The birds, Damian found out, were the best wingmen on the planet. They knew and said everything about you when Damian asked in their familiar broken sentences. Damian listened like the birds hadnât tried to get him a date with you and they were simply trying to help. Damian learned that you loved to sing with them and felt his face grow hot when Coconut croaked,
Forever was sounding better and better the more he got to know you as well. Damian had not considered what loving the birds would do to him.
He felt out of place in his most breathable dress shirt and slacks despite the heat. He didn't even know why he dressed so formally when he knew for a fact you wouldn't be nearly as prepared for anything romantic. Why would you be? You were supposed to be stuck at a bird sanctuary for the next three months with minimal human interaction. You probably didn't have anything fancier than a pair of shorts and a nice t-shirt.
This was why Damian was not surprised in the slightest when you arrived looking like you weren't prepared in the slightest for anything fancier than street food and sitting on whatever surface was still available in the busy streets.
Despite all of this, you looked beautiful in your casual clothes with your messy hair that had become akin to its own bird nest. You wore comfortable clothes because you knew the humidity was going to kill you if you didn't, and Damian had never felt so out of place.
Nonetheless, Damian still found himself speechless when he finally saw you approach. He stared at you as you walked to him. The sun highlighted you like you were an avian deity coming from the sky rather than an exhausted zoologist who was already sweating in the scorching heat.
Damianâs eyes only diverted from you because one of your birds (who seemed to have an attitude) shoved him with its head and squawked rather impatiently. You laughed at your very opinionated bird and carefully pet the top of its head before it flew off. It had done itâs job. You rubbed hand sanitizer onto your hands before you gently took Damian's hand inside yours and gave him a smile that he wished he could burn into his memory. His hand lifted yours and kissed it gently.Â
Damian asked while offering his arm for you to hold after you dropped his hand. You timidly accepted his arm and asked in a genuinely curious voice,
âArenât you scared of disease?â
You know that you would be if a borderline stranger with a bird obsession pet the animal in a small rescue. Damian shook his hand and explained,
âI saw you use hand sanitizer after petting the bird.â
You always use hand sanitizer after touching the animals even if they werenât diagnosed with a disease. There were several bird diseases that could be transferred to humans shockingly easily, and you werenât about to accidentally give him a disease if it could be completely avoided.
Damian started walking smoothly with you holding his arm lightly. You looked at Damian like he was a new bird in your care and you needed time to learn about him. Damian tried not to let the look get to him. What could he expect after you spent so many months working exclusively with birds and coworkers who you have known your entire career. You probably havenât seen a stranger for longer than it takes to make a grocery run.
âWhere are you taking me?â
You finally asked after a long stretch of silence. Damian had thought long and hard. Where does he take someone whose whole life was dedicated to animals and didnât seem to care much about a relationship in a country he had never been to before? He spent a long time thinking about what you would love and what would be true to who he is as a person.
âI may have pulled some strings.â
Damian did not elaborate despite your pestering. He merely gave you a smirk that screamed confidence in his decision. You tried not to pout, but he made it very difficult when he looked so smug with your never-ending questions. You grumbled half-heartedly after another long pause,
âYouâre worse than my birds.â
Damian snickered, but he took it as a compliment. You loved those birds more than anything in the world. He would even bet that you would happily die taking care of those birds, and he would be right. You loved your avian friends more than you liked people most days, and that is exactly why Damian knew you would love this date.
Damian did not waste a single second when it came to this date, and he knew that it showed by the time you realised what you were looking at and the experience you were never going to forget.
Damian helped you out of the car while closely monitoring your expressions. He had taken you to a marine animal rescue after paying off the main director for a private tour of the veterinary portion and all of the rescue exhibits.
You gasped and grabbed his hand to drag him quickly to the manatees in their tanks. Damian subconsciously smiled at your excitement. His eyes softened as he looked at the way you lit up while surrounded by animals.
âThe manatees are blind, but they respond well with water vibrations.â
You heard a voice informed you like it was the most obvious solution to their vision problem. You quickly hid behind Damian and whirled around in surprise. Damian tried not to be offended that you would feed him to the wolves metaphorically and instead felt flattered that you saw him as a protector without a second thought.
âBeloved, this is our tour guide and the lead veterinarian.â
You hesitantly stepped out from behind him, but you still gripped his hand so tightly that Damian thought you would break his hand if you were startled again. Damian looked at you and then at your conjoined hands. He felt a warmth spread inside his chest and it looked like you felt similarly. You felt your face heat up when Damian lightly kissed the back of your hand like he couldnât resist the urge.
Next up were the manta rays swimming with fins or tails that were deformed in one way or another. With one look, you knew all of the effort and work that the workers put into physical therapy to help the beautiful creature survive.
âThey were born with the deformities.â
You nodded along to his every word, but kept your thoughts to yourself. Damian wrapped his arm around you to remind you of his silent, comforting presence. You leaned into the embrace with no desire to leave now that you were nestled into his side.
Your hand finally released the crushing pressure that you had on Damianâs hand and soothingly rubbed your thumb against his knuckles and joints as a silent apology, which Damian accepted. Damian kissed your forehead in response when the veterinarian turned her back to face the next exhibit.
You looked at Damian like you were recalculating a future and finally adding Damian into it. Damian, steadfast and comforting in a silent way that didnât need to be spoken in order to be felt. You thought about what a future with his warm, quiet love would be.Â
Damian was quietly thinking the exactly same thoughts. You were caring, sassy, and took no nonsense from rich jerks. You were perfect. You loved animals more than you loved people. You dedicated months if not years of your life to animal rescues and rehabilitation to the point that you became a leading avian researcher.
You loved and protected your birds like they were your children. If that is the love that he could expect from you, then what would make him hesitate? He realised that it was a fear of rejection. Rejection from this beautiful, brilliant, and kind person who he was quickly growing to love.
Damian looked at you and knew that you were it. You were exactly the person he was looking for his entire life without ever knowing it. He opened his mouth then closed it. Damianâs voice was shaky and quiet when the words finally came to him, but there wasnât any hesitation in his words,
âI want every bird in the world to know you are mine. Do you accept these terms?â
That sure was a way to ask such an important question. You didnât seem disappointed at all, however. You actually seemed to enjoy the way he spoke even if it did sound awkward at times. Who are you to judge what is awkward when your best friend is a bird? You gave him a look that screamed mischief and a wink before squawking,
Damian couldnât stop his laughter and neither could you once it started. He had no idea how long he planned to stay at the animal rescue, but he knew that he was ready to run away with you at any given moment. He didnât care in the slightest how eccentric you were or what his family was going to think; you were his âmateâ now, and that was a role he planned to take extremely seriously.
