Beca Mitchell and Emily Junk from the Pitch Perfect franchise are autistic.
-Not good at communicating well in social situations, sometimes out of deliberate ignorance but a lot of out of genuine unawareness interacting with people, and she has difficulty truly making friends because of this. She misreads situations a lot, which strains her relationships with other people.
-She’s almost always wearing headphones, and while it isn’t directly said to be for this purpose, a lot of the time she does it to block out external noise.
-She comes off as cold and emotionally distant, which is clear when she first meets Jesse and he tries to break her out of her shell. In reality, she feels way too much sometimes.
-Her special interest is making/producing music, and she lacks motivation to do anything that isn’t related to that interest up until she becomes more invested in the Bellas.
-She masks around and when talking to strangers, and you can tell when she’s faking her personality around someone because she doesn’t tend to be an overly sincere person.
-Leading off of the last statement, she tends to be extremely blunt and doesn’t really pay attention to the effect that her words have on other people, especially when she’s angry or upset.
-She has a rather monotonous tone of voice when speaking, and it never really fluctuates.
-She loves her friends, but doesn’t know how to show it. When she gets overwhelmed by Worlds, graduating, and her job in the second movie, she takes it out on them angrily when in reality she’s just stressed and trying to get by.
-She’s immediately made out to be the socially awkward member of the Bellas. Compared to most of the other girls, she lacks awareness of herself and others when interacting with people, and she embarrasses herself a lot because of it, often saying or doing the wrong thing.
-Her special interest is songwriting. She gets fixated on her song “Flashlight” to the point that it’s the only one she can remember when she panics and has to sing on the spot.
-She has a pretty strong personal moral code, which is shown by the way she insists that the girls, including herself, stay true to who they really are, and she doesn’t understand why they’re all obsessed with winning when she just wants to enjoy the time they have together, do the right thing, and write her songs.
-She does, indeed, follow her own advice and stays true to herself because she never really masks. Every embarrassing, awkward, and weird part of her is shown and it’s a realistic portrayal of someone who’s unapologetically themself.
-She stims a lot with her hands, especially in her early scenes whenever she’s really excited.
-She sometimes becomes hyperverbal when nervous.
-She has trouble picking up on certain things sometimes, and that prompts others to call her the “dumb” or “stupid” one.
-Very empathetic. Perhaps not to the extent of hyper-empathy, but it’s clear that she possesses the trait more than the other girls do.
-She’s very emotionally expressive, wears her heart on her sleeve so to speak. Whether it’s through her music or through her small mannerisms, it’s easy to tell what emotion(s) she’s feeling.
