I love how helpless reading the Iliad makes you feel. Everything has been prophesied. It's not only you who knows this, the characters know too. Achilles knows he will die, yet abstains from battle as if it will do anything to persuade fate. The Trojans know they will lose, they still fight with aggression. Everyone will hurl themselves into written fates they have already read. They do it anyway, and if you were there, you would too. To be human is to disregard fate. To be human is to ignore odds. To be human is to be irrational. To be human is to be Achilles, hiding from battle although you know you will die. To be human is to be a Trojan, fighting although you know your city will fall. To be human is always, always to fall.
The Iliad ends with a funeral.

A quick Cassandra of Troy sketch, I wanted to experiment more within the horror aspect of prophecies:(esp with Apollo's curse and how it would influence her prophecies/words)

This is the first ever entirely unraveled papyrus scroll from the great Herculaneum library. In its entirety. The technology that allowed us to do this will make it easier to unravel every single one of the thousands of scrolls still waiting to be read within the library.
Herculaneum was buried in ash thousands of years ago, along with Pompeii. The above text is Philodemusâ On Gods, written around the 1st century BC. Other Hellenistic works are expected to follow it. Upwards of twenty-five-thousand scrolls are thought to still be down there. Tantalizing us.
Philodemus is thought to be the owner of the villa and a philosophy enthusiast, hence the abundance of such texts already discovered and partially decrypted before now. In my mind, this is the most important historical innovation of the millennium. This will revolutionize our understandings of Greece and Rome. Itâs already helped us discover the precise location of Platoâs tomb.
I, for one, am hopeful about the preservation of the works of ancient female writers. Many women wrote manuals of proper behavior, or their own philosophical interpretations of the world. Thatâs whatâs most exciting to me. Also learning the names of poetesses and philosophresses weâve never heard of before. AHH this is so exciting
Herc. 1667 is one scroll. Hundreds more remain sealed â an entire library of philosophy, poetry and prose waiting to be read for the first time since antiquity. The method shown here is built to scale, and everything needed to apply it is open. - Quote from the article

I really hate to break it to people, but from what I've heard, most of what's expected to be in the library at Herculaneum are hellenistic philosophical texts, especially Epicurean texts. Which I personally am very excited for, but I doubt it's what most people who are interested in greek mythology on tumblr are excited for.
Hopefully we can finally get some texts written by Epicurus himself instead of the few fragments of letters that we currently have. It'd also be really cool if we could patch in the missing lines we don't have from Lucretius's De Rerum Natura. More broadly, because Neoplatonism (which was a sort of synthesis of every philosophical system from antiquity except Epicureanism) was the primary philosophical influence on Christianity, when Christians took over Europe they didn't bother to preserve any of the Epicurean texts, causing almost all of them to be lost*. So, if the library at Herculaneum does indeed have more Epicurean texts, it'll be an incredible advance in understanding this ancient philosophical movement that we only have scraps from.
*Christians also just hated Epicureans because Epicurean philosophy was mostly atheistic and denied that the gods had a large role in the operation of nature and also denied that the soul survived after death, you should see some of the ridiculous slander St. Jerome made up about Lucretius
I tried to emphasize this with my own mentions of primarily Hellenistic texts, and how Philodemus himself was a philosophy enthusiast; and how my hope was, for the most part, for more philosophical texts from women. Though everyone kind of up and ran with it in a more mythological direction.
I did tag my post âgreek mythologyâ but that was mostly bc i thought fans of such were the kinda people whoâd appreciate this stuff
Which, tbf, Iâm sure thereâs plenty of Hellenistic mythology in there. Particularly if itâs mythological characters being repurposed to support a particular philosophy (like the Marriage of Cupid and Psyche typa deal).
People also keep mentioning âoh I hope [text from 400s BC or earlier] shows up!â when like. The graph I included clearly shows how unlikely that is.
Oh! Actually, what folks can hope for in terms of mythology could be things like how Plato referenced and quoted plays, poems, and hymns sometimes (generally to insult them, but still). And to be fair to everyone, weâve only accessed like 1,000 scrolls so far. Out of a potential 25,000 in the un-excavated parts of the library.
Flo, saying âunlikelyâ is a dangerous phrase to use around a delusional person. Anyways hope they have the detailed life story of a bunch of ancient roman courtesans in there so you get your sugary little treat too
the contrast is just funny to me
When you're in a "who loves their wife the most" competition and your opponents are Hector of Troy and Odysseus of Ithaca:
Noone told me about the mirror that has Cassandra swinging an axe at Paris when he first came to Troy because she saw that he'd bring ruin to their city, I love her
Deiphobus is also trying to get him because Paris humiliated him in the games lol

Apparently gay marriage was legalized in Greece only two years ago
I wanna get someone to draw Hera learning about this from Iris, and proceeding to cry tears of joy over it (and maybe going to a Pride parade). After over three-thousand years, people like Sappho, Hephaestion, Alexander, Ianthe, Philolaus, Diocles, and Erinna can finally bask in her domain.
Something which she had openly supported in the case of Ianthe, in her wont to marry Iphis.
I think it is extremely important for everyone in the Greek mythology community to know that even though Greeks can have light skin and light hair, and that white supremacists like talking about Ancient Greece and using statues as their profile pictures, it doesn't mean white supremacists actually like Greek people.
White supremacists use Ancient Greece to insert themselves and their beliefs, completely erasing an accurate Ancient Greece and actual Greek people and culture from the narrative. There's a reason why when discussing the casting of Helen in Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey, they only show pictures of blonde, blue-eyed, Germanic, or Anglo-Saxon women, and never actresses who are actually Greek or of Greek descent. Just like how a black woman playing Helen is an issue to them, a Greek woman playing Helen is also an issue to them.
Since the very beginning of the concept of whiteness, beginning in the 19th century, white supremacists have excluded Greek people from whiteness, like they did for other ethnicities that you may now consider white, such as the Irish and Italians. Whiteness did not exist before the 19th century. When whiteness was conceptualized, it was purposefully created to not just view people native to the Americas, Africa, Asia, and Oceania as lesser than, but to also view other Europeans as lesser than.
Even if Greeks are viewed as white today, white supremacists still won't accept them because their culture does not fit into their vision of whiteness, and they don't accept them as descendants of the Ancient Greeks because they think it is impossible for them to be related to a past where they've inserted their perfect image of white society onto.
production of any Greek play but the actress playing Helen has a porcelain mask on instead of us seeing her real face
Iâm just so obsessed with the idea of portrayals of Helen where she remains an absolute mystery
