Slot Frustrated as Liverpool âRobbedâ by VAR Despite Strong Performance
Arne Slot, head coach of Liverpool FC, expressed strong frustration following his sideâs 0-2 defeat away to Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Champions League. The Dutch coach insisted his team performed well enough to win and questioned the consistency of VAR decisions that denied them a crucial penalty.
Liverpool created several attacking opportunities throughout the match and believed they had won a penalty in the 64th minute when Alexis Mac Allister went down in the box after a challenge from Willian Pacho. However, after a VAR review, the referee overturned the decisionâwhat proved to be a major turning point, as PSG capitalized on their chances to secure the win.
Speaking after the match, Slot compared the situation to last season: âLast week, we may have gotten more than we deserved from a 0-2 scorelineâit felt like dÃĐjà vu from āđāļāļāļāļāļĨ last year. But today, itâs the opposite. We got far less than we deserved. I believe we played at a level worthy of winning, but their defensive quality and resilience made the difference.â
The Dutch manager also voiced his frustration over officiating decisions, suggesting Liverpool have been repeatedly on the wrong end this season. âLooking at the whole season, Iâm not even surprised anymore. Weâve had too many questionable decisions go against us. For me, this situation was very simpleâif the referee didnât award it initially, VAR shouldnât interfere. But this has become a pattern, not just in Europe but also in the Premier League.â
Despite his complaints, Slot admitted his team must take responsibility for their lack of finishing. âWe created plenty of chances but couldnât score. Thatâs something we need to improve.â
Another concern for Liverpool fans is the injury to Hugo Ekitike. Slot expressed sympathy for the forward, saying: âItâs something weâve seen too often this seasonâlosing players to injury. But itâs especially painful for him. No one wants to get injured at such a crucial stage of the season.â
