley Aron

Seaway - All In My Dead (11/04)

Seaway’s debut full-length Hoser is full of energetic pop-punk with biting aggression. In their live show and apparently while recording — judging from 2013’s Hoser and past releases — the Canadian five-piece lets all hell break loose in a poised manner, as they skillfully reshape that energy into well-crafted lyrics and instrumentals. When I happened to see them live, I was immediately hooked — from the first high-octane note until the last. Seaway came out swinging, so don’t be surprised if All In My Head, though only four songs long, launches the band ahead in the fight for leading pop-punk band. - Ali Killian

Foo Fighters – Sonic Highways (11/11)

The radio friendly brand of rock the Foo Fighters make can get old easily. Somehow, though, Dave Grohl and his boys refuse to let that happen, and they put out consistent hit after consistent hit. So when they announced they’re putting out a new record, Sonic Highways, obviously I was excited. However, then I learned what makes it so special. It won’t just sound awesome, it’s awesome in a conceptual way as well. It was written in various cities around the country that are all unique parts of American music history, and each song is influenced by those places and the people who make music there. It’s being released alongside an HBO series that explores these places and their music roots.

So not only will this album pack the punch of standard Foo Fighters excellent, it’ll also come fully equipped with some new sounds and influences from around the US. What could be more intriguing than that? (Nothing. The answer is nothing, because this will most likely be one of the best albums to come out this year.) - Marie Scarsella
