yeah they made mai's feeling for zuko canon but they really should dive head in some toxic yuri w mailee because (and i know they haven't interacted yet) but it's so obvious that maiko won't bring anything to the table in terms of chemistry between the actors
Is it just me or does Zuko feel as much like the protagonist of NATLA as Aang does? More so than in the original?
(Much of) the Live Action Netflix ATLA is actually really good. I’ll die on that hill.
Crackpot theory: I think Ghosts of the Old World could contain a combo of the Puppetmaster and the Southern Raiders. The 'ghosts' part of the title could refer to Hama, Kya, and Yon Rha in different capabilities. And since S2 put a lot of emphasis on the Zuko and Katara Dynamic (not getting into shipping here) I've been wondering if they'd move the Puppetmaster to somehow include Zuko. Think the connective tissue could be easy to make too. The events of the Puppetmaster reignite Katara's trauma about Kya's murder and how it relates to her complicated feelings about Zuko. Zuko, feeling a fresh of guilt after hearing a first hand account of the Fire Nation's atrocities and wanted to get back into Katara's good graces, takes her to find Yon Rha for revenge.

Lesser discussed ZK parallels
- eclipses are weirdly central to the plot and thematics. Day of Black Sun, obviously, but in siege of the north, the fire nation killing the moon is stylized as a lunar eclipse.
- color symbolism is crucial in animation, especially ATLA. Fire and Water in the show exchange each other’s colors constantly. Azula’s blue firebending, Hama’s red blood bending. Needless to say, the existence of PaintedSpirit. Now that I think about it, Zuko wears blue and Katara wears red more than they need to …
- I’ve never seen it outright stated, but everyone knows this: Zuko is obviously associated with gold, but I swear Katara is canonically a silver girly. Gold / Silver aesthetic ships are such an underrated red / blue variation. I’ve forced this onto so many of my OCs
- Zuko is weirdly drawn to water. He’s a fantastic swimmer. He mimics waterbending techniques and can bend underwater. He’s even a sailor. The Sailor/Mermaid ZK trope exists for a reason.
Update Courtesy @Sruthi9018 :
I mean, it's points that OP brings up like how Zuko spends most of his exile on a ship surrounded by water, how the happiest memories of his childhood involve either the ocean or garden pond/s (feeding turtleducks and spending time with his mom), his swimming skills etc. like he is placed in conjunction with forms of water near consantly to serve his path to character growth and change (him yelling at the sky to strike him down in the rain during one of his most challenging periods of growth for ex)
- I’ll take “the healing potential of fire bending, and destructive potential of waterbending” and raise you “lightning bending and bloodbending both have the capacity to be used in medicine”
- Katara would become as much a theatre kid as Zuko if given the opportunity.
- Zuko is the only MC that matches Katara’s passion for humanitarian work and vigilante justice. He *canonically* reminds her of Jet.
Bonus Taang:
- the amount of parallels between Toph and Aang do not stop at earth/air. They’re both “trapped” before finding their agency. She is blind and he opens his third eye. She humbles him - he sets her free
Oh brother. The Live Action sequel to this post will be longer than a cvs receipt
welcome back 2006
Currently working on the Zutara edit of all time
Wish me luck
Some people: I love zutara's platonic bond! Not everything has to be about sex!
Me, watching Katara putting her thumb on Zuko's lip in the catacombs: now suck on it.
Watching Natla with my mom and we get to the Jin and Zuko date and she literally goes 'wait I thought he liked Katara'
Yeah mom, you'd think so huh? 😂

Look I don't mind either Kataang or Zutara becoming canon, I like both ships, what I'm not okay with is the fact that Aang's actor is a minor while Katara's is an adult. So maybe Zutara being the live action canon would be better...
One of many of Zutara's draws is the fact that they are made to be best friends.
Their personalities compliment each other in such a way they never have with anyone else.
Once you drop the armor and the titles, they are just a boy and a girl with fire and water abilities trying to live in a world decided for them the day they were born.
They effortlessly open up to one another whether they mean to or not.
Katara can start venting and ranting about something because she's scared or anxious and Zuko calmly talks her through it.
That's how they are.
Katara has tells Zuko can see when she is trying to suppress how she feels and he'll annoy her until she finally lets it out.
It's push and pull at it's best description.
So when antis use the "They are just close friends" thing, that's not the clap back they think it is.
Friendship has levels and Zuko and Katara reached the highest levels within MONTHS of knowing each other as TEENAGERS.
I don't think a lot of people realize from a fictional perspective how special that is.
I think this also applies to the misconception that they’re enemies to lovers. They are enemies to *best friends* to lovers, which is inherently different. If you want real Enemies To Lovers, a great example is Jude and Cardan. Their romance was flat out *twisted* at first. He dealt with his attraction to her by bullying her and scribbled her name over and over like a serial killer. Jude considered killing him when she developed feelings for him, and their first kiss was with him tied to a chair at knife point, her using his feelings for her as a weapon.
By the time Zuko and Katara would have developed feelings for each other, especially in the Live Action, they were already allies. They bonded DEEPLY in that cave. That’s why the betrayal hit so hard.
I love how the live action adds that it was physically difficult to separate them during that first encounter in the catacombs. Beautiful foreshadowing of them becoming inseparable after southern raiders, arguably more than they were with their partners. Actually, no, canonically…
They were best friends first and foremost, NOT enemies. Or um, platonic soulmates with heavy romantic subtext.
I'm sorry????
Zuko and Katara cooking together is canon? I'm gonna have a stroke.
If I could make another NATLA zutara wish let it be that zuko would grovel MORE once he gets to join the gaang. I’m aware that it was iroh who he betrayed the most in the catacombs scene but I’m focusing on Katara here. Because what do you mean it was as if he had no idea why she was so mad at him? The catacombs scene never made an impact in his mind? Someone who offered to heal or at least try to see if she could heal his scar didn’t at all leave a mark on him? Someone who he shared why he had his scar just wasn’t that significant for him? And I mean sure he worked on redeeming himself but I’m talking about groveling here not whether he actually changed or not because obviously he changed. SHE WAS THE FIRST TO TRUST HIM BACK IN BA SING SE. Tell me why he wouldn’t have been more shy and ashamed towards her when he joined the gaang. And look I get it, a part of the reason why she’s mad at him was that she was also projecting her anger for her mother’s death onto him. BUT STILL SHE SHOULD’VE ALSO BEEN ENGRAVED IN HIS MIND.
I need that man to beg on his knees. I need him to curl into a ball and sob. I need him to obsessively draw pictures of her like he did Aang in season 1.
a mother bear and her cubs 🤧❄️
