as someone who has really enjoyed listening to the rerecords, I think finally going back and listening to the originals again has given me such an appreciation for both. the rerecords have always felt a little bit like reading a memoir. those are her stories. her emotions. her truths. but with years of experience between them. and that’s not me saying the rerecords lack anything (I genuinely believe she did a wonderful job recreating them). but there is an element that feels distant (again, not a bad thing). like an older sister sharing her wisdom with you. she’s gone through it and she has seen what happens on the other side of it. whereas the originals feel much more in the moment. something to listen to when you need to feel like someone is actively going through what you are going through. you need a friend by your side without that distance of time. and I think that’s such a cool thing to get to experience. we can pick and choose which version best fits the moment we’re dealing with. and that’s such a wonderful gift to have.
