An American Red Cross recruitment poster, 1917. Historians argue that the Red Cross was intimately connected, paradoxically, to militarization. By supporting military health it freed up thousands of soldiers for the front. In 1917 Wisconsin Senator Bob La Follette was almost prosecuted for treason when he refused to donate to the Red Cross.
