Peruvian gold. motor vehicle parts, unrefined petroleum, raw aluminum, leather, plastics, vegetable oils, cement articles, furniture, and on and on and on, exploited and stolen at gunpoint the world over. the enormity of violence that buys their comfort is practically impossible to overstate, as is its ubiquity. an endless cavalcade of invasions and coups and unpayable loans and structural adjustment policies and legal and economic advisors preaching austerity. it is an imperial benefit in itself to be capable of ignoring something so omnipresent and overtly insulting to immediately launch into a "woe is me!" act whenever they can't

there is a tendency among imperial core scholars who attempt to include marginalized and "non-western" perspectives in their writing to platform only those who nonetheless agree with the liberal world order and act as agents enforcing it. for example, in a book I'm reading about dissociation, the author makes a point of this by platforming a native american elder's perspective on dissociation, despite the fact that he is a US veteran who served in the vietnam war and as a member of the board of a veterans' association, who has been praised by organizations like voice of america. it's already bad enough to flatten native american perspectives down to what a single individual has to say, but when the one individual you cite is an enforcer of imperialism, you've failed at even that. it's a frustrating tendency, to say the least.
