1-27 of Law’s Story English Transaltions-Thoughts
Two years-ish ago, I read the unofficial English translations of Law’s Novel. They were shared with me via Google Docs, and I’ve read them about three times. I remember crying, blazing through the doc in a single day, and immediately writing my thoughts down in my drafts.
Here I am again, reading the official translations, sharing my thoughts once again about what stuck with me throughout reading the first 27 pages of the book. All of my thoughts are my own. They’re not very coherent this time, but perhaps I’ll do a better job when I read all of it. I was just too excited, so I needed to share at least some of my thoughts.
The official translations portrayed Law’s thoughts much more clearly, and I definitely got a much better idea of what was going on from his POV. The words felt much warmer and flowed nicely together. I could tell from the start that it’s almost like an older version of Law was revisiting the same story he wrote when he was younger. It felt easier to understand some ideas that didn’t get across to me the first time. Even the start felt new to me. It felt more gentle, but thorough. Like he was holding back a bit.
However, I feel that the docs conveyed his emotions more effectively. It seemed more honest and true to what he might’ve been actually feeling at the time. I would go as far as to say that both works go hand in hand, and did a wonderful job in their own respective ways. But, there are bolder details and subtle words and descriptions that makes parts of the story stand out. It’s very cool and makes me happy to see these changes, and makes me wonder if some people feel the same way or not. It’s bound to happen with varying translations, but it’s still interesting nonetheless.
This novel was a nice walk down memory lane, seeing how Law opens up just enough to Wolf about his story, but leaves key details out about his Devil Fruit. How he struggles to trust people at first, his intelligence shining through, his creativity, and his drive. They’re all amazing to see. I also enjoyed how he fought Shachi and Penguin for his own reasons, checked them over, and then left. I loved the way he fell into a routine that brought him a calm after a long and tortuous journey, and that he still acknowledges the people who were kind to him.
(I do miss Law calling Wolf Mr. Junk vs. Junker haha)
One thing that I remembered while reading was how Law occasionally talks to Cora. It’s a bittersweet part of his character that I felt disappointed in myself for disregarding such a wonderful detail.
Overall, I was very happy that we got a clearer picture on some of the facts about Law. The docs did a fantastic job of telling his story, in the sense that it felt more emotional, raw, and more effectively conveyed what Law was feeling at the time, while the Novel better explained the finer details and essential elements of the story, painting a clearer and more coherent picture of Law’s mind.
I still feel like one can really understand his character no matter if they stick to the docs or buy the novel. Regardless, it’s an impressive and incredible way to dive into the mind of a wonderful and brilliant character that is dear to many hearts across the world.
