So, for those of you who might not know, MegaMan Battle Network held importance to not only Capcom and Keiji Inafune, but Konami’s Hideo Kojima, the man behind the Metal Gear series, also quite enjoyed it. IN FACT, his main series for the GameBoy Advance, Boktai, has several cross-overs with Battle Network.
In BN 4, the Gun del Sol chips were introduced, which were powered up if you were Jacked In in a sunny location, playing off of Boktai’s solar sensor that was an integral part of the game and using the main weapon, the Gun del Sol. There was a Program Advance associated with the Gun del Sol chips, the Pile Driver, which was a big part of Boktai as well. To top it off, a small side quest was available in which the player helps Django, the hero of the Boktai series delete ShadeMan.EXE, because Django is primarily a vampire hunter.
In BN 5, the Gun del Sol remained a chip, though the Pile Driver was removed, and in its stead, Django got his own Navi chip. Another feature was added, in which BN5 and Boktai 2 could have a cross-over battle, which could give Django equipment such as the Mega-Buster, and if Boktai 2 was in the GBA slot of a DS when starting a new game in BN5 DS, the player could start the game with Sol Cross, which gave Mega bonuses if he was jacked in somewhere sunny.
In BN 6, the Gun del Sol chips and Django chips remained, but due to Boktai 3 having a Japan only release, the cross-over battle was given the axe. In addition, in BN 4 and on, Lan had some sort of poster or toy of Django in his room.
This was a prime example of what video game companies can do when they work together. Both Boktai and Battle Network were great games in their own right; interesting stories, thought-out characters, and addicting game-play. But one thing that made them even better was the fact that could work together. Nintendo, I want you to take notes. If you want the Wii U to be a successful tool in bringing people together, then take a leaf out of Capcom and Konami’s book. They truly were “Better, Together.”
And that’s my rant. Hope it gave you some food for thought.
