Villanelle for the Dead White Fathers
Backwater, yeah, but I ain’t wet, so misters, I ain’t studin’ you: Don’t need your blessed doctrine to tell me what to write and when. Behold, God made me funky. There ain’t nothin’ I cain’t do.
I can write frontpocket Beale Street make you sweat and crave the blues, Dice a hymnal ‘til you shout Glory! The Holy Ghost done sent me sin! Backwater, yeah, but I ain’t wet, so misters, I ain’t studin’ you:
Signify a sonnet - to the boil of “Bitches Brew." Rhyme royal a triolet, weave sestina’s thick through thin. I said God made me funky. There ain’t nothin’ I cain’t do.
Eeshabbabba a subway station from damnation to upper room. Lift-swing-hunh chain gang hammer like Alabama’s nigga men. Backwater, yeah, but I ain’t wet, so misters, I ain’t studin’ you.
Shish kebab heroic couplets and serve 'em dipped in barbecue, Slap-bass blank-verse-lines, tunin’ fork tines 'til you think I’m Milton’s kin. Indeed, God made me funky. There ain’t nothin’ I cain’t do.
You’re poets dead; I’m poet live. Darky choruses belt: Hallelu’. While you were steppin’ out, someone else was steppin’ in. Backwater, yeah, but I ain’t wet, so misters, I ain’t studin’ you: God sho-nuff sho-nuff made me funky. There ain’t nan thing I cain’t do.

About The Show
www.thingification.org
On Thursday, July 18 and Saturday, July 20, 2013, Chicago native & uber-talented playwright/ actor, Duriel E. Harris invites you to celebrate the art of signifying, during two debut performances of “Thingification” at the 11th Annual Fresh Fruit Festival - “New York City’s grassroots, disciplinary international festival of LGBTQ arts and culture.”. Harris’ one woman show transports audiences through time and space--from an intimate urban music venue to the porch of a Deep South plantation mansion, to a gay dance club and a whirlwind of various locales. Echoing the legacy of greats like Anna Deavere Smith and Sarah Jones, Harris brings to life characters who enact their collective struggle against “Thingification,” the annihilating objectifying force at the core of all oppressions. “Thingification” shows how true expression elevates, educates, and entertains like no stereotype can.

"Hey.....get some of this transformative energy."
"Rehearsal in progress..."
Peace in the Valley, Peace in the City, Peace in my Soul
Putting together reading lists and playlists to keep me focused and grounded for the show. Off the dome, a necessity: Yogi Ramacharaka's Science of Breath (1904) recommended with wisdom by the one and only Douglas R Ewart. I come back to the book and to breath coming back to myself and the flow of energy from inspiration to aspiration. It may seem silly but I have to remember to breathe.
"How long can you hold your breath?"
--girl, 8
And I think I'll grab Chris Hardwick's Nerdists Way to complement Julia Cameron's Artists Way. Plus a little Scientific American Mind... I'm so behind in the reading.
Playlists will include, of course, K-Styles mixes of Thingification tracks, and relaxation and vocal exercises compiled by lyric soprano Kristin White, thingified reconstructed mixtapes by Lee Collins (from back in the day) and a whole host of others--some of which I will carry in my mind's ear until memory fails and even after...these sticky brain worms will take hold and if I'm lucky I'll hear more that moves me in the years to come.
More on the playlist: A lil bit of disco, some club cuts & just FuNK
Pam Todd & Love Exchange's "Lets Get Together"
Peter Brown's "Do You Wanna Get Funky With Me"
Cheryl Lynn's "Star Love"
Lil' Louis's "Club Lonely"
Tom Browne's "Funkin' For Jamaica (Original 12" Mix)"
Stevie Wonder's "My Eyes Don't Cry No More"
Lyn Collins's "Think"
Fonda Rae's "Over Like a Fat Rat"
Foxy's "Get Off"
Brainstorm's "Lovin Is Really My Game"
& "Heart Begin to Beat" by Savage Progress--it's all in the science of breath. Tunin' dem dreadloc antennae Rastafari style.
There's a Feelin Oh So Real in Every Human
Just one of those days, lovers of life! Packed to the rafters with the busy-ness of the business of the bustle of hustle. Wanna lay my brain on the radio, er um, the stereo (this is not the 70's--though I must say I did have a Dj save my life just recently (Madrid!) with a love post via FB's greasy grapevine). There's a boom box in my future!
PHOTO OP!
DJ Shawn rocking Soul in the Hole dancin' to a lil Carl Bean "Born This Way" prepping for the Fresh Fruit Festival with a serious vibe for serious play: "I feel good!...Heyyyy I was born this way..." DJ's itchy fingers ('Sup Itch!) scratch the turntables and the body in the soul moves in a knowledge all its own.
The music's got me! Hope it gets you, too...

Later!
Stu Stu Stu Studio!
Gyes! In that Morris Day, TIME, slide across the floor kinda way... Thats, "Yes" with a zoot suit and pocket watch.
Thank ye for joining me for yet another early morning entry. This one more brief because delirium is chasing me about the living room with a bouquet of flowers. (It's allergy season.)
Back in the studio tomorrow before rehearsal & then again after, I imagine. Tweaking and shifting. Gotta hit the hay (hard and with a vengeance) so I can rise early & refreshed with my ears open and receptive, tuned for the subtleties. & Tonight I will dream about music! Uhm hmm good! The boost and bump await!

Get Up to Get Down Early Moanin' Update
Friends, countryfolkspeople, lend me your ears!
Let us fill them with K-Styles phat fab tracks & funk & poetry & the stuff of dreams reshaping reality. Yet Do I Marvel...
Rehearsal today was an explosion in a good way. Meetings, phone conversations, and emails went poof! into the vapor & the seven characters (eight if you count the light--a conversation for another time) emerged into timespace at warp speed. Every body had something to say and a little different way to say it and the room--filled with voice & bass & body--became an other thing. All to say: it was live! & alla that in street clothes!
Which of course has us gearing up for rehearsals in NYC! In conversation with Shetler Studios for rooms and being surprised to find there's no amplification allowed ala no microphones due to minimal soundproofing/potential bleed. A-N-D for folks unfamiliar with Shetler they're discounts are like hotels.com--you get off peak rates & early bird specials for being late: Can't book more than 48 hours in advance... So the early bird, in this case, pays a hefty price to get the worm. Where will the Thingification seven + light do their break time karaoke? We were just dying to use our little Fender mini amp.
So for amp, substitute lungs, diaphragm and the science of breath. Here's where all of those years sitting next to the didgeridoos comes in handy. :)
Mix-down Mastery: Must Be the Music
Just in from a wonderful session with Kenyon. Awesome to hear the sounds brighten up and round out as a result of his skillful hand/eye/ear coordination. & It's a whole body thing. Moving with it. Umph! It was like listening to a choir. Sang children!
To date we've remixed "Danger, Live Feed" ("You're a grotesque greasy gutter geechee..."); the "Dinner (Thingi) Remix" ("You my dinner, you the dinner I wanna do"); and Tariq aka "Dynamite (Ooo Oui)" (lyrics are more like sounds and... well... they're grown folks' business).
All a part of the joy in the work: Musicophilia ala Oliver Sacks but even better. I can change the station whene'er I want and my brainRadio (fueled by dreadloc antennae connectivity) plays my music... Not just music I wanna hear but music I've made. Can't beat that with a stick. And it's ad free. Courtesy of DrPoMo with the K-Styles boost & bump.
