I've been hearing quite a bit about "The Night Circus" by Erin Morganstern recently, so I decided to post a belated review. Also an excuse to use this amazing photo! This novel was so fantastical, and the narration jumped between characters and time so often, that I often didn't follow the plot very closely. My favourite character by far was Bailey, and I wished there was more time spent on him and less time on the magic game, which was not nearly so fierce and intense as the book's description says. Also, as soon as Celia and Marco fell in love, I was rolling my eyes in all of their chapters. It also bothered me when the author began a chapter with "a man walks down the street..." only to continue reading and see that it is a character we already know. "The Country of Marriage," Wendell Berry. Just finished a lovely little book of #poems. Loved this: "So, friends, everyday do something that won't compute. Love the Lord. Love the world. Work for nothing. Take all that you have and be poor. Love someone who does not deserve it."

"The Vacationers," Emma Straub. If you dread going on vacation with your family, read this book and you will probably feel pretty lucky. It's the story of a fairly dysfunctional family on holiday from New York/Florida to Majorca. Many of the characters were very irritating to me, but they were also recognisable- I could think of annoying people very much like those in the book. The teenage girl character actually was my favourite because I expect teenagers to be irritating and self involved. However, the book was not completely horrible. Books about summer vacation are one of my favourite subjects and Straub did a pretty good job of writing about hanging out at the pool and beach with out being boring. Not a very good/a typical portrayal of Americans- makes them seem lazy and culturally ignorant. #summervacation #thevacationers #majorca #katiereads2014

Finished yesterday. "Bedtime Story," Robert J. Wiersema. This was an amazing STORY. It continually baffled me with how much detail there was. Chris Knox has a broken relationship with his wife, and hardly better with his son. Their best father son time together is their nightly bedtime story. When his son David has a mysterious seizure and becomes catatonic, doctors cannot find any answers. But Chris begins to have strong suspicions that his son's condition has something to do with the book he was reading when he had his first seizure. This is also a dual story with the one in the book in question, which is a story in a genre with Lord of the Rings. "The Woefield Poultry Collective" (sometimes "Home to Woefield") by Susan Juby. I loved this book because it is exactly what could go wrong if someone with lots of optimism but not very many skills is given a farm. This is like my dream. "The Guilty," Sean Slater. A detective crime novel set in Vancouver BC! If settings are a factor for you in choosing books, this is a good one if Vancouver (or even, more generally, Canada) is a recognisable place for you. The cops in this novel go to Tim Horton's quite often. Otherwise, this is an action packed, quick moving and intense novel with short chapters. (Which is good because it's 576 pages) When the main detective and his partner are on a routine check of suspicious activity, they suddenly find that it is a case much bigger than they thought- a mysterious serial bomber is making his way around the city, wreaking terror and leaving cryptic signs in his wake. Alternately narrated by the detective and the bomber, it is still very suspenseful and the answers may sneak up on you! #crimenovels #vancouverbc #seanslater #bookstagram #whatshouldireadnext #katiereads2014

"The Gigantic Beard That Was Evil," Stephen Collins. I don't even really know what to make of this book. It's a rhyming graphic poem (I think?!) and it's very fun and ridiculous (sort of what you expect from something with a weird title like this).
