What is needed is a realization that power without love is reckless and abusive and that love without power is sentimental and anemic. Power at its best is love implementing the demands of justice. Justice at its best is love correcting everything that stands against love.
Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. “Where Do We Go From Here?” (via unquotedmlk)
If you can shoot Martin [Luther King Jr.], you can shoot all of us. And there’s nothing in your record to indicate you won’t, or anything that would prevent you from doing it. That will be the beginning of the end, if you do, and that knowledge will be all that will hold your hand. Because one no longer believes, you see—I don’t any longer believe, and not many black people in this country can afford to believe— any longer a word you say. I don’t believe in the morality of this people at all. I don’t believe you do the right thing because you think it’s the right thing. I think you may be forced to do it because it will be the expedient thing. Which is good enough.
James Baldwin in Esquire Magazine (1968), via the #BlackLivesMatter reading list (via autostraddle)
[W]e are saying that something is wrong … with capitalism…. There must be better distribution of wealth and maybe America must move toward a democratic socialism. Call it what you may, call it democracy, or call it democratic socialism, but there must be a better distribution of wealth within this country for all of God’s children.
Martin Luther King, Jr. (1966)
Why is equality to assiduously avoided? Why does white America delude itself , and how does it rationalize the evil it retains? The majority of white Americans consider themselves sincerely committed to justice for the Negro. They believe that American society is essentially hospitable to fair play and to steady growth toward a middle-class Utopia embodying racial harmony. But unfortunately this is a fantasy of self-deception and comfortable vanity.

Whites, it must frankly be said, are not putting in a similar mass effort to reeducate themselves out of their racial ignorance. It is an aspect of their sense of superiority that the white people of America believe they have so little to learn. The reality of substantial investment to assist Negroes into the twentieth century, adjusting to Negro neighbors and genuine school integration, is still a nightmare for all too many white Americans. White America would have liked to believe that in the past ten years a mechanism had somehow been created that needed only orderly and smooth tending for the painless accomplishment of change. Yet this is precisely what has not been achieved. [….] These are the deepest causes for contemporary abrasions between the races. Loose and easy language about equality, resonant resolutions about brotherhood fall pleasantly on the ear, but for the Negro there is a credibility gap he cannot overlook. He remembers that with each modest advance the white population promptly raises the argument that the Negro has come far enough. Each step forward accents an ever-present tendency to backlash.

HAVANA—The Cuban Revolution’s universal healthcare and tuition-free education have created a more inclusive society where Afro-Cubans were given a chance to become doctors, engineers, and other professionals who helped build a new nation.
HAVANA—The Cuban Revolution’s universal healthcare and tuition-free education have created a more inclusive society where Afro-Cubans were given a chance to become doctors, engineers, and other professionals who helped build a new nation.
But vanquishing racism hasn’t been so easy. Despite the many advances by Afro-Cubans over the past 50 years, implicit and explicit anti-black racism continues to permeate Cuban society.
One group is trying to fix that.
“The Cuban Revolution brought a lot of positive changes for black women in Cuba in education and with access to resources, but the racial problem in Cuba is not necessarily a state problem or an institutional problem,” says Lucila Insua Brindis, the 67-year-old founder of Havana’s Afro-Descendent Organization for Women.
Brindis says racism in Cuba is “personal and exists culturally” and is something that’s “transmitted through the family in most cases.” In other words, she says, racism doesn’t exist as much on the structural level as it does in day-to-day interpersonal relationships.
It is necessary to understand that the police army at Standing Rock wants to start killing the water protectors. You don’t deliberately inflict hypothermia on people, especially older people, unless you are cognizant of the fact that this can be lethal. Their use of water cannons in this context is lethal force. I imagine they’re delighted at the opportunity; they’ve only held off on live ammunition this long because massacres are bad PR.
(Oh, and a quick sidenote: “rubber” bullets are not made of rubber. They are metal pellets with a thin rubber coating. You can absolutely kill or severely injure someone with a rubber bullet.)

Unarmed black teenager James Means fatally shot by white man who called him “another piece of trash”
On Monday night, 15-year-old James Means was reportedly shot and killed by a man he “bumped into” outside of a Dollar General store in Charleston, West Virginia.
Means, a black teenager, was said to be unarmed.
That same night, police arrested William Pulliam, 62, in connection with the shooting. Pulliam had gone to dinner after the shooting.
Pulliam was white and carrying a gun, despite no permit to own a firearm due to a previous conviction for domestic violence
Pulliam reportedly “admitted” to fatally shooting Means, telling police, “The way I look at it, that’s another piece of trash off the street.”
A GoFundMe has been set up for Means’ funeral
Pulliam, whose criminal history includes physical abuse of his wife and daughter, has a history of harassing teens in the area.

Inglewood, CA #BLACKLIVESMATTER
On Sunday, police responded to a call of a suspicious vehicle parked on Manchester Boulevard around 3:10 am. When police arrived, they engaged in a 45-minute long standoff before opening fire on the man and woman inside the vehicle, killing them both.
The woman was pronounced dead shortly after the shooting, and the man succumbed to his injuries after paramedics transported him to a local hospital.
The shooting seemed like an open and shut case until the next day. Mayor James Butts, while responding to questions about the shooting, opened up a huge can of worms — both the man and the woman were unconscious.
For at least 45 minutes, police attempted “to rouse” them in an effort “to de-escalate the situation,” said Butts.
After admitting that the couple was asleep, Butts quickly defended the officers, noting, “Obviously at some point they were conscious because somebody felt threatened.”
However, that notion has yet to be proven and is particularly unlikely due to the fact that not a single officer received so much as a scratch, nor did the couple have any reason to be violent.
Both of the victims were parents; Kisha Michael, 31, a single mother of three sons, and Marquintan Sandlin, 32, a single father of four daughters.
Families for both described them as devoted parents who made arrangements for care of their children while they took a night off.
“The police ain’t telling us nothing,” said Trisha Michael after being met with tight lips from the department.
“He was a loving father,” said Sandlin’s sister Leandra Faulkner. “All he cared about was his girls, getting them right.”
According to his relatives, Sandlin had a ‘rough life’ but had turned it around and was working as a successful truck driver.
Sadly, these children will now grow up knowing that their parents were taken from them by cops, scared of a sleeping couple.

What the fuck, were they aggressively snoring? Who opens fire on someone they just spent 45 minutes trying to wake up? Great. Now I’ve heard it all. Cops are afraid of unconscious people. 45 minutes of de-escalation? Did it ever once occur that if you try to wake someone up in a car with loud noise and they don’t wake up, medical attention may be needed?

45mins of trying to wake them up and nobody found the strange?
Y'all gotta realize that some of us are weary because of the direct violence that comes with this presidency. Sure he can’t do x,y,z, but that’s not going to stop his supporters from harassing, murdering and discriminating against minorities. His election has given them the thumbs up to be openly prejudiced at a greater amplitude. The direct threat comes from his supporters, and that’s what’s terrifying. These people are all around us in positions of power and education. Their confidence in their bigotry has been restored and multiplied and that is extremely worrisome.
Would y'all subscribe to a monthly package of sample products from small black owned businesses?
Okay update: I have everything in place but the money. I’ve chosen the products for the first BBE (black business empowerment) Box, I have a friend working on the website, and I’ve calculated the cost for a subscription. I think I’m going to start a Kickstarter 🤔

Okay so as of now, a lot of different things are happening. The person I’ve chosen to design the website is on hiatus until December, a bunch of shit just came up financially bc I got in a wreck on Monday, and I’m doing a lot of revisions and stuff for my business plan. So I may not make my goal of sending the first box out in January. You may continue to donate but please note that the donations are for the website and a laptop to conduct business on. Your contribution is NOT a subscription, but I will be sending each donator something as a ‘thank you’ (I have not decided what yet) when visiting the gofundme page please read the bio thoroughly before donating and feel free to ask any questions! Again I appreciate everyone’s support greatly ❤️❤️❤️

Just because someone is Pro-Black does not mean they’re anti colorism 🙃
I’m going to keep reblogging this because I keep seeing folks with “Pro-Black” in their bio that keep dismissing colorism.
