The Younger Sebald

     There was incessant knocking at the door and Sally was      having none of it. “I’m not interested in whatever you’re      selling,” she called, “So please go away.” She couldn’t       remember the last time she had been in the mood to go      out to do anything but pick up takeout or get some     translation work. She was was just numb over the loss of     her only family by this point, even if she didn’t know if he     was dead or just MIA, but hadn’t really wanted to venture     back into the outside world yet. She was even on a dating     app now but always swiping left and not making any matches.    “What part of please go away aren’t you getting?” she     yelled as she knocking continued.

      The younger Sebald sibling sighed, “You’re very kind to say so       but...I don’t have a future. My future is keeping my brother’s        legacy alive. Apart from that, I have nothing.” She already had       no one since the loss of her brother, a loss that weighed so heavy       on her heart. He’d raised her when their parents very clearly didn’t       want her, he was her best friend. She didn’t know what would have       happened to her if not for him. If she couldn’t uphold his legacy and       make sure he was remembered, she’d have nothing and feel like she       failed him so she would do everything in her power to prevent failing       him. A tiny smile curved up her lips but it didn’t reach her eyes, “I had       my own dreams once, of course, but my only dreams now are       for people to remember my brother and recognize his talent, even       if he’s gone. If I don’t, I’d feel like I failed in my life and as his       little sister. I’d feel like I failed him.” Sally had once wanted to travel,       find love, start a family of her own. She even wanted to name her first       son Gustav after her brother. She wanted to fill every aspect of her life       with light and love but, once she’d received the news that her brother       had been killed, she felt darkness overwhelming her. She set aside       those dreams and dedicated her life to preserving her brother’s       memory and making sure no one forgot about his films which were all       he’d left behind in the world. He’d left her too but the films, in her mind,       were far more important. “But enough about me, what about you?       What dreams and plans do you have for your future?”

Thank you!” *Still straightens the candle      before she makes her wish and blows it out* “I hope everyone      is having a very happy Easter and had a happy Passover. ...I      hope everyone found all the eggs before they start stinking.”       *laughs*

Sally has one regret. She let them built Littlest Elf Land. She doesn’t think Gustav would have wanted that. However, she cut the ribbon on opening day and gave the dedication speech.
