gary’s interest in insects is so underlooked and it's actually kind of upsetting. a key component in gary wanting to be a pilot was due to his father, as he looked highly of him and practically wanted to follow in his footsteps, but he also had an interest in bugs. his treehouse had a large poster of different types of bugs on it AND his father gave him a caterpillar knowing full well his son reads up on them before leaving for his mission. gary was never really book smart, but bugs were the reason why he picked up books. he doesn’t know everything about them, but he knows enough to know which ones to avoid and which ones are friendly and how to handle if poisonous bugs infect someone.
