That's what the court had called it. Landing the ex-history teacher with a hefty 16-year sentence, and now here he was: backseat of a police cruiser on the highway leaving Atlanta.

"Well, I reckon you didn't do it then." The cop spoke, snapping Lee out of his thoughts as he looked up to meet the older man's gaze in the rearview mirror. "Why do you ask?" Lee inquired with a raised brow.

"Y'know, I've driven a buncha fella down to this prison. Lord knows how many. Usually is 'bout now I get the "I didn't do it"." The older man shot back with a scoff and roll of his eyes before returning his gaze to the road.

The cruiser was silent for a beat. Lee looked down at his lap where his hands rested, linked together by metal cuffs that were rubbing up against this skin on his wrists. "Not from me..." He mumbled as memories of that day flickered in his minds. "'Cause guys in your position already said it enough?" The cop asked as he spared another glance in the rearview mirror to look at Lee.

"We've got what looks like a 10-91E near Peachtree Exit on 285. All cars asked to keep on the lookout for a 91V in the area."

Lee jumped slightly at the sudden chatter coming from the CB radio in the front seat.

"I followed your case a little bit, you being a Macon boy and all."

"You're from Macon then." Lee asked, appreciative in the change of subject.

"Yep. Came up to Atlanta to be a city cop in the seventies. Always wanted to work a murder case- like that senatorial mess you got yourself mixed up in, with all due respect. A real shame that is..." Lee's mood plummeted again when the cop brought up the entire reason Lee was going to prison in the first place. He took a moment to look out the window, hopefully he could gather his thoughts and at least try to make a little peace with what had happened. Furrowing his brow as he watched a different police cruiser on the other half of the intersection racing towards Atlanta with its sirens blaring and lights flashing.

"Hell, the whole family used to be regulars at your folks' drugstore right downtown. Still there?"

"Sure is." Lee nodded in response.

The CB crackled to life once again, voices advising others of incoming medical personnel heading towards Hartsfield.

"Any of that seem important to you?" The convict inquired, a curious expression as he looked between the radio and the cop. With a shake of his head, the older man spoke. "All of it, but that box never shuts up." He let out a soft chuckle before continuing. "Got a nephew up at UGA; you teach there long?" "Going on my sixth year." Lee responded with a nod, looking up at the rearview mirror. Without missing a beat, the cop looked in the rearview mirror. "You meet your wife in Athens?" Lee felt his heart all but stop at the mention of his wife, well, ex-wife. He looked back down like if he avoided meeting the older man's gaze then the pain in his chest would go away.

"You wanna know how I see it?"

"I got much choice?"

"Sure don't." The cop said, glancing back up at the rearview mirror to look at Lee, opening his mouth to say something only to see the convict glaring at him with his brows furrowed. Letting out a soft sigh the older man looked back at the road, opting out of whatever he had originally planned on saying to Lee. Allowing a silence to settle in the cruiser before her decided to speak again. "Regardless, could be you just married the wrong woman." Lee opens his mouth to say something at that comment before cutting himself off with a heavy sigh and a dejected look on his face. "Maybe she just married the wrong guy..." He mumbled more to himself then the cop.

"You're gonna have to learn that you shouldn't worry about things that are out of your control." The older man advised, seemingly unbothered as a helicopter passed overhead heading towards Atlanta with the CB crackling to life as a dispatcher requesting all available units for help with a riot and various incoming 217's as multiple SWAT care, police cruisers, and helicopters flew back towards Atlanta. Rolling his eyes the cop reached over and flicked the radio off before leaning back against his seat.

Why was the cop not worried about that?

The cop begins to tell a story about a man he once had sitting right in the backseat where Lee was. Telling Lee about how such a large man could throw a temper tantrum like a kid who got caught with their hand in the cookie jar. "He started kicking the back of my seat, and I told him to stop because I'd have to tase him otherwise. Whole time he's screaming about how it wasn't him and that it was all a big mistake."

"So, did he do it?" Lee asked, looking up at the cop through the glass separating them.

"'Course he did it! Caught the fucker red-handed; stabbin' his wife and cutting her up as the boys came through the door!" He exclaimed, using his hands to accentuate his point further. "Sits in my car blubbering like a baby, crying for his mama while claiming it was mistake. I think he really believed it himself. Goes to show what people will up an' mad when they believe that their life is over." The cop said with a gentle, disappointed shake of his head.

Shaking his head, Lee let out a soft sigh as he looked out the front window.

"Oh, I got another story for ya. This one's a little less depressing and a bit funnier, if I do say so." The cop spoke a fond smile as he thought about it, looking up at the rearview mirror to look at Lee, not taking notice of the person stumbling across the highway divider and walking in front of the cruiser. Letting out a sharp gasp Lee banged against the glass as he yelled "FUCKING DRIVE!" at the cop, who goes to continue the story and was cut off when the cruiser hit the person with a loud BANG. The cruiser was sent into a brief spiral before it flew off the right side of the road and down a decline into the woods.
